Go to most airports nowadays...the mask is necessary for him, serves a lot for him, mystery, a bit of privacy. Michael didnt have Lupus (the new autopsy reports proved that)...He did need protection from the sun but Michael said he wore the mask to give people the old razzle dazzle according to Randy Taraborelli...Also we should never ask why Michael does this or that..U know he is different and mysterious so anything he says and does doesnt surprise me..its just him being his mysterious self.

MJ wore a mask to protect himself from the sun. MJ suffered from both vitiligo and lupus both auto-immune diseases People with vitilgio have an extremely increased rick of skin cancer. Lupus can also make you allergic to the sun. That is the reason for the masks and umbrellas. I also believe that is was also a way to keep part of himself private. As you can see he was hounded everywhere he went. I think he was saying well if you won't leave me alone I am only going to let you see what I want.
