Finally! I don't remember the first three scenes, but I've always wondered about the Sherlock scene. I remember it as a child and always wondered why it wasn't in my copy that I used to have. It's odd about the copy-write theory because no name is mentioned. What is the infringement? The pipe? The dear slayer hat? Two English gentlemen traveling together? I'll have to go back and watch it again but I don't recall anything that I would think is "proprietary". Interesting.
It's really strange, but when I used to see this film when it aired on TV in the eighties, I swear they showed these scenes WITH the film. In fact, I recorded it off network television and these scenes WERE included. But when I bought the VHS, they were not there.
@hurricanejbb And all the five detectives and their accomplices did was disable ALL traps and act as a headliner for the REAL mystery-solving hero to claim the victory. As for Twain's connection with Holmes, There IS none, Holmes is just famous in his own right, famous enough to be invited to dinner and a murder.
This scene was cut because the actors playing the parody versions of Holmes and Watson were so good that the Doyle estate thought they were, well, too good to just be parody, and had the scene pulled.
while I'm not surprised that due to the weather and the much older car used by "Mr. Holmes" (would have been a different name, no?) that they were delayed. I also love Wongs whole "oh, let him figure it out for himself"... it *does* make me wonder, tho, what "Holmes" would find (/find out) when he finally reaches... the hysterically laughing Rita?
I hope this scene was not deleted because of the racism going on at the time. I know Richard Narita was the only actor who was missing from the beginning diorama credits in the treasure chest sequence.
You're right. I watched the movie and he's NOT there. I like the other actors, especially James Cromwell, but they shouldn't have treated someone like that.
Not to mention that (definitely) James Cromwell wasn't as well known as this was his film debut...I'm not sure about Richard Narita. As far as credits go...every other actor was well-established...they may not have been.
Oh, please. Watch again. Both James Cromwell and Richard Narita in supporting roles have the "with" billing during the opening sequence. Not too shabby. "Racism" has nothing to do with anything here. Give me a break. Some people like to cry racism, even when it isn't appropriate. Look at who the other actors were... most very big stars. Alec Guinness, Maggie Smith, Peter Falk, Truman Capote, Peter Sellers, etc. Of course they (who also play the main characters) will get top billing.
@Oppledeldoc According to the "Universal Sherlock Holmes" web site they are two little-known actors: Keith McConnell (Holmes) and Richard Peel (Watson).
I loved this movie as a kid and saw it 4x in the theater in 1976, and had the book. I even audio taped the whole movie when it was on TV on ABC. If I remember correctly, this scene wasn't in the original theatrical release but was included on the telecast. Maybe that is why it isn't on the DVD, the TV aired a different version.
Ah - should have looked a bit further at the posts - thanks. Those are the only deleted scenes I remember. But I swear I saw these scenes on a VHS rental in the early 80s.
wow i loved this movie as a kid, we had it taped off the tv, but i dont remember any of these scenes tho, it mustve been cut for time saving. im kinda glad the final cut scene wasnt kept in for the dvd tho cause i think the endings better without it
I've been looking for these clips too! They're awesome. Why the heck aren't these on the dvd, at least in the special features? I remember seeing the entire version on tv as a kid, then realized scenes were cut for the disc! That makes no sense! Anyway, thanks a ton for posting.
Sometimes, TV stations will cut content for broadcast (for time/content issues), while sometimes they will also add deleted scenes back into the movie (for time).
I read that this specific scene wasn't included on the DVD due to copyright issues with the Sherlock Holmes franchise, but who knows how true that is. :)
Do you know of any other scenes that I don't have, and that are also not on the DVD?
No other scenes that I'm aware of. In fact, I only remembered two of the scenes: Willie finding the clue and Sherlock Holmes. The other two were new to me -- so thanks a ton.
If I remember correctly, I read somewhere that the reason for the Holmes and Watson scene being cut was because there was some kind of problem with the rights from the Doyle estate. But I read that on IMDB maybe?
I'll have to check it out. Still nice to see this and the other missing scenes again! Thanks!

The next day, all five detectives are left bawling when they learn that Holmes cracked the case.

Actually, the director and producer couldn't decide if Sherlock Holmes was in the public domain or not, so they dropped the scene themselves.

@theorganguy It not Rita, but Yeta, the Cook!

Actually, Richard Narita and James Cromwell are both given the "with" billing... you are mistaken. Narita wasn't treated badly at all.

The scene was deleted because of a dispute over the rights to the Holmes and Watson characters.
