Regarding the accidental double-clicked lasso tool: if you are using a Wacom, you can set the application preferences for PSD so that you actually can't ever double click. This way you can lay down that lasso as fast as you want without ever accidentally closing the mask. This tip can alleviate a ton of frustration.
