mega, the 80's werent so strange. As a kid growing up then it was very little different from now. Commercial advertising was at a peak because of movie tie in's to selling products. commericals were confined to tv's so advertising had to be more crafty than now. Commercials had jingles so peopl could remember them. People will remember songs faster than mere sentences.
@megabeavis mega, I lived through the 80's. They werent that hard to understand. cross Merchandising was beginning. And tv commercials presented kind of optomistic view towards everything. No one talked about consequences. It was all about dressing things up to look fun.

walk to the library to get information you didn't know,
camp out for a song to come on the radio with the cassette ready if you wanted to rip a song,
share one (or if you were lucky) two phones in your house,
limited to ATARI 2600 for video games
etc
