I have a strat plus that I just recently bought, mine is inca silver but it has aged into a nice green, my pick guard is mother of pear which has also aged into a nice cream, mine is just a std strat plus, the first lot of std plus's came with white pick guard then they changed it to MOP I am told, I find the gold lace censors really close to the fender vintage pickups, much more so than the noiseless pickups they stick on the deluxe strats, I sold my deluxe as the pups were dreadful,
Great point about note for note. When learning from a master, why would you change a thing... I've been working on Pride & Joy and Tightrope for at least 6 months now...lol! I have a friend that toured with SRV when he was opening for the Fab Thunderbirds (married one of them). She was in town recently and of course I cornered her... said he was boring... did nothing but coke and play Hendrix vids "note for note"... now I'll learn from yours!
@corneiid ... ran out of space last time, but was great to read your approach. As a long time accoustic player / singer, I started to get serious about lead guitar, and accidently chose Pride And Joy to tackle first (as a complete song). Thinking it was an easy shuffle (lol), I soon learned the nuance of SRV, and decided to tackle this great and, "above my skill level," song... seeing where it took you has convinced me I'm on the right track, even if I'm just chuggin' along...lol! Thx again!
Very Good, dude. 4:02 and 4:22 's pull offs was the weak spot. The Wes Montgomery octaves did not particullarily fit. But the tone and simplicity of execution were excellent. 4:34 and 2:34 thru 3:30 is wonderfull.
this actually took me a surprisingly short time to learn, but i was learning it for a girl so it makes sense. i swear if u wanna get good at guitar the opposite sex is one of the best motivators :/
@corneiid Really realy good......You just gave me "the Faith" to night.......I expect to see who you are soon as you can not remain in those shadows........
read your comment and you're right with what u wrote. no need to defend urself. little wing by SRV is amazing. the fact you attempted to play it is a great accomplishment and should be shared. who cares about "creativity." Really? Really? that's SRV ur playing!!! everyone HAS to be a critic...
Great job but I think you had to put more of your own. The blues is not imitation... the blues is life ....is not an insult you're very good with the guitar ;)
First of all, my deepest condolences. Your probably making Stevie and Jimmy lay in the clouds and just hear the beautiful sound you make. I'm even proud of you mate. %00000000000000 Stars.
@markdocker Yeah, it's this unique system that they only put on a few fender's back in the 1990s. An attempt at creating something that's the best of both worlds. The only problem is that the intonation is very difficult to set.
Thank you so much for this outstanding video, very nice. Before I read your comments I was actually going to ask what size strings those were ... they look friggen MONSTER. Incredible tone, nice fret hand skills man.
hey man nice cover, i completely agree with your comment about the importance of learning songs like this, it just adds to the culture of how you play. ive also done a cover of little wing hope you like it
Very nice my friend!I just started playing 8 months ago and I am very taken with SRV.I have every video and every disc I could find.I am trying to learn the studio version of Texas Flood right now.Ive been workin on it for three weeks and I am already playing at speeds I never thought I would achieve.LOL.I had my strat set up for 12s,got heavy duty springs in the bridge and what not.Took a couple days to get used to the 12s for sure. Thanks for the inspiration and long live SRV!
Nice, love the sound and the guitar. Your camera angle is perfect as is your playing of this Classic. I'm glad you mentioned the hand strength it takes to build up to play like this.
Superb, you are one of two I believe have the right to cover this tune on youtube the other being diggity6470.I'd love just to hear your guitar on it's own the tone etc..I'm gonna throw some pathetic attempt at playing this and posting it here but i gotta learn it properly first and thats quite a lot of notes to remember. How long did it take you dude?
Cheers, I hate to admit it, but to get it to the point seen in the video took me 4 months of practice about 3 hours on avg a day. I'm sure a lot of people will find that pathetic, but at the time it was a song that was considerably above my ability. In particular my hands had to get a lot stronger and faster. That said, it was worth the effort. My playing took a huge leap forward. Good luck.
@smithdj7407 Hey, thanks for the comment. Funny you should find that part cool. It was actually the reason that I redid the video; i used to hate it.
It never ceases to amaze me how differently people can interpret the same piece of music.
first off wonderful playing. I feel your pain, I hate changing tunings on tremolo's, such a pain in the ass. great attack btw, i hate watching people be gentle on such heavy strings, but people lose so much dynamics when they don't dig in. I learned on 12s and I'm glad I never had a chance to get used to anything else.
thanks for this vid, its good to finally have a well recorded version to dissect.
Dude, that was beautiful. You caught every note and nuance. Makes me embarrassed to call myself a guitar player for 20 years, because I sure as hell couldn't have pulled that off. Awesome work.
LOL....well that's very kind of you to say but I'm still learning and am light years behind your playing....inspiring stuff though and you have that feel that lots of players (including me!) lack. Keep playing and thanks for your note, appreciate it !
I like this version, and i like the form that you play it.. it's clear and now i can see some of my mistakes when trying to play this song with no tabs just using my ears.. lol it souns funny but i'm from Argentina and we use another words to say some things... My congartulations very nice cover :D
ah man that was absolutely amazing, probably one the best guitar covers of anything i have ever seen... and with 13 gauge strings tuned to E standard even SRV didn't do that his were a bit looser. that blew me away!. btw i feel for you on those low g string bends from like a to b, that must have hurt like a bitch :p
I´m 11 years old and I play 2 years guitar. I´m learned Little Wing very long, but I forgot it . Then I watched your video. After then I can play it very good. See my video on next time
Holy HELL. This is the best cover of this song I've seen. Not only is it accurate, but the precision and timing and emotion is all spot on. Dude... you rock. Thanks for posting this, it's quite inspirational.
holy shit, this vid needs alot more recognition than it gets, this is the best cover ive heard; and hell its a hard song even for an experienced player. perfectly done :P
Hey, I agree that to a certain extent it doesn't matter and most people can't tell the difference. Then again most people can't tune a guitar.
If you have a moment take 10 seconds and do this experiment for me. String one guitar up with 8 (extra light) and another with 13 or 12's. Then strum an open E chord and tell me which one sounds better. To me the difference is as drastic as changing the pickups or the amp. It is the cheapest way I know off to improve the tone of your guitar.
Ha, yeah it's going take about an hour, but I stand by what I said. There's a reason why guys like SRV destroyed hands playing on gauge 13 strings and it's all about tone.
Stevie used to super glue his callouses back on so he wouldn't have to drop a gauge.
I remember reading that at the end...before his death, that he went lighter on the top end so he wouldn't wear his hands out. He had an 11 on top towards the end.
something to consider is if someone can't handle 12s or 11s their tone will sound weak. Vibrato will be weak and bending will be limited. Strong Hands make for good tone...more so than 13 gauge strings.
@corneiid to be clear, SRV technically used .12 gauge strings since he tuned his guitar a half step down and it releases A LOT of tension for every half note you go down.
I know what you mean, but just so the readers understand SRV used 13 gauge tuned a half step down (which has the feel of 12 gauge).
In any case, I really want someone to post a video demonstrating the difference in tone between light gauge and heavy gauge. I think people underestimate the difference that this makes. Maybe I'll take the time to do it.
@corneiid ya it has a huge difference in tone. Mainly that "wow" factor resonation when you strike a chord with a heavy gauge. But seriously even 11 gauge are hard to play anything except rhythm. The fact that SRV used "12's" and played effortlessly is beyond my imagination. Also, when using strings of the same gauge, the Strat's will have a much harder resistence then say, a Les Paul since it's a longer neck than the LP. Which makes the fact that he used "12's" all the more mind-boggling!
@corneiid It was actually closer to some 11's with subbed out E's from a larger gauge. I have Ernie Ball 12's (not even slinky) and all but two strings are bigger than SRV's set.
Not to downsize it or anything, I just think people are worried about the specifics too much. 11's, 12's, whatever. There's pretty much thick and thin strings, the rest is soul.
@corneiid I used to have 8's when i first started.. Now im at 10s i'd like to be playing on 13s but im ashamed to say my fingers are to wimpy for that heavy of a gauge
WOOOOOOOW that was awesomeeeee!! Seriously that was definately the most incredible thing ive ever seen on youtube haha. I can only play the intro as of now, but thats good enough for me. I love the divebomb thing too that sounded great!
Just for my wife - and she lost enthusiasm after the 300th rendition. It actually requires a pretty proficient bass player and drummer and I haven't found anyone willing to commit to it.
Thats too bad. I'm just in high school, attempting to learn this song, and I've been using your video as a guide to learn it. The funny thing is, I actually know a bass player and drummer good enough to play it, I just need to learn it. I really doubt I'll be able to get the whole thing down though. Mayby someday.
I'm so glad that you're using my video to learn this tune. I did the same thing when I was learning it, but I found that most of the videos were either too blurry or the player gave up half way through.
Don't give up on this tune, I was 30 before I could play it start to finish. The fact that you're trying something this advanced at a young age speaks volumes. Good luck.
Thanks, I play in a band with a few guys from Toronto. I actually play bass in that group. Not too sure what I'm going to do the stuff I post here. Might form a bluegrass band at some point, but I need to meet some pretty odd dudes before that's gonna happen.
cool video... keep in mind: Hendrix, BB King, Billy Gibbons, and Brent Mason play or played 9-42's and are all universally praised for their great tone. Brad Paisley uses 10-46's... Albert King used 9's tuned down 3 half-steps! Albert Collins used 9's, sometimes 10's.... personally while I admire SRV, I like the TONE of all the players I've mentioned more than Stevie Ray's
No question it's a matter of personal preference, but I've got a book written by the a master Luther who did setups for almost all the famous blues players over the last 50 years.
Almost without exception they have high action and heavy strings (10 or 11 is most common). Typically when they don't the reason is because their hands are giving them problems.
I have a question that i hope you can answer corneiid, I just got myself a 2008 american standard fender, most beautifull guitar i've ever seen or played she's a sienna burst with a maple neck.
Now i have no problem with heavy gauge and i'm thinkin of going to 13's ( i play with 12's ).
The question is, would it have a negative effect on my guitar since this one is maple and not rosewood? Hope you understand the question thanks and happy new years! :)
Hey that's a great guitar. If' it's set up well 13's shouldn't be an issue. I know that SRV tuned down a half step to help his fingers and the guitar and you may also need to widen the nut slots to accommodate the extra width of the strings. Beyond that I think you'll be okay.
A program called the Amazing Slowdowner. It allows you to change the tempo without changing the pitch and change the pitch without changing the tempo. As a result, you can tune the song to your guitar, which is much faster.
Nice discussion about string gauges, tone and PAIN. I have a strat like yours mate and i play with 11's. Gives nice fat rhytm sound and i have rather big and fat fingers so i can handle bending all the time without feeling anything bad. instead of going higher i just set my action high (lets the strings vibrate 100%) where many people try to get the action as low as possible, and i play very hard with my picking hand. btw, very straight necks sucks! destroys your tone.a little neckcurve is good
Man what the fuck are you doing playing if you are with tendinitis?? ehh you need to rest, and one question haha, i play with .10 but i want more bass sound, if i change for the .12 in standard?? do you think i can get sick or something??
No worries about the English, I'm sure it's better than my ________. When you go up to higher gauge strings just listen to what your hands are telling you. If you feel pain stop and reduce the gauge.
If you have stock strings then yes you'll have to adjust the truss rod, springs and nut. All are relatively easy to do but if you've never done it before it's best to bring it to a professional. It is a valuable skill to learn. There are a lot of youtube videos about this if you're interested.
As jfknet said, "the way you play is more important that string gauge", but that being said, you will not sound like SRV playing on 9 or 10s. The guitar will sound so much fatter with higher gauges.
In terms of setup, you're going to need to tighten your tremolo springs, adjust the truss rod and reset your intonation. If you're not confident adjusting a truss rod take it to a pro and spend 30 dollars . It's not that hard to do, but you don't want to ruin your guitar.
Great Job! I'm about 3/5 of the way through learning this and it is a toughie. I play on 11's and I always play in Eb. It's really all in your hands for tone and the rake. For people wanting his tone and wanting to learn how to sound like stevie, learn good rake and play hard. I found that more important than string gauge actually for the tone. You literally have to attack the guitar period. Guitar pro helps make it easier on your timing, and it's hard at first to rem note for note by ear.
Ahhh you under estimate yourself. it's more about perseverance than talent. I would have said the same thing right up to the point where I 'almost' played it :).
i envy you.....greatly. but seriously great job im just beginning to tackle this song and it seems like ive bitten off more than i can chew already. and how are you getting that tone? its awesome.
When I first started this song I wasn't very confident that I could play it either. It's primarily an exercise in dedication. I spent about 4 months, for three hours a night before I got it.
As for the tone, all I can tell you is thick strings, a strat and a tube amp help.
Excellent, gotta love the tone of those fat strings. Great playing. I did the .013 gauge for a bit when I was younger but gave up on it eventually. I play .011s now in standard tuning.
the more I listne to this the more I am impressed... this is deadon and I don't think most people understand how hard this song is.... SRV would be very proud!
awesome job man... It took me about 8 weeks off and on to get this right too... One hell of a Song to tackle. by time I got it right my wife was so sick of it, it did not matter. lol
Ha, that's hilarious. My wife felt exactly the same way. By the time you can play it all your friends and family are so sick of it that no one will listen.
THANKS! so much for posting this video. I love this song and I have been working on it on and off this past week.
I have the first 2 bars down!
I really like like that you've done it in the key of E - that helps immensely. No messing around retuning so my guitar feels normal while I'm learning.
I plan to keep working on it. Its such a damn tasty song, it just makes anyone who can play it sound like a magician. :-)
It's incredibly important to stretch the fingers when you are playing heavier gauge strings. so I start by folding them back over the top then I spread them apart in between each finger... give it 2minutes every time you play and you'll be golden.
how did you deal with tendinitis? I've read interviews with srv where he says it destroyed his hands but I've always wondered what he actually meant/how bad it was. I tried higher gauge strings and my pointer finger has been stiff so ive been taking a break and its brutal to not play when you really want to...
that being said this is beyond words... so well done. im at the point where i just know part of it and improv the rest but seeing this just leaves me in awe. tone is so beautiful.
i have small hands and use 11s and 12s in Eb on a standard strat and that is enough for me. the jump from 11 to 12 is drastic. my fingertips were cracked and raw after my first 3 hours playing on them. i couldnt curl my index finger against any kind of resistance.
but you get used to it. i have calluses now that feel like molded plastic and my fingers have gotten way stronger. i may end up with arthritis when im a geezer, but i dont care. i love playing and i love that heavy gauge tone.
Hey, that stiffness in your pointer finger is exactly what happened to me. When I was playing with 13's it got to the point where I was seriously worried that I was not going to have a very short career.
The solution is simple though, go way down on your string gauge. I dropped down to 9s and then worked my way back up to 12. I also agree with robdorg that tuning down 1/2 step can help. Stay positive, with rest, ice and stretching it does get better.
They're lace sensor pickups (Blue Lace Sensor in the neck, a Silver Lace Sensor in the middle, a Red Lace Sensor in the bridge and a Fender/Floyd Rose locking bridge).
The Amp is a British Vox AC30 run through a Seymour Duncan twin tube pedal.
Without a doupt, the best srv cover i've ever seen. And quite possibly the best guitar cover i've seen in my life. I was really impressed and inspired, thanks for this wonderful piece of art! Rock on my friend.
heh.... watching thsi was awesom... I honestly only learnt up to 2:09 and even that took me days, then I just use the hendrix (studio?) version solo cause it's easier.... Really great job learning the whole thing... Yeah I'm playing on 12s too so I know what ya mean :P
Thanks so much for that comment. I think that one of the interesting things about this song is how much it stays with you. You learn part of it and then years later you come back and learn a little more, and then one day you decide to learn the rest. It always offers a challenge - even now I find it daunting.
I still remember the first time I heard it and thought wow "I'll never be able to play that"
love your tone !!

ah man that was absolutely amazing, probably one the best guitar covers of anything i have ever seen... and with 13 gauge strings tuned to E standard even SRV didn't do that his were a bit looser. that blew me away!. btw i feel for you on those low g string bends from like a to b, that must have hurt like a bitch :p

use 10 guage. nobody will be able to tell.
stevieVantanna 2 years ago
Hey, I agree that to a certain extent it doesn't matter and most people can't tell the difference. Then again most people can't tune a guitar.
If you have a moment take 10 seconds and do this experiment for me. String one guitar up with 8 (extra light) and another with 13 or 12's. Then strum an open E chord and tell me which one sounds better. To me the difference is as drastic as changing the pickups or the amp. It is the cheapest way I know off to improve the tone of your guitar.
corneiid 2 years ago

I think it will take longer then 10 seconds! haha ;)
really when playing clean less then 10 will sound thin butt all you need is 10
stevieVantanna 2 years ago
Ha, yeah it's going take about an hour, but I stand by what I said. There's a reason why guys like SRV destroyed hands playing on gauge 13 strings and it's all about tone.
Stevie used to super glue his callouses back on so he wouldn't have to drop a gauge.
corneiid 2 years ago
I remember reading that at the end...before his death, that he went lighter on the top end so he wouldn't wear his hands out. He had an 11 on top towards the end.
something to consider is if someone can't handle 12s or 11s their tone will sound weak. Vibrato will be weak and bending will be limited. Strong Hands make for good tone...more so than 13 gauge strings.
stevieVantanna 2 years ago
@corneiid to be clear, SRV technically used .12 gauge strings since he tuned his guitar a half step down and it releases A LOT of tension for every half note you go down.
usefulcoin 1 year ago
I know what you mean, but just so the readers understand SRV used 13 gauge tuned a half step down (which has the feel of 12 gauge).
In any case, I really want someone to post a video demonstrating the difference in tone between light gauge and heavy gauge. I think people underestimate the difference that this makes. Maybe I'll take the time to do it.
corneiid 1 year ago
@corneiid ya it has a huge difference in tone. Mainly that "wow" factor resonation when you strike a chord with a heavy gauge. But seriously even 11 gauge are hard to play anything except rhythm. The fact that SRV used "12's" and played effortlessly is beyond my imagination. Also, when using strings of the same gauge, the Strat's will have a much harder resistence then say, a Les Paul since it's a longer neck than the LP. Which makes the fact that he used "12's" all the more mind-boggling!
usefulcoin 1 year ago
@corneiid It was actually closer to some 11's with subbed out E's from a larger gauge. I have Ernie Ball 12's (not even slinky) and all but two strings are bigger than SRV's set.
Not to downsize it or anything, I just think people are worried about the specifics too much. 11's, 12's, whatever. There's pretty much thick and thin strings, the rest is soul.

Have you performed this song out at any gigs anywhere yet? It would be awesome to see.
richg199 2 years ago
Just for my wife - and she lost enthusiasm after the 300th rendition. It actually requires a pretty proficient bass player and drummer and I haven't found anyone willing to commit to it.
Thanks for the comment.
corneiid 2 years ago
Thats too bad. I'm just in high school, attempting to learn this song, and I've been using your video as a guide to learn it. The funny thing is, I actually know a bass player and drummer good enough to play it, I just need to learn it. I really doubt I'll be able to get the whole thing down though. Mayby someday.
richg199 2 years ago
I'm so glad that you're using my video to learn this tune. I did the same thing when I was learning it, but I found that most of the videos were either too blurry or the player gave up half way through.
Don't give up on this tune, I was 30 before I could play it start to finish. The fact that you're trying something this advanced at a young age speaks volumes. Good luck.

I am a drummer. You are really good. Wow, even. I live in Georgia. Have you had any offers to play yet?

AJLove77 2 years ago
No question it's a matter of personal preference, but I've got a book written by the a master Luther who did setups for almost all the famous blues players over the last 50 years.
Almost without exception they have high action and heavy strings (10 or 11 is most common). Typically when they don't the reason is because their hands are giving them problems.
corneiid 2 years ago
I have a question that i hope you can answer corneiid, I just got myself a 2008 american standard fender, most beautifull guitar i've ever seen or played she's a sienna burst with a maple neck.
Now i have no problem with heavy gauge and i'm thinkin of going to 13's ( i play with 12's ).
The question is, would it have a negative effect on my guitar since this one is maple and not rosewood? Hope you understand the question thanks and happy new years! :)
gmproductions12 2 years ago
Hey that's a great guitar. If' it's set up well 13's shouldn't be an issue. I know that SRV tuned down a half step to help his fingers and the guitar and you may also need to widen the nut slots to accommodate the extra width of the strings. Beyond that I think you'll be okay.
corneiid 2 years ago
Excellent job, could hardly sound better, congratulations and thanks a lot !

What software/hardware did you use to record this? 5/5
MrKayetanBucker 2 years ago
A program called the Amazing Slowdowner. It allows you to change the tempo without changing the pitch and change the pitch without changing the tempo. As a result, you can tune the song to your guitar, which is much faster.
Thanks,
corneiid 2 years ago
It terms of the recording I used a digital camera, my strat and a vox.

a digital camera lol... not bad, i was thinking of buying special equipment... but you get quite good sound

woah i'd like to see you play on 9s! That cover was excellent
MrPinkZeppelin 2 years ago
Nice discussion about string gauges, tone and PAIN. I have a strat like yours mate and i play with 11's. Gives nice fat rhytm sound and i have rather big and fat fingers so i can handle bending all the time without feeling anything bad. instead of going higher i just set my action high (lets the strings vibrate 100%) where many people try to get the action as low as possible, and i play very hard with my picking hand. btw, very straight necks sucks! destroys your tone.a little neckcurve is good
25jonathan 2 years ago
I agree with everything you said, Use a thick pick (Jazz 3 is a great option), set your action high and don't worry too much about the truss rod.
I learned most of that from a book called 'A Guitar Player's Repair Guide.' One of the big lesson's was the importance of raising your strings.

Man what the fuck are you doing playing if you are with tendinitis?? ehh you need to rest, and one question haha, i play with .10 but i want more bass sound, if i change for the .12 in standard?? do you think i can get sick or something??
Cheers and sorry for my english :D
edgarrg94 2 years ago
No worries about the English, I'm sure it's better than my ________. When you go up to higher gauge strings just listen to what your hands are telling you. If you feel pain stop and reduce the gauge.

My strat is just a squire...i put gauge 11 on it.what will i adjust?its like i'm afraid to udjust the truss rod.
topaz0708 2 years ago
If you have stock strings then yes you'll have to adjust the truss rod, springs and nut. All are relatively easy to do but if you've never done it before it's best to bring it to a professional. It is a valuable skill to learn. There are a lot of youtube videos about this if you're interested.
PatrickIsLost 2 years ago

Guitar pro helps make it easier on your timing, and it's hard at first to rem note for note by ear.
jfknet 2 years ago
this is... incredible. 4 months to learn wow!

When I first started this song I wasn't very confident that I could play it either. It's primarily an exercise in dedication. I spent about 4 months, for three hours a night before I got it.
As for the tone, all I can tell you is thick strings, a strat and a tube amp help.

THANKS! so much for posting this video.
Thanks again!

It's incredibly important to stretch the fingers when you are playing heavier gauge strings. so I start by folding them back over the top then I spread them apart in between each finger... give it 2minutes every time you play and you'll be golden.
costaricangeneral 2 years ago
Solid.
Archangelless 2 years ago
how did you deal with tendinitis? I've read interviews with srv where he says it destroyed his hands but I've always wondered what he actually meant/how bad it was. I tried higher gauge strings and my pointer finger has been stiff so ive been taking a break and its brutal to not play when you really want to...
that being said this is beyond words... so well done. im at the point where i just know part of it and improv the rest but seeing this just leaves me in awe. tone is so beautiful.
carlzard 2 years ago
i have small hands and use 11s and 12s in Eb on a standard strat and that is enough for me. the jump from 11 to 12 is drastic. my fingertips were cracked and raw after my first 3 hours playing on them. i couldnt curl my index finger against any kind of resistance.
but you get used to it. i have calluses now that feel like molded plastic and my fingers have gotten way stronger. i may end up with arthritis when im a geezer, but i dont care. i love playing and i love that heavy gauge tone.
robdorg 2 years ago
Hey, that stiffness in your pointer finger is exactly what happened to me. When I was playing with 13's it got to the point where I was seriously worried that I was not going to have a very short career.
The solution is simple though, go way down on your string gauge. I dropped down to 9s and then worked my way back up to 12. I also agree with robdorg that tuning down 1/2 step can help. Stay positive, with rest, ice and stretching it does get better.
corneiid 2 years ago
this is awesome and playing this on .12s is just downright incredible. excellent work and your playing just oozes with feeling

are they emg pickups? and what amp are u using? thanks
HDWMusic 2 years ago
They're lace sensor pickups (Blue Lace Sensor in the neck, a Silver Lace Sensor in the middle, a Red Lace Sensor in the bridge and a Fender/Floyd Rose locking bridge).
The Amp is a British Vox AC30 run through a Seymour Duncan twin tube pedal.
