Hmmm looks like Japan may be perfect for me, well at 5ft 5 I'm the right size for the doors, I wonder if I'll be able to buy clothes that fit without having to resort to children's sizes!!!
Hey mister Is japan good to live and what are the most high money jobs there is in Japan? Like the jobs that give you more money? Please respond back - Jackie (Japanese lover) :3
My grandmother is Japanese and fairly tall and when I was little I always asked her why traditional homes have such small doorways she told me that it's not that Japanese are short alot of it has to do with forcing someone to bow before entering a room...I don't know how true that is but interesting things I learn from my grandmother LOL I know in some houses there is a really small door you have to craw through..quite weird LOL and I believe she said is was a guest door..haha makes you bow low!
@FreshLemunz On my first trip to Japan I was often traveling with two friend, one is 6'9" the other 6'3" and they constantly had to duck everywhere! In contrast to them I didn't consider myself being tall at all (being 5'11" myself) and hit my head several times in older buildings as a result. So be carefull ;-)
I went to Japan for two weeks last February, and I scraped the top of my head on several door frames, which surprised me because I'm only 5'11". (About 180 cm) No big deal though, they're a slightly shorter people and if it works for them, who am I to complain?
The door frames are lower in Japan because the design of the house has to be designed with light earthquakes in mind. Having more top wall to work with allows for more wooden beams to be connected from wall to wall, allowing the house to withstand a small earthquake around 5 on the richter scale. So it's not because Japanese people are smaller, it's because of the fact that earthquake are common in Japan and Japanese houses are designed with this in mind.
175cm is really low. In my country the standard is 210cm but on the average we are just 160-170cm tall. Hmmmm~~ I wonder why is it that low? Maybe Japanese used to be smaller back then and traditional screen makers pegged the height @175cm? Or maybe the local wood used as door/screen frames in Japan can only be cut @175cm high max?
And watch your toes too, man! A lot of Japanese houses have floor sashes for their doorways. Catching one with just your socks on can be really painful. Itai~!
I bet it SUCKS to walk around at night, when you're half awake to get a glass of water! xD Cause you forget about all those things when you're sleepy. Then you're walking and out of nowhere WHAM!! You're awake, haha!
Thank goodness I'm only 5'2"! I walk around at night all the time, half asleep. :P
Hahahah, this has never happen to me. Being shorter can help. It does appear to be an older how. It looks at least 15 years old. Well, take care and don't bust your coconut open.
construction regulations for new buildings in holland mean that doors have to have a hight of 220 centimeters. it used to be 200 centimeters not too long ago.
Just a theory, but might this have something to do with bowing in Japan? Historically, Japanese people bowing / lowering themselves when walking into a room would be common... I suppose having low doors, they're somewhat forced to?
I don't know, what do you think? Why exactly are they made so low? I thought Japanese people all being particularly short would've just been another myth.
I have been living in my grandparents house on the edge of Nara for a couple of weeks now. Unfortunately for me, it's a very large, but traditional country house and I've hit my head on almost every doorway in the house, and several low hanging lights. I'm also 6'7''. Needless to say, Japanese architecture doesn't agree with me.
Oh man...I'm 6'5''... I'd end up with 2-3 mild concussions the first week (seeing as I don't mind my head sometimes). Didn't really know that about the houses, the hotel I stayed in there back in '99 had normal doorways...Luckily.
And thanks for the fantastic video. I certainly learn much more from this channel than from the most popular television channel in my country which is mainly focused on American "entertainment".
When I was a small child, I wondered why the doorway into my grandfather's house was so low that my father (who's about 190 cm tall) had to bend himself to be able to walk through it. I've grown up quite a bit since then and I have to bend there too. The weird thing about it is, only the doorway that leads into the building is like that, the doorways inside the house are all taller and you don't have to bend yourself for them at all.
This is a question from my cousin " Is there any collages in Japan that has classes in English if so what chance would she have going to a collage over there after graduating high school. .
@JGShorts 2 meters? OMG X3 If 6 ft tall is already above the average, not to mention even MORE for the japanese people, than your height must be gigantic for them :O Did you get any weird looks? I mean, even in the western world you'ld stand out xD
oh dear ... Im 1,79 m ... with houseshoes or something Im sure I'd always crush my head against the doorways ... 1,80 m might just be enough to catch me unexpected ... THX4 the video
6'0 doorways...my dad's old garage has one and I've hit my head on it more times than I remember. Being 6'4 it's hard to miss sometimes. You must be around 6'4 or so?
Your house is really coming together quite nicley! I love the green color with the dark wood, just lovely! thanks for all your videos! I can't wait to see the before/after!
I used to be 5' 11.5" in 2007, so back then I might have had issues. Now I am 5' 10" - Which is great for me wanting to visit/live in Japan! I hope I don't shrink anymore!
I love the farmhouse (and) renovating videos. I hope they're not too much trouble to make and we will see more of the renovating and cleaning process. :)
I bet the house will look absolutely lovely once you're done with it.
LOL! Now you know why Godzilla destroyed Tokyo. He got ticked off hitting his head on all of those doorways! (Mooorrrr - thump, 'ow!' - videoooossss, coming soon.)
Totally made me laugh - thanks for the "heads up" (or heads down?) My husband is 6'4, and I hope he will be with me on my next trip to Japan. I'll be sharing this with him.
Wow there's so many tall people in the comments lol! I'm a 5'11" girl so I guess I'll probably hit my head haha... Japan will make us all feel like giants.
The average height of a bedroom in an American house is ~9 feet (2.74 meters). Mine is about my height. Without shoes, there's only but 2.5cm of clearance between my head and the ceiling. The walls decline in some areas. The ceiling light meets me in the face like the door frames meet you in the face. After a month I subconsciously tilt my head when I'm walking near it and if I unavoidably hit my head I don't feel anything. Weird, eh?
Have you been in a submarine? The doors are suuuuper tiny. D:
I'm 6'7" so i know i am going to have problems with doorways, but im thinking it might be quite uncomfortable to live in a house if the ceilings are only a couple of inches above my head
Hmmm looks like Japan may be perfect for me, well at 5ft 5 I'm the right size for the doors, I wonder if I'll be able to buy clothes that fit without having to resort to children's sizes!!!

What about ceiling fans? How common are those and do they pose a threat to someone like yourself?

The average height of a bedroom in an American house is ~9 feet (2.74 meters). Mine is about my height. Without shoes, there's only but 2.5cm of clearance between my head and the ceiling. The walls decline in some areas. The ceiling light meets me in the face like the door frames meet you in the face. After a month I subconsciously tilt my head when I'm walking near it and if I unavoidably hit my head I don't feel anything. Weird, eh?
Have you been in a submarine? The doors are suuuuper tiny. D:

How high are the ceilings in the rooms?
I'm 6'7" so i know i am going to have problems with doorways, but im thinking it might be quite uncomfortable to live in a house if the ceilings are only a couple of inches above my head
