Question for all Steer Wrestlers.... Does your coach teach you to ski like nearly all of the coaches I've had? This NFR Highlight does not show one dogger skiing like coaches say. Rope Meyers once told me that for as long as you ski, you might as well lay $100 bills in your tracks.
The lower you are the more stopping power you have. If you use the ski technique, throw it out and try more of a baseball slide technique instead like all the guys in the video. I promise it shaves 1-1.5 seconds off.
Bulldoggin came from the ranch. It was used to catch an animal to treat it. Same thing with roping. A select group of people just got good at it and became competative with it. I agree that these animals are treated better than the average stock. There is such thing as animal abuse- no doubt, and some irresponsible cowboys can get hard on their animals-but any cowboy in his right of mind treats these calves well. You can take That to the bank!

A good set of cattle can last three years.At the finals they dont run the same ones back to back they have three sets of cattle for all timed events.3 sets of steers for buldoggin and 3 for team roping and for the calf roping.All cattle events they have a set for the draw and 5 extras.Those that put the deal on here about abuse dont do the research.You can make any thing look like you want it.If they want to help animals they need to go to Mex and theow a fit and see what happens there.
Bulldoggin cattle are not calves they are from 4 to 6 yrs old they dont come out of Mex untill they are three or so.And they are in such bad shape when they get here some cant get off the truck by them selves.It takes any where from 45 to 90 days on some to get them strong eneough to even startt to throw down/They come here not knowing how to eat feed or drink out of a water troft.Ihave had to pull some off of the truck they were so week and thin from Mex.they doint take care of them there.

The fact that some people dont like it means that they simply have not done research. These calves live longer lives than expected most of the time... Bulldoggin cattle are not calves they are from 4 to 6 yrs old they dont come out of Mex untill they are three or so.And they are in such bad shape when they get here some cant get off the truck by them selves.It takes any where from 45 to 90 days on some to get them strong eneough to even startt to throw down/They come here not knowing how to eat feed or drink out of a water troft.Ihave had to pull some off of the truck they were so week and thin from Mex.they doint take care of them there.

my trainer's husband does this so we have steers at the barn all the time;; none of them have ever gotten hurt and they are all perfectly healthy.

The fact that some people dont like it means that they simply have not done research. These calves live longer lives than expected most of the time... The 10 seconds of work they do a week (which their bodies are built to handle) are folowed by weeks of like wild conditions grazing and eating. There are experts who monitor their health as well. Look it up if you don't believe me! Thats why PETA hasnt been able to get rid of the rodeo. The animals are VERY well cared for

Did you know that animals who are bred for the rodeo actually live longer lives than the typical wild animal? their 8 seconds of work are followed by weeks of almost wildlike grazing. look it up. from the gate opening. Actually its a rope that has a trip rope attached to the steers head, once the steer gets out the gate a few feet the rope breaks off his neck and allows the rope in front of the horse to sling back and out of the way. You incure a 10 second penalty if you break the rope before it slings back. Time starts as soon as the steer leaves his gate.
