  • Hmmm looks like Japan may be perfect for me, well at 5ft 5 I'm the right size for the doors, I wonder if I'll be able to buy clothes that fit without having to resort to children's sizes!!!

  • be careful that when you piggyback a child at your house.

    (゚д゚;)

  • dammit, i'm 188cm :)

  • I would laugh except that this is actually kinda depressing >_>;; Are you guys gonna raise the doorways?

  • Hey mister Is japan good to live and what are the most high money jobs there is in Japan? Like the jobs that give you more money? Please respond back - Jackie (Japanese lover) :3

  • I'm 6' 3 so if I moved there I think I'd have to raise the height of the door frames.

  • Hey guys lol

  • you should be a pilot. Why?

    because it would be awsome

-Heeey guys there will be some turbulance.....

  • how do you get to japan ???

  • @MarukoMC1 teleportation

  • @MarukoMC1 Magic

  • Nice informative videos on Japan. Keep the good work going !

  • Japaneses old houses ... official sponsor of Aspirin® !

  • bow down lol

  • My grandmother is Japanese and fairly tall and when I was little I always asked her why traditional homes have such small doorways she told me that it's not that Japanese are short alot of it has to do with forcing someone to bow before entering a room...I don't know how true that is but interesting things I learn from my grandmother LOL I know in some houses there is a really small door you have to craw through..quite weird LOL and I believe she said is was a guest door..haha makes you bow low!

  • So if I'm 5'11" would I have a problem? Because I'm guessing that ducking all the time must get annoying!

  • @FreshLemunz On my first trip to Japan I was often traveling with two friend, one is 6'9" the other 6'3" and they constantly had to duck everywhere! In contrast to them I didn't consider myself being tall at all (being 5'11" myself) and hit my head several times in older buildings as a result. So be carefull ;-)

  • @FreshLemunz Yes, you will have a problem. I am the same height. Hit my head all the time.

  • Watch your ATAMA

  • I'm guessing I'm about the same height as you (6'4") so thank you for the warning lol

  • "Expect to get smacked in the face" hahaha

  • This is one of the very few times I have to say I'm glad I'm short. I'm 1,59 cm (5'3") so... I guess there wouldn't be a problem for me. Fantastic!

  • hey man how tall are you?

  • Well it's a good thing the ceilings are high enough for you :)

  • OMG! i love this video so much too ! you`re funny! thank you !

  • I went to Japan for two weeks last February, and I scraped the top of my head on several door frames, which surprised me because I'm only 5'11". (About 180 cm) No big deal though, they're a slightly shorter people and if it works for them, who am I to complain?

Great vids BTW, keep it up!

  • 日本の家は全体的に小さいですよね(´д`)長身の方は住みにくい家が多い。。外国みたく広々とした家に憧れます

  • The door frames are lower in Japan because the design of the house has to be designed with light earthquakes in mind. Having more top wall to work with allows for more wooden beams to be connected from wall to wall, allowing the house to withstand a small earthquake around 5 on the richter scale. So it's not because Japanese people are smaller, it's because of the fact that earthquake are common in Japan and Japanese houses are designed with this in mind.

  • What if you 5'11?

  • How long have you been living in Japan?

  • lol imagine a 7 foot basketball player in that doorway... theyd have to crawl under it

  • time to invest on a decent hard hat hehe

  • lol like Gandalf in Bilbos house.

  • 175cm is really low. In my country the standard is 210cm but on the average we are just 160-170cm tall. Hmmmm~~ I wonder why is it that low? Maybe Japanese used to be smaller back then and traditional screen makers pegged the height @175cm? Or maybe the local wood used as door/screen frames in Japan can only be cut @175cm high max?

  • its like living in barbie house

  • Ever seen Lord of the rings when Gandalf is in bagend?

  • I didn't think you were that tall :O!

  • @calculatorINSTINCTS whatd you think, he was like 5' 5''? XD

  • @edwardbellafan12321 like 5'9 or something, not over six foot! hahah

  • I'm sure that going to the bathroom in the middle of the night requires a helmet.

  • @AaronDArnold or you get used to crawl on the floor ;D

  • lol I'm short

  • What's the maximum height for the door frames in Japan? Just to be sure if I will be banging my head, or not haha.

  • And watch your toes too, man! A lot of Japanese houses have floor sashes for their doorways. Catching one with just your socks on can be really painful. Itai~!

  • OMG YOU´RE TOO TALL.....CONGRATULATIONS..... I THINK..... :D

  • I bet it SUCKS to walk around at night, when you're half awake to get a glass of water! xD Cause you forget about all those things when you're sleepy. Then you're walking and out of nowhere WHAM!! You're awake, haha!

Thank goodness I'm only 5'2"! I walk around at night all the time, half asleep. :P

  • Don't want to be rude... but its because most japanese people are small.

  • Have you done a video about interiors in japan? If not, could you please?

  • Just put this up awhile ago? Wow! Big place my friend.

    Gotta watch my head too!

  • Hahahah, this has never happen to me. Being shorter can help. It does appear to be an older how. It looks at least 15 years old. Well, take care and don't bust your coconut open.

  • haha XD i am really tall to i bet it looks cool when your around your Japanese friends and you have to duck to get into building and doorways

  • construction regulations for new buildings in holland mean that doors have to have a hight of 220 centimeters. it used to be 200 centimeters not too long ago.

  • Better wear a helmet in the house.

  • huh, I'm 182! 2 cm to much!

  • Hit my head walking down stairs at Nijo castle, made the loudest noise XD

    sooo embarassing :P

  • not really an issue in the cities, can't remember ever having to duck under any doorways. but like he says it'll only really be in older buildings.

  • Just a theory, but might this have something to do with bowing in Japan? Historically, Japanese people bowing / lowering themselves when walking into a room would be common... I suppose having low doors, they're somewhat forced to?

I don't know, what do you think? Why exactly are they made so low? I thought Japanese people all being particularly short would've just been another myth.

  • Well it is nice to know I will not have that problem in Japan since I am short at only 167cm

  • You obviously have attended the school of hard knocks!

  • I have been living in my grandparents house on the edge of Nara for a couple of weeks now. Unfortunately for me, it's a very large, but traditional country house and I've hit my head on almost every doorway in the house, and several low hanging lights. I'm also 6'7''. Needless to say, Japanese architecture doesn't agree with me.

  • Oh man...I'm 6'5''... I'd end up with 2-3 mild concussions the first week (seeing as I don't mind my head sometimes). Didn't really know that about the houses, the hotel I stayed in there back in '99 had normal doorways...Luckily.

  • lol I'm a pretty tall girl and I do tend to often forget to duck in places I'm supposet to duck. Good word of advice. :) Nice video.

  • I cnat wait to move to japan (: Your videos have taught me alot

  • Excuse me for laughing, but this video was hilarious LOL.

  • Yay! A place for short people! I'm just off being 5ft3 so it would be perfect for me! =D

  • And thanks for the fantastic video. I certainly learn much more from this channel than from the most popular television channel in my country which is mainly focused on American "entertainment".

  • When I was a small child, I wondered why the doorway into my grandfather's house was so low that my father (who's about 190 cm tall) had to bend himself to be able to walk through it. I've grown up quite a bit since then and I have to bend there too. The weird thing about it is, only the doorway that leads into the building is like that, the doorways inside the house are all taller and you don't have to bend yourself for them at all.

  • Ack! I'm 173cm -A-

  • I really want to go to Japan. When I'm older I will for sure. I love your videos, they are so helpful/awesome :)

  • i recently went to japan, and i lost count of the times I've hit my head on doorways!

  • The place looks great you have done some good work! Plus you look really happy in this vid its good to see!!!!

  • I would feel like a giant at 5' 9" as a woman!

  • Lol... you look like Gandalf in a Hobbit hole.

I lived in a 13th century thatched cottage in England, and all the doors were even lower and had foam around them.

  • I am trying to imagine that in the night youre running to a toilet with really urgent matter... ;)

Or after you come to Australia you will still duck in normal doorway just because you used to ;)

  • That's like Gandalf the Grey hit his head in Bilbo's house ( True fact - Ian Mckeller did it by accident and not scripted "

  • わたしは日本人だが、古い民家だとしばしば鴨居に頭をぶつける。

鴨居(かもい called "Kamoi" ) means the place in which a duck is present, so you shold act a duck, when move japanese rooms.

    このレポートもおもしろかった。

  • Thank you as always for your videos. I'm flying to Tokyo in 4 days so I'm reviewing all of your videos!

  • 1.80 cms is 5'11

    1.83 cms is 6'0

  • im 5'5 lol

  • Hey gu...>insert smack<.......ys. <----what I was expecting lmao.

  • Thank goodness I'm only 4'6" lol

  • A true contestant for the how (not) to-playlist...

  • "Careful..."

    Good advice. Too late.

  • hahaah i'm only 1.60 so i should move to Japan xD

  • : / How high is the roof? would you be rubbing your head along the roof if you're 6'7?

  • This made me laugh pretty good. Nice video.

  • This is a question from my cousin " Is there any collages in Japan that has classes in English if so what chance would she have going to a collage over there after graduating high school. .

  • i am perfect height for it lol

  • Good thing I'm only 5'3''. XD

  • i'm 5'10'' was just in japan for 2 weeks, in different friends homes and all over the country.

I never thought about it and never hit my head. :P

  • WOOT I'm 176cm :)

  • youre like GANDALF in Bilbo's house. LOL

  • Good thing my grandpa never lived in Japan. He was 6'5" and 350lbs.

  • My first night at my in-law's house in Kobe, I nearly knocked myself unconscious on a low beam like that.

  • Man. I bet Godzilla is only 6' tall! And all this time I thought he was giant!

  • Yup, I'm 2 meters tall and it wasn't odd for me to whack my head at least 6 times a day while I was in Japan last month.. Damned Genkan

  • @JGShorts 2 meters? OMG X3 If 6 ft tall is already above the average, not to mention even MORE for the japanese people, than your height must be gigantic for them :O Did you get any weird looks? I mean, even in the western world you'ld stand out xD

  • You know what I hate? When there's a spider in like the corner of a doorway. That must be terrible for you D:

  • i have the same situation in my grandparents' house.

  • oh dear ... Im 1,79 m ... with houseshoes or something Im sure I'd always crush my head against the doorways ... 1,80 m might just be enough to catch me unexpected ... THX4 the video

  • Atleast you can see it coming.. since it's on eye height ;)

  • 6'0 doorways...my dad's old garage has one and I've hit my head on it more times than I remember. Being 6'4 it's hard to miss sometimes. You must be around 6'4 or so?

  • im 5-9 so i should be ok lol

  • I would have never thought you were so tall. you never can tell really i suppose. I guess it's because tall dudes are not as common in north wales.

I'm totally fine though. not a thing to worry about since I am 5'9".

  • how often do people mistake you for godzilla?

  • That's a bit inconvenient, but that house looks beautiful. Classic Japanese style.

  • yes! i fit perfectly :D

  • A man, that looks like a pain having to duck everytime i walk around a japanese house, and knowing me i would hit my head everyday! >.<.

  • oh my,i will have a headache in the houses

  • When are you going to sell a shirt that says 'HEYYYYYY GUUUUUUYS.' on it?

  • HA! I just knew there will be a video like this:D.

  • I don't have to be careful! I am only 5ft! ^.^

  • Don't come home drunk

  • smooth moves

  • Your house is really coming together quite nicley! I love the green color with the dark wood, just lovely! thanks for all your videos! I can't wait to see the before/after!

  • lucky for me i'm 147cm!

  • Luckily you own the house, so perhaps you could raise the doorways.

  • 5'3 I guess I wouldn't have a problem with that!

  • @Lucailey - Same here! Short people power!

  • being just over 1.80 would be the start of a real problem (1.82)

    >oh this door seems fine, i can make it without ducking

    bon

  • a dam im 1.90 -.- ah well at least i can get a censor balk before my eyes just like you :D

  • 190cm=6'2 (like i.e. Arnold Schwarzenegger) to be precise.

  • @jbmaru You're 6'3.

  • : Suddenly very glad she's 5'8" :

  • I used to be 5' 11.5" in 2007, so back then I might have had issues. Now I am 5' 10" - Which is great for me wanting to visit/live in Japan! I hope I don't shrink anymore!

  • so Japan is not tall friendly.

  • You will develop a hunch! hehe

  • My father is 6'6"... All my family is over six feet (except me... *sigh*) I think we would have a permanent concussion if we lived there! lol

  • I love the farmhouse (and) renovating videos. I hope they're not too much trouble to make and we will see more of the renovating and cleaning process. :)

I bet the house will look absolutely lovely once you're done with it.

  • im 5"11 so i think im good

  • I'm glad I'm not over 6ft tall ^_^

  • wow just 6 feet.

  • LOL! Now you know why Godzilla destroyed Tokyo. He got ticked off hitting his head on all of those doorways! (Mooorrrr - thump, 'ow!' - videoooossss, coming soon.)

  • I love your house so much.

  • It's ok im short anyways lol.

  • HHHHHHHHHEEEEEEEEyyyyyyyyyyyyyy GGGGGgUUUUUUUyyssssssSS!!!!!!!!!

  • Is there no way to raise those things??? Maybe a head cut out...

  • I'm 5'1 I'd fit into one of those houses like a glove! :D

  • Makes me glad I'm 5' 8" or ~172 cm lol

    Quack! lol

    Thanks for the video!

  • now I'm happy that I'm just under 6ft.

  • That's a good training for bowing...

  • lol, I wouldent have a problem im only 5'6" :p

  • @viatus Same :P

  • You look more happy fixing this house.

  • 気をつけて下さい。

  • Dam I am 6'3" I would have the same problem.

  • ROFLMAO!! You shoulda headed this Vid as:

    Don't get A'HEAD! ~_'~ of YOURSELVES!!! LOLOLOLOL

  • Isn't that annoying?

  • im 6 ft 3 " haha

  • I'm 5'8.5"... Probably a decent height in Japan.

  • lol maybe you can install doggy doors on the parts where you hit your head on.

  • Absolutely fabulous.

  • thank you for being so awesome

  • That proves what I always said: over 5' 8" is for mutants!

  • damn id be barely getting by through those doorways xD

  • Totally made me laugh - thanks for the "heads up" (or heads down?) My husband is 6'4, and I hope he will be with me on my next trip to Japan. I'll be sharing this with him.

  • you sure are tall.. im 179cm

  • Are you going to adjust the doorways in your house so that you fit? Or duck every time?

  • HAHAHA

    height sucks some times

  • Thumbs up if this reminded you of Gandalf at Bilbo Baggin's house!! I wish I could visit Japan sometime :)

  • @BellaArmstrong

haha, you beat me to it, I had a joke to go with it too but so many people wrote the same thing it wouldn't be funny.

  • @BK0125 oooh.. sorry :) but well, we can agree that we both thought on it and it is funny right? xD

  • 6'1" here too XD or 6'2" i got no idea XD

  • 185cm here id be done in japan... (6 feet 5 i think)

  • 6'1" here! LOL

  • I hope you don't wake up to go the toilet in the middle of the night or sleepwalk and knock yourself out. :o

  • Wow there's so many tall people in the comments lol! I'm a 5'11" girl so I guess I'll probably hit my head haha... Japan will make us all feel like giants.

  • What about ceiling fans? How common are those and do they pose a threat to someone like yourself?

  • The average height of a bedroom in an American house is ~9 feet (2.74 meters). Mine is about my height. Without shoes, there's only but 2.5cm of clearance between my head and the ceiling. The walls decline in some areas. The ceiling light meets me in the face like the door frames meet you in the face. After a month I subconsciously tilt my head when I'm walking near it and if I unavoidably hit my head I don't feel anything. Weird, eh?

Have you been in a submarine? The doors are suuuuper tiny. D:

  • How high are the ceilings in the rooms?

I'm 6'7" so i know i am going to have problems with doorways, but im thinking it might be quite uncomfortable to live in a house if the ceilings are only a couple of inches above my head

  • whoa, that means you're pretty tall
