I'm 15 years old, and five years ago I was sitting in a mall with my friends, this song came on only god knows why, and I loved it. It doesn't matter that it's about a dog, because its really about a woman (a mother in the song) who loved her dog (Shannon) very much, and misses her terribly. The daddy is gone, from what I can infer and is not there to help the mom get over it. For those of you bagging on this sad, beautiful song, just remember that if your loved animal died, you'd be sad too.
@AndBrokenValtiel Nice interpretation, and I like how you actually analyzed the lyrics. But in reality this song was written because his friend, Carl Wilson's (Band member of the beach boys) Irish setter died. So it's based on a true story.
But what makes this song particularly hard to listen to is the knowledge that Carl's brother, Bryan, was going through a well-published depression and complete mental break down and still, the dog was the only thing that mattered to them at that moment.
I personally love this song! Any Beach Boyish harmony vocals are awesome! There is a hilarious out take rant by Casey Kasem when he gets yet another dedication to play this song! Check it out!
This song took on a whole new meaning today. I had to lay my 17 year old wennie dog to rest. Going to bed and looking at that spot beside the bed where she and I made that last eye contact of each day is going to be hard. Charley Dog I miss you!
@hotstuffandicecream really sad I am sry.we put som much love in our pets because they at the end of the day make it all worth it ...I am in a situation that I have to leave my dogs because I can no longer endure the physical and mental abuse I wish with all my heart and soul I could take them but its not possible his is so heart breaking
@hotstuffandicecream I'm so sorry. I cried everyday for months after I lost my St. Bernard, Simone. It will be hard for a long time, I'm sad to say. People will tell you to remember the good times you had with her. Only time will heal the loss, but you will make it. When our dogs play such a big part of our life, their loss is felt all the more. The words of this song let you know you are not alone in this situation.
@khmoney2021 that was a very warm sentiment you floated our way. I think I speak for everyone in this comments section when I say thank-you for sharing a whiff of your good tidings, and fond "reaching out".
@hopemccoy Thankyou my friend for taking the time to say something special about Dusty. I'm sorry to hear about your loss, I know you loved Cheeseburger very much. I'm sure he told all his other dog friends that he was the luckiest dog because he had you and your family to live with. God bless you and yours.
Thankyou for your kind words. I can see that you have a very special relationship with your little dog, and I am glad that she is doing well. God bless you and your little dog.
@TheBertieW You are correct, I do derive happy feelings thinking of Dusty. I know you really loved your dog Storm, and if he could have spoken the language I am sure he would have told you thankyou for a great life I loved living with you. Storm is definitely waiting for you with tounge lapping, tail wagging, and eyes full of live. God bless your family. P.S. Dusty was also 12 years old.
my husband passed away 49 we had this funny thing between us i would tell him to try to hit that high note he did it against his will for me he was so cute god bless him forever thats my memory of this song love you big daddy bass...............
When I listen to this song now I think of my wonderful dog ,his name was Dusty. Dusty died a year ago and I miss him more than I could have ever imagined. Cant't even see the keys as I type this for the tears are flowing. If I made any typing errors I know you will understand. I know I will see my old friend in heaven someday. I saw Henry Gross live in concert in 1977, Montgomery, AL at the Civic Center- he was the opening act for the Doobie Brothers during their "Livin' On the Fault Line" tour. I was afraid his performance would be sappy stuff like this (brilliant though it is), but he put on a rockin' show! I miss honest, pure artists like him- this was a great, great song that put a tear in your eye.
Admit it.... How many of us as teenagers tried to hit those high notes? Usually ended up with your friends either joining in or laughing at your rendition:)
I like the fact that Henry Gross was a founding member of Sha Na Na and their lead guitarist. He performed with them at Woodstock. He was quite a versatile artist.
@cep32101 Nice Bro.! It was on the beach in Rocky Point NY 4th of July for me, with all good friends,an ounce of REAL pot and some poor girl that got burned by a roman candle.Shit did she cry :(.I want those days back.I just dont want to forget them
Reminds me of the summer of 1976...the last one spent at my grandparents' in Hot Springs, Arkansas...there was a skating rink, a movie theater, a taco stand and a simpler way of life - it was the 70's!
@lisalisa817 Better question..songs like this are still in demand..when I grew up there were singer song writers whose songs 30-40 years old are still loved and still in demand...Lady Gagga will never fall into that...she is about shock not quality or possessing a timeless quality.
@1927Norma Actually shes not, she will be very much remembered long after shes gone..... Just like Michael Jackson, The Beatles etc. Dont get me wrong, I LOVE this song but to diss another artist is just childish
@rubbersoul7654321 Amen to that....it hurts a lot to lose a family pet whether it be a dog/cat etc. but we just have to remember all the good years they enjoyed and not so much the end..And it does not really matter so much the story behind the song as we all can give it our own touch.
The Brian Wilson story is false. Go to Henry Gross Com and read about how he and Carl Wilson both had Setters named Shannon and they wrote it as they jammed together.
@USDJ2722 almost right they did both have setters named Shannon but Carl's got killed by a car and I believe (if i read it right) Henry went to the beach with Shannon and his guitar and wrote this song in about 15 mins. He wanted Carl to sing back-up but they could never get together to do it. But yea they used to jam together but they didnt make up this song together
This song reminds me of a girl named Shannon Blair, she was a cheerleader and I was to shy to asked her out. If I could see her again this time I would asked her out and tell here how much she meant to me, Love you Shannon!
The story behind this tribute song: Beach Boy Brian Wilson was bedridden with depression, NOTHING could get him out of his bedroom. Finally, a family friend came by & gave Brian a little Irish Setter puppy that Brian named Shannon. Her charisma & love got Brian out of bed & active again. Brian & Shannon romped on the beaches of Southern California daily for months, until one horrible day when Shannon was carried out to sea and never to be seen again. Brian's heart was broken & he was crushed.
It's a sad song but it's also a showcase for the talent in the band, and shows what happens when all of the band members are at their best. The guitar work is bright and very good, the drumming is first rate, the bass is strong and right on and Henrys tenor vocal work steals the show. Yes?
My dacshund Heidi died 34 years ago when I was 13 (we had her about 8 or 9 years). Every time I see a red short haired dacshund, I get choked up and feels like a fresh wound.
But don't you feel better that they died peacful in your arms of the person who they love and trusted. Instead of some cold clinic all alone? Your pet was safe and comfortable in your loving arms, most likely where they loved it best. I hope you find peace. They are family to us and it is only normal to mourn them as you would another close family member. I never cried harder than when my childhood pet (dog) was put to sleep. I get sad thinking that my dog now is already 9 years old.
At 18 months old my parents got me a dog and he lived till I turned 21 yrs old; Have had several pets since then I will always remember him.:( RIP Peanut
When I was growing up our pets were treated a tad better than family. My parents made sure of that!! We always had a dog that we got from the local shelter. It didn't have to be a pretty animal...as long as it had a good "attitude" as mom would say. If the pet was male...he was my brother and female was my sister. Putting a pet down after 10+ years is a hard thing to do. I understand where any person's coming from when they speak of how hurt they are over losing a friend like a great pet...
FOR ALL OF YOU THAT LOST PETS.I KNOW YOUR LOSE.I HAVE TOO!BUT IF YOU THINK ABOUT IT THIS SONG CAN BE FOR HUMANS TOO.IM DYING,AND I LOVE THE SEA.LOVE THE BEACH.LOVE WATER..I WANT THIS SONG AT MY FUNERAL.I USED TO LOVE HENRY SO MUCH. IM OLDER.STILL LOVE HIIM.I LOST MANY PETS.BUT NOW IM LOSEING ME.AND STILL THIS SONG FITS!
@angelofdarkness6159 Sorry to hear this. I hope you find peace within. I can't imagine knowing what you're going through, so I just send my personal peace and love to you.
Our dog was so smart. She was a mix. Not pretty is putting it mildly. She was wonderful. When one of my family members fell and was knocked out, she woke up with a blanket covering her. The dog was lying right there, passed on.
I cam out of the Army in 78 and lived in the woods out of my jeep, a cop that came back now and then gave me a puppy, a mut. I named her Cuddles cause she would cuddle during the night, had her for 7 yrs. she got Cancer and I put her down when she started suffering. One of the worst days of my life I held her in my arms while the vet gave her the needle. She looked up at me and licked my face, I still cry when I think of her sometime.
@ShannaLinnea So let the "old men" enjoy it without your assinine comment. I think just for spite I'll post a disrespectful (and oh, so vulgar) comment on a song I think you'd like...be watching for it! In the meantime, FUCK OFF.
@EyeDreamMellowDees Sorry dreamy eyes, but the song is indeed about a dog. Read on Henry Gross' website, the story is all there. BTW I am putting my dog to sleep today at 4:15 and her name is Shannon. I am going to have my daughter record this song as soon as her sad spirit will allow her to get through it. I agree with the comment below 'God never made a more pure soul than a dog!!
@EyeDreamMellowDees Shannon is about "A" dog....Wild Horse obviously wasn't about wild horses as the "wild horses" was part of an old expression used to refer to something else... "Wild horses" wasn't even a metaphor
I think this was written about Brian Wilson's dog, Shannon, of the Beach Boys? At least that was impression I had back when the song came out. And like everyone else here, I've lost a well loved pet, but I hate that word "PET". I like to think of them as a liottle bit of heaven that we have the privlidge of sharing some of lifes best moments with. They undoubtably enhance all our lives for the better Love me, love my Pup, cat, flying squirrel, possum, and the list goes on.
@MrDoc1951 yes your right,i used to get into this guys so much at 15 years old,48 now.damn i feel old lol.i still love this song.i used to write to his record company and i became friends with woman there.we wrote for long time back and forth.i hear this song and it takes me back.yes brian wilsons irish setter.now im dieing and the words still fit!
It's funny...I didn't particularly like this song back when it came out--thought it was too sentimental-touchy-feely. Now I listen to it and feel great nostalgia, remembering being a teenager in the seventies. I miss the times and the family and friends that are gone now.
When this song was popular, I had no idea it was about a dog. I was 11 years old and every week, my buddy and I would go to the Overbrook Public School dance where they would bring out an old record player and a box of 45s. Wonderful memories of a simpler time when it seemed like anything was possible.
I forgot all about this song, until I met my cousin Shannon's daughter yesterday. Only my cousin Shannon is male and I had not seen him since the early 70's when he was about 7, I always thought of him when this song came out. Plus I used to sing it to death.
hmmm a time when I would dare to do anything just bout near, loved the 70's era, had lots of friends, had fun, a time between teen and wanting to be free! I love this song.
untill someone has had a pet..they cannot possibly comment ..we had two dogs ...mine (Mutly was 22)and my Hubby's(Jodey 18)..we had them put to sleep due to their ill health at our home ,they died in our arms ......a dreadful experience..i Truly swear i mourned them for many months ...and i still miss them to this day after five years... very touching song ...x
@truditildes --Love your post-- so true, people who say replace pets like a car are heartless and have no idea about life. Morons is too nice a word for them. Sorry for your loss
@truditildes my heart goes out to you trudi i had to put my shepard Baron down hardest thing i ever did i d rather have gone back to rather go tto nam instead of doing tha t but his suffering was to great now i m going to have to put my kitty down soon shes 16 and she s hurting but i beleive we ll see them again in anothe r place God s watching over all of them trudi take care
I had a dog named Shannon when I lived in Spenser NC. My mom made me leave her at the pound when we moved to Ga. She was the sweetest dog ever. I hope she found a good home.
I miss having a dog and a cat, they just wouldn't fit into my selfish lifestyle right now,but someday that will change and i will have a black lab again.
Its been 13 years since I put my 14 year old German Shepard to sleep... and I miss him. I had him since I was 4 years old... I don't think I'll ever forget him or the painful decision to have to put him to sleep. :( I miss you Sarge!
came home tonite after a 12 hour shift and found my 23 yr old maine coon cat bearly clinging to life.he was to weak to stand but i stood him up and he drank a little water.i talked to him and stroked his head and he was purring.within 5 min.hewas gone.goodbye cc cat.i'll missyou
@bigorange113 Condolences on the loss of a long and true companion. It is said that love cannot be measured until the hour of parting. May memories keep you. All best.
I just had to put my dog to sleep yesterday. She'd been sick for a while, but I didn't know it was serious until a few days ago, and we found out she couldn't be saved. I cried more in the past two days more than I have about anything. Saying goodbye to her was the hardest thing I've ever had to do, and I can only wish that I'd spent more time with her and let her know more often how much I loved her. But I have to believe I'll see her again one day. I'll miss you Duchess.
Yep. I used to laugh at people who treated their pets like humans. But when I lost my cat, I got kind of choked up. Crazy. I guess I see what people mean by pets are really important. In any case, this is a great song.
It's been 2 months today, that I lost my Boston Terrier , Lovey. She was 16 years old, and was the "daughter" I never had. She slept in my bed, rode to work with me, and rode in my dumptruck with me every day. She traveled up and down the east coast with my husband and I on trips, and walked in Times Square, and so many popular places. I love her, and miss her SO much. :( I remember this song came out when I was 8 or 9 years old, and I loved it then. I love and miss you, my sweet baby girl!! <3

Makes me think of my gf Sharon....she's gone now...I blew it in the 90s and she ended up rooming with her murderer. I feel so helpless these days knowing that she was indeed the woman that I should have married. I was in my mid to late 20s and very very stupid. God Bless you baby...I still and will always love you.
@aceofosea do you know his brother? Where is that documented about his brother? You have your facts wrong. It was written about his freind Carl Wilson's dog. How do you know when he wrote the song or was aware of his brother's problems. It turned out to be a huge hit, the only hit he had. I'm sure his brother was very proud. I don't get your point. What is he supposed to write a song about his brother? I know many people, myself included that have gone into a depression from a loss of a pet.
@Heartlight62, God Bless you for the feelings you felt for your darling pets! No one can ever take away those feelings my love! I feel the same way as you do, and am so thankful that God gave me the pleasure of sharing my life with some other beautiful creatures that he brought into my life! God Bless!
I lost my beautiful and sweet great pyrenee last august she was 14...we loved her so much, she was a great dog and she was part of the family, dogs bring the best in you, with their unconditional love and loyalty,,,
I cant help but find this a bit vain. Henry's brother was going through a well known drug addled depression and he writes a song about his fucking dog. Losing a pet is hard, I get that. I've lost my dog. But for fucks sake, your brother is on the edge of possible suicide and you write this?
@aceofosea People like you come on blogs wheren, HUMAN BEINGS, express heartfelt, sacred emotions about something Universally meaningful, and you intentionally say and write rude, cruel remarks to kill the loving spirit of the dialogue we all share. You must be in a lot of personal pain about life to try and hurt people by being so cruel. Most ignored you and I should have. You are not giving your opinion here, you are trying to hurt people. You are too old to be this immature. Malik Jubal
@LordIam1 Im not trying to hurt people, I am expressing my opinion. If my brother was going through a serious depression, my dog would be in the back of my head. It would be my main priority. If he was doing copious amounts of drugs, I would be there for him as much as possible. Not worrying about my dog. Sure I would be terribly sad. I had a dog for 15 years and had to put her down, hurt alot, but my brother means more to me then a dog, Henry clearly seems to think more about an animal.
@aceofosea Amen. People nowadays seem to care more about animals than they do about people. Maybe because an animal is easier to control? and doesn't require the two way communication that one needs between people. Hard to say. I just know an animal cannot, does not and should not compare to a human being. People should come first.
The guy is awesome.....thanks for the great songs!

On this date in 1976 {Feb. 28th} "Shannon" entered Billboard's Top 100 chart; eventually it would peaked at #6 and spent 20 weeks in the Top 100...
Ranked 47th on Billboard's Year-End Hot 100 Singles of 1976 chart...
Reached #1 on the Canadian Singles chart and #32 on the U.K. Singles chart...
As a member of the doo-wop revival group Sha Na Na Henry Gross was the youngest person to play the main stage at Woodstock in 1969...

@lisalisa817 Better question..songs like this are still in demand..when I grew up there were singer song writers whose songs 30-40 years old are still loved and still in demand...Lady Gagga will never fall into that...she is about shock not quality or possessing a timeless quality.
1927Norma 2 months ago

USDJ2722 2 months ago

"LOVE" only makes the heart sad...
bullshipus123 3 months ago
It's a sad song but it's also a showcase for the talent in the band, and shows what happens when all of the band members are at their best. The guitar work is bright and very good, the drumming is first rate, the bass is strong and right on and Henrys tenor vocal work steals the show. Yes?

papakilatube 3 months ago
But don't you feel better that they died peacful in your arms of the person who they love and trusted. Instead of some cold clinic all alone? Your pet was safe and comfortable in your loving arms, most likely where they loved it best. I hope you find peace. They are family to us and it is only normal to mourn them as you would another close family member. I never cried harder than when my childhood pet (dog) was put to sleep. I get sad thinking that my dog now is already 9 years old.

I cant help but find this a bit vain. Henry's brother was going through a well known drug addled depression and he writes a song about his fucking dog. Losing a pet is hard, I get that. I've lost my dog. But for fucks sake, your brother is on the edge of possible suicide and you write this?
aceofosea 5 months ago
@aceofosea People like you come on blogs wheren, HUMAN BEINGS, express heartfelt, sacred emotions about something Universally meaningful, and you intentionally say and write rude, cruel remarks to kill the loving spirit of the dialogue we all share. You must be in a lot of personal pain about life to try and hurt people by being so cruel. Most ignored you and I should have. You are not giving your opinion here, you are trying to hurt people. You are too old to be this immature. Malik Jubal
LordIam1 5 months ago 2
@LordIam1 Im not trying to hurt people, I am expressing my opinion. If my brother was going through a serious depression, my dog would be in the back of my head. It would be my main priority. If he was doing copious amounts of drugs, I would be there for him as much as possible. Not worrying about my dog. Sure I would be terribly sad. I had a dog for 15 years and had to put her down, hurt alot, but my brother means more to me then a dog, Henry clearly seems to think more about an animal.
aceofosea 5 months ago
@aceofosea Amen. People nowadays seem to care more about animals than they do about people. Maybe because an animal is easier to control? and doesn't require the two way communication that one needs between people. Hard to say. I just know an animal cannot, does not and should not compare to a human being. People should come first.
