Shendu would have been defeated by Lu Dongbin with a sword but in another episode it's stated that a warrior named Lo Pei turned him into a statue.

In any case, I don't think they ever said that they were supposed to represent the elements. And all of them are symbols, and in Chinese mythology, there are deities that represent each of them.

I don't understand. Shendu was never banished by the Eight Immortals; he was defeated and turned into a statue by Lo Pei. If he had been defeated by the Eight Immortals, then he should have been able to open the Fire Demon Portal twice but in the episode the Eighth Door it's implied that it can only be opened once (unlike the other demon portals, which were all opened twice; once to release the demon and once to send it back)

@Horticultural1 Im going on 2 theories here but i think Shendu had his butt kicked twice 1st along with his bretherin by the 8 then the 2nd time he returned all on his own and then was again defeated and turned into a statue by Lo Pei. Or maybe on theory #2 Lo Pei was one of the 8 immortals but for some reason they used a bald guy instead of Lo Pei's character durring the cutscene (WHY i dont know, dont make sense to me either).

@LORDMEHMOODPASHA Theory one could be right, although Shendu was banished for the first time by Uncle at the end of this season. Lo Pei was not one of the Eight Immortals though; the Eight Immortals are actually real characters from Chinese folklore. Even though they're not named in the series, you can recognize them by the religious symbols that they use to banish the demons; the Immortal Sword that banished Shendu belonged to their leader, Lu Dongbin.

@LORDMEHMOODPASHA the first one was the right one, as in the the first episode of season 2 , the other demons said that shendu did not attempt to free them when he escaped and desired the earth for himself, he then sought more power and gained the powers from the other noble animals only to be turned into a statue by lo pei and have them extracted into the form of talismans, after he was technically killed by jade at end of season 1, his spirit returned to the netherworld where his siblings are

I've been doing some research on the 8 immortals, and I think that based on their appearances, the immortals are matched up with the wrong demons. The first immortal shown (the Immortal Woman) should be against Tso Lan since she had the lotus symbol, and a few demons later, the guy with the fan should've been with Xiao Fung (who was right after) and the old man with the sword should've been with Shendu (again, shown right after).

I'm kind of confuse with Shendu's history. I thought he was turned into a statue by lo-pi. So why do they show him being sealed away with the other demons. And if he did got sealed how did he got out???

@GoodBoy1196 If I'm not mistaken, Shen Du was sealed along with the other demons by the eight immortals and later escaped from the netherworld. sadly, warner bros. never show how did he escape. then Lo pei along with the ancestors of modern-day china rebelled against him and turned him into the statue. That explain why the demons resented him for being on earth for 900 years.

Now with that said, there is a plot hole in the series because in this episode they make it seem like shendu was never banished and was turned into a statue, but in the episode when jade is trapped in the nether world we learn that shendu has a portal so he had to be banished before

The Immortal banishing Hsi Wu is holding a lotus flower, the Immortal banishing Dai Gui is holding a fan, and the Immortal banishing Xiao Fung is holding a sword!
