cute video, does not show even the basic's of how the ebb and grow operates. All you did was talk about your substrate system. What about the pumps, what about the fittings, what about the float valves, what about the tubing needed, what about the lid setup. None of this is addressed.
Has anyone had issues with the inserts sinking when the plant grows up and potentially compacting the root mass? Being that the STG doesnt have a lot of structural integrity as opposed to rockwool? I hear that people have been putting little hooks into the STG and hooking over the edge of the bucket to prevent it from sinking when the plant grows up??? ANYONE?
I really liked the STG, the plants are going better then they were in pebbles (hydroton). But should the plants receive water -flud & drain- during the dark period, 12/12, at least once.. or more? Please reply, thanks.
I've been using the system for one week and I have 1 major problem affecting the plants. The water in the 55 gallon reservoir has a pH of 5.8. During the flood cycle the water in the controller module has again pH 5.8. During the drain cycle when the water from the buckets return to the controller module, to go back in the 55 gallon reservoir, the pH is 6.2 to 6.3. I can adjust the pH in the reservoir without a problem, but then the PPM will rise when you add more pH up or down. What can I do?
@oknbjiuhvcgy thanks for the email. what may be happening is that the inserts have compressed a bit and are not draining properly and you are getting nutrient build up which is flushing back into your res and causing the pH fluctuation. Please call our office and we will walk you through how to correct this and get you on track.
@ohmysoles What is with all the negativity?? If you dont trust the free advice, don't take it. Just move on man. No one likes a hater. Never understand you guys.
@TheGanglandman We get a ton of emails from down under all the time. you guys are great. the problem is your distributors and retailers SUCK. We have tried to work with several and have sent lots of samples, not one has taken the ball and run with it. Get some bucks together and open it up, I'm with you. I will send you 100 leads.
@BetterDoYourHomeWork Yes, but I would recommend if you do this, either top the insert with poly, or some other sort of cover. Using rockwool together with STG will allow the rockwool to wick up moisture to the top of the insert.... causing algae growth. This will not occur if you start in STG.
i had 4inch rockwool and the deluge inserts didnt like the hack job i had to do to make the4 inch rockwool fit! better have 2inch cloning media or use STG cloning pucks,if not, good luck! I will try Hail next time. My plants didnt take to the foam and the water compressed the insert wayyyy to much! Only leads to Algae problems with the surface of insert getting wet....some have had great luck with this product! start from seed and a 2inch clone media and it probably will work.
The success with the deluge insert varies greatly with every grower. I suggest if you're having problems with the insert, make the switch to hail, it will most likely alleviate all complaints and allow your plants to thrive again.
every grower i know that has used stg says it sucks. why would i give it a try? i only try products with good feedback from other growers. somethings work better than others and they stay in my rotation, stg isnt even on my radar... im glad it works great for u but then again I DONT GROW PEPPERS! i do take back what i said about the small bucket size, turns out they are big enough to support monster treez.
We are happy to receive constructive feedback, but "stg sucks" doesn't capture the struggles your friends seem to be having. Could you be more specific? We grow a variety of other plant species other than peppers which tend to grow heavy fruit, for example tomatoes. As I stated before we love to hear constructive feedback, so that we can help resolve issues and ultimately enhance your growing experience.
My friend used stg and said it always stayed too wet, i think i'll stick to my red balls. the ebb n grow is golden though. the only negative is the 3 gallon buckets, 5gal buckets would allow u to veg longer and get bigger plants.
The statement STG stays too wet is truly a perception. I think you should give it a shot to see what you think. I've successfully grown with STG in an Ebb flooding anywhere from 2-12 times a day. Can't be too wet if the plants look so healthy, and continue to drink. Especially with the new "hail" cubes... We've yet to see any signs of over watering. If the Ebb is your "golden" choice, I recommend giving STG hail a shot.
I have 2 ebb and grows. The 1st one I bought, made in the US and NO problems... The new one I bought has a CHINA made timer..... I have had to return 4 timers/controllers now!!! If anybody out there want to buy, make SURE your supplier will replace the controller THEMSELVES. Otherwise, they want to SEND IT BACK to C.A.P. and they will fix it and send it back 2-3 WEEKS later.. Never mind you are growing at the time.
how can u say that red dust harms the plants, i or you have never heard of someones crop failing due to red dust,, if the red dust was that bad it wouldnt even be in the bag ,,,, u wash of what u can so ur pump doesnt get clogged up ,not because it effects ur plants
Matt- outstanding video man. Really. Thanks for all this info. I want to get away from Hydroton... it's a pain in the ass. In this video, are those STG storm series ? Are they the "inserts" ? Any advantage/diadvantage over the loose fill material ? I was told the "Storm Deluge" was specifically made for thise CAP ebb and grow system ? Maybe you could clear some of this up for me. Would be hugely appreciated man.
you really gotta rinse those pebbles well before use. even then, you'll still get some red dust.. its harmless though and does clear up in a few weeks... also, you can reuse the pebbles next grow and they will be much cleaner!
i dont think an insert would offer the same drainage or engorage the roots down into the res below as its more of a solid structure? have a go.but i'll stick with clay until someone else tries first lol
spurkismo, i appreciate the comments and i agree you can grow beautiful plants in hydroton but to say that "red dust" is harmless is patently incorrect. The reason it is red is due to Fe2o3. Rust. If you use a mag drive pump where do you think this sediment migrates to. Not to mention it provide a wonderful breeding ground for pathogens. And there are rumors now that some expanded clay sourcing out of china has trace arsenic levels.
i dont like the 24 hour cycle i feel the need to rest as for as the 7 week for veg use you own descresion think plants double in size when flowerd 18in is good size
How do you feel about the whole 24 hr days and 3 week cycle. Im under the impression that going 7 weeks for veg, is wasteful..And that 3 weeks is the MOST effective.

Could you please explain to me exactly how nutrients go stale?
In my experience if you oxygenate, and keep everything dissolved, you can go weeks without a res change assuming your keeping up with PPM and Ph.

@sleazypolar We do not disagree with your with your view. I think we were addressing a different issue.

If they stayed too wet, your friend was flooding too frequently. That is a user error and not a problem with the product.
