A tremendous, vastly underrated Stones tune. . .exemplified the 'lock up your daughters' persona the band cultivated so shrewdly in the later '60s. . .
Please no comparisons of Wood and Taylor. Taylor is/was light years beyond him at playing lead guitar on these songs. Watch the much hyped Japan tour of the Stones from 2007(?). Wood merely wanders around and does the rock star kick, etc. He looks the part but there is little to no lead guitar happening. Taylor made these songs sizzle. Once you've heard the great Stones songs with Taylor, they are hollow without him.
@jbstonesfan HAhaha. If you were there you'd know that by 69, the Beatlles had already blossomed psychedelic and were riffing on everything imaginable including blues, gospel, folk, and Gilbert and Sullivan. Sgt.Peppers and the White Album were like pure Blue Cheer compared to the Stones Jack Daniels. Popped? YOU obviously weren't there.
@fckyoumotherfscker ACTUALLY IT'S THIRTEEN OR FIFTEEN DEPENDING ON WHICH RECORDING OF THE SONG YOU LISTEN TO. WHAT'S THE MATTER WITH YOUR CAPS LOCK? AND WHY ARE YOU SO CONCERNED WITH THE HYPOTHETICAL SEX POTENTIALLY BEING HAD BY YOUNG GIRLS?
95% of teens these days listen to the same crappy pop over and over again. If you're one of the 5% who still listens to real music, thumb this up, then copy & paste it to at least five videos. Don't let the spirit of rock and roll die
First time I heard 'em was this Tour. Was onlyI 9 so Mom copped Vinyl Boot on "Lurch' Records. Friends all dug The Osmonds, etc - but I felt Life-changing SOUL here.. Ended up playin Mick for a Living.
Think it's from the boot LiveR Than You'll Ever Be - "On November 9, 1969 they played two shows at the Oakland Coliseum, the second of which would be recorded by an audience member for posterity."
You must be kidding...MICK TAYLOR is STILL a STONE...he was with the Bluesbreakers and was ASKED to join the STONES, he didnt audition...and HE LEFT THEM because the drugs and wear and tear was just getting to everyone in the group and him as well...Ron Wood was in group that was amazing but was increasingly becoming a backup band for Rod Stewart...he was a sentimental pick, looking quite like Keef, but his sloppy bar room style fit the rakish folky Faces, not the Stones...
Bar Chords really helped me figure out this song quickly. I use the Circle of 5ths a whole lot when I'm playing Rolling Stones songs because the F chord goes 1 back on the circle when the rest of song is 5-4-1-2 in the Key of G. Great song :)
As You Can Tell, Mick Taylors Playing The FILLS, Keiths On Rythmn........I Love This Set Up, During The Mick Taylor Years, The Stones Did Theyre Best Work,,,,,,,,,, I Give Ronnie Wood Credit, But Hes Never FIT. Sorry........
@phillfoote you my friend are a fool ,taylor was the best guitar player the stones ever had,and he was headhunted .the stones went after him ..having said that ,i love ronnie as well
@dmellow45 reality check. wood is asked to play whatever taylor laid down in the studio. he does that. as for taylor playing wood...impossible. there you are, the proof is in the putting.
um first off the phrase goes, "the proof is in the pudding" and secondly Mick Taylor could smoke ron wood in every aspect of guitar playing, its obvious man hes lead guitar work is such a joke compared to Taylor.
@Rasputin688 You wanto to learn how to play like Wood - break a couple of fingers on your fretting hand and you'll have it down in no time. Taylor couldn't play Wood -- probably not, he'd be laughing too hard. Wood may have been asked to play what Taylor originally laid down, but the next time he does will be the first time.
@mecormany nah woodys ok, i used to rag on him quite a lot & say he was shit & totally rate Mick Taylor but I heard the barbarians stuff & liked his debut record & 1 or 2 others & learned to appreciate him but he's a different sort of player
nope. final release of Gimme Shelter cut most notably JJF, which opened the show - was in the original film along with footage of MT but now missing. why? this JJF is the most unusual version ever due to great mt slide. stray cat was in the oakland show on the 69 tour and basis for "liver than you'[ll ever be". stones cut a commercial release - ya yas tho touched up here and there in the studio it still contains imho best live versions of their most compelling work - stray cat being prime
to mullerk2: brian jones imput was minimal if any at times they were able to really get going without him slowing them down(yea yea we all know it was his band blah blah but he wanted to do stupid shit with other groups and he didnt write anything. at times he was useful i.e.aftermath, between the buttons otherwise they kicked him out then he died afterwords, what does that tell you?
bad night or amps were blown or they were just in the process of making this song from whats on beggars banquit to what the version is on get yer ya yas which is the best recorded version of this song the others are too sloppy or too fast get yer ya yas is just right when it comes to this track
The Stones never sounded as good as when they had Taylor;he was a great solo guitarist whose ability and creativity can be compared to that of hendrix; after his departure, even thou, they continued to make a lot of great music, never sounded the same
@malafe12345 with due respect to mick taylor bu jimi he wasn't. taylor was great on lead but i daresay there were and are comparables. slightly worse with timing and stuff, which is crucial to a band. ron has a great beat, as keef does, and that's why he's a stone.
@matty6345 Must be why Hendrix sought him out when he was with the Bluesbreakers to meet him and wanted to jam with him at MSG. What 'and stuff'? Taylor's timing, phrasing, tone and taste is exquisite, especially here considering he was all of 21. The Stones have never been the same since he left. Ron is a Stone so Keith doesn't have to look like an amateur night after night like he did playing with Taylor. Only great beat Wood has is when he's drunk and ticked at his wife.
uh......you might be talking about Bowie and Jagger, not Keith Richards. It's a rumour started by either Bowie's ex wife or Jagger's ex wife, can't remember which one.
Just about my favorite stones song. Very rarely recorded live, and best version seems to be on YaYa's Out. Taylor solo soars and Keith finally makes some sense as his counter part. Thanks for this.
Great version of this tune...This era was by far the best musically for them. Mick Taylor was the best thing to happen to the Stones, he gave Keith a real kick in the ass in a good way. Keith's solos improved so much more during this time. BTW, this pic here is from the mid 70s, around 74 or 75 tour. You can see Ollie Brown's fro in the background! Cool Stuff nonetheless...
I know exactly what you mean by the "sound" of that era. Hard to explain, but I know it when I hear it. Few bands can reproduce it, not even the Stones themselves.
I love that he changes it to 13 years old live. lol, even sicker mick.
