  • The person in the middle looks what I thought an ancient Egyptian looked like. He looks like a prince, sort of.

  • WAXIN' DOWN YO' FLEETWOOD......................

  • I was introduce to Black Ivory in the 90's even though i was an avid listener to the music from the 50's, 60's and 70's R&B and Soul, and i remember when i first heard this song, i was like DAMN! these guy's are as great as the Delfonics, Dramatics, Blue Majic, ect. My cousin had put this album on FB and I thank him 4 it. Its so good to hear these song again.

  • Went to school with them. Back in the 70's this is what music sound like, gave you such a good feeling. Wish this music could come back!

  • Bad tune!

  • i remember dancing in nyc to this .Slooooow dancing NO BODY DANCES SLOW ANY MORE EXCEPT IN A DAM WEDDING.

  • I LOVE the modern cats trying to REMAKE this sound (down to the record pops) with new songs! LOVE IT!

  • We LOVE each other and thats all that REALLY MATTER.

  • Any body know who was on Bass?

  • Quick, somebody grab me! Let's slowdrag.

  • This beautiful song makes me wanna cry because this music is so clean, so pure and so full of talent. I will always love and listen to this sound for it is love, it is music and it was my world as a young black man in junior high school. Thank you for the post.

  • I slow danced for the first time at with the finest girl in the world! I sang this song all night afterwards. Hahahaha! Newark, NJ, 1972 8th grade dance.

  • @smartin233 Must have been nice, wish i could've made some memories like that to music like this.

  • Thank God for You Tube! Heard it on WHUR and I've been looking for it ever since. I'm 44 and I grew up to music like this. Music the way it should be.

  • @NatureB3 same here courtesy of the late Melvin Lindsey and WHUR Quiet Storm

  • @anacostia73 Also shout outs to Alvin Jones, Mansey Pullem, Chris James and the current host Jeff Brown and all the other hosts of "The Original Quiet Storm" on WHUR! Thanks for the message.

  • @NatureB3 oh yes certainly cant forgot those distinguish gentlemen ;-)

  • Yra im young but when I listened to this th four tops the spinners and mostly old bands I love that music!!!!!

  • Stand up anyone who was grinding to this listening to Lonnie Tucker on WNJR in Newark NJ!

  • Can you find a live version of this?

  • one of the best songs i've ever heard

  • yes, absolutely...this was the time when music was about pure and simple love...i'm 55, this is what I listened to when I was a teenager... and I will never forget the lyrics and the feeling I felt back then when I listened to these beautiful Motown songs. I listen to them today and my 16 year old understands totally why I feel the way I do about this music...She agrees that this is when music was awesome...

  • Man...this has become of of my favorite songs ever! It NEVER EVER GETS OLD! If any record execs are reading this, restore and remaster this version and get it on iTunes ASAP!!!

  • Serious "grinding" jams and "blacklight" houseparty in the basement tunes!!!:)

  • @Sheila1775 OH YES..those were the days for sure! I almost forgot the black light...a punch bowl, with a "special mix" and yes a grind to a slow jam...and dizzy headed feeling of kissing some fine little honey you've been chasing for a while. When asked do I wish I was young.....only if I go back and be a teen in the 70's.

  • I was at University of Delawware when they were practicing. Lead was strong but background could have used some girls and a bass singer. They had the potential, but didn't really go for it. Records sold locally ( I supported them) but they could have been national or international stars. I love these guys. -- I was there!!!!

  • I just love the horn and string arrangements on this

  • Man Im 18 I Love Music Like This I Wish I Was Born In The 70's

  • @YUNGONNA1 Actually to really enjoy it, you'd have to have been in the late 50's early 60's. I was a teen in the 70's when this song came out. What does this remind me of? A basement party in South Central L.A., a low watt yellow or blue light bulb, slow dancing with a young honey....trying to get your grind on, and keep your 'fro tight all at the same time. You'd be cherishing those memories as I do now. :-)

  • @tonybklyn Yes I Would Like I Can't Stand Music These Days I Don't Even Watch BET Like That

  • THOUGH THEY WERE FROM NYC..

    THIS WAS/IS A

    B-MORE CLASSIC!

  • I find it easy to appreciate to happiness that I enjoy about those days. Wonderful summers dancing with your lady......having loving understanding.

  • FIRST HEARD THIS CUT IN BROOKLYN, THEY WERE A LOCAL GROUP AT THE TIME......WWRL HAD THIS SONG NUMBER ONE...I THINK I WAS IN THE 7TH GRADE...SOME OF THE GUYS WERE SCARED TO SLOW DANCE.....LOL

  • Central High K.C.,Smaks ,Chicken Inn,Jazz City ,O.G.'s,Velvet Freeze,The Candy Store,The old YMCA,T.G.& Y...this track brings back memories of days way gone...

  • damn this is some soulful ass music!!!!!!!!!!!!! omg bring this back

  • I got video footage of them singing this song

  • @tykeee6 I would so LOVE to see that.

  • @tykeee6

Can we see the video footage :-)

  • this is a song the jackson five could of covered quite well..i can see lil michael hi voice perfecting this song

  • @mightymikec7 - They covered "Got to Be There."

  • just lovely!

  • I love this spnggggggggggggggggg!!!

  • Exellent! And didn't I get my ass beat for sneaking outta Jersey w/gf's to Woodside Queens to see Black Ivory who were supposed to be at WWRL radio station, just to meet Black Ivory. We met them and it worth the beat down my Dad gve me!

  • @princessgraification LOL! Sounds like the Cosby Show episode.

  • I am so thankful for this album and all the music that help shape my teenage years. This song brings tears to my eyes recalling all the memories. Me and my best friend Clint (RIP) making the hike up to see Vennie B. and her sister Niecy and slow dragging to this. All the 25 cent basement parties and music like this was playing. What a time to be alive.

  • I remember going over to my neighbor Theresa's house to listen tothis album everyday!!! And I was only 10!!!

  • I just listened to Q-tip's "Gettin Up" and had to listen to this song, love the oldies. Lotta DMV representation in the comments, lol, I was raised in MoCo

  • wiz khalifa brought me here

  • They certainly don't make it like this anymore! 1970's on Wahler Place S.E. Man, what days we had with this song!!! Thanks for posting!!!!!

  • @AQJONES2798 you must not have hung on condon terrace, where we had the big speakers on the porch pushing all the good music, 4 corners, dang lol what a good time

  • I love this - the intro, the musicians, Leroy's sweet falsetto and Russell and Stuart's outstanding background singing. "Cause we're the best together, baby," maann, I recall how a certain guy made me feel at the time -- real love songs will always have a place in my heart. "We love each other and that's aalll that really matters," love it, love it.

  • OMG, why did these times have to leave! Anacostia definitely in the house then and now!

  • I was living in Rockville, MD when this came out, 1972, purchased the album downtown ( haha) at Rockville Mall.

  • man, im 20 and I have to say I was raised off of motown and philly soul. my parents listen to it so much I get the context of what they are talking about. I just wish music was like this today no sex, no violence or misogyny. just pure love and real stories. we dont have that anymore. I gotta sneak around the corner to listen to music like this so my friends dont put me down for not listening to gucci mane or waka flocka like they do, I honestely think that music is TRASH!

  • @jjtiojohn12 I would say your parents indoctrinated you into some real music in the R&B/soul genre and that's to your advantage because its made you a more discerning individual. Like your parents, this was the music of my youth and I still have an extreme attachment to it. Forty years later, Black Ivory is still remembered and are legendary, can we honestly say the same thing will be the case for current artists. You and I both know the answer to that question.

  • @kariebeez the music of today only shows how bad music programs are needed back into the public school system because the reason why music is so digitized from computer programs like fruity loops or reason. it is because kids today cant sit down and properly learn how to play an instrument, so they show a lack of disrespect for black musicians. kids today will never have a chanse to be the next prince, roy ayres, wynton marsallis, or another bobbi humphery. it goes to show you there music dying

  • @jjtiojohn12 do your own thing, dont worry about what others think. Enjoy this music obvisouly you have a ear for good music!!

  • @jjtiojohn12 I agree!

  • @jjtiojohn12 i'm in the same boat dude, except you gotta bump this soul music everywhere you go, and rep the shit out of it.!!!!

  • @jjtiojohn12 That describes my situation perfectly! They ask me why I listen to music before we were born, I stare at them and say WHY THE HELL NOT IT'S GREAT MUSIC!!

  • @jjtiojohn12

Same Here, I'm 24 and I have an old soul, I was raised by my grandmother! But I had one ignorant individual refer to my music as "pooping music" WHAT?!?!?! WHERE"S THE IRONY IN THAT,LOL!!! Just because the music these days will definitely get you in trouble! Only selected few still that....A majority from Philly!! Team Jill Scott...I will Love her FOREVEEERRR!

  • @jjtiojohn12 Your parents raised you right!

  • @jjtiojohn12 and i been bashing them 20 yr olds for not appreciating. but you are that kid. can't call u a man yet lil brother cuz yo ass aint 21 yet. lmaoo just kidding. like your parents and my self . we aint trying to take you away from your era, but just appreciate what was there before all this madness. thanks for being patient. one love. from brooklyn nyc. im 39 so imagine.

  • @jjtiojohn12 fuck that man...it's great to see you have such love for this type of music but I'll bump this in any neighborhood if i feel like it, cause this is MUSIC. Anyone who disagree and downs me by laughing or any source of embarrassment is ignorant because if i respect what they listen to, even if I'm completely disgusted with music in this present day, they should respect what i listen to.

  • @jjtiojohn12 Gucci Mane is not evn music. I always prefer joints like this(especially Rap from '79-somewhere in the 90's) over a clown liike him anytime.

  • I'm a 80's baby and I knew there was a good "feeling" in this song (other than it being a great song), I'm from DC myself :)

  • i loved this group and the people who was in my life at this time

  • great times; young and no worries, just living life and enjoying very good music.

  • Shoutout to Larry Blackmon from Cameo on drums! Dope cut right here

  • @superdrum3 Yea Larry Blackmon is mad talented:)

  • @superdrum3 yep!....larry played with black ivory before his cameo days. larry was/is the man!

  • @superdrum3 Wow! Larry on Drums Fo Real? No Wonder It was So Dope!

    Thanks for the Info.

  • Anacostia in the house !!!

  • Anacostia in the house !!!

  • it was a big hit in d.c. back in the day! anacostia in the house!!

  • A true classic! Smokin'!

  • Wow, that was, something like, 40 years ago. I lived on Good Hope Road, at that time, across from the Anacostia library. Remeber that big chair on Nicololas Ave., near the 11th Street bridge. Smiles.

  • @MissPRich......you threw my memories in overdrive when you mentioned Nicholas Ave. I was still at Hart Jr. High at the time! Lived up from you at Nichols and So. Capital. Do you remember the shows at Lowes Palace? I recall seeing the Dells, OJays, Whatnots, and the Manhattans for $5.00! I probably saw you there sporting your sizzler and afro :). Anways...thanks for the memories.

  • Who da 2 dat press dislike.... Ya'll dont know real soulful music

  • these guys were so fine I forgot they could sing!!!

  • Beautiful!!

  • What's not to like? That is ole school like a big dog ala Stylistics,Intruders & Stylistics. Great arrangement!

  • @eracism09 Me too man, Me too:)

  • @eracism09 - although I love Q-tip and his music - even the ole skool rappers still have to borrow from the classics - word to the wise

  • @anacostia73 true

  • Nyrobii3 - that scene you described took place in cities all across this country. I grew up in Hempstead, NY and remember slow dragging off this tune with my high school heart throb. And yes, the clean, fresh smell of Afro Sheen was in the air. Yes, baby, take me back...take me back...to those good ole days!

  • These magical gems are still alive & well, as are the sentiments which we hold when we hear them.

Every spin of these tracks is a tribute to the music. Keep the soul alive y'all.

  • q tip

  • <3 faints <3

  • 343 people have more than great taste!

  • This song has Ol' School prom night written all over it.

  • I miss good looking men with big Afro's.

  • @chakafan2 Yes.

  • Great .. north kak sound.. will neva forget .. rip jane enoch..

  • This song was on the radio while I got my first french kiss in the early 70's ( NE Washington) with my first secret love Angie. Wow what a memory!

Those of you in my generation know what I'm saying, This was true music and will always bring back nothing but great memories. Thanks PalmBeach!!

  • This song was stuck in my head for the last few days, so glad to finally find out who this group is. Love it!!

  • 1972. Edmondson Senior High School, Baltimore, MD., Senior class.

  • There was alot of grinding going on with this song!

  • Early 70's, south side Chicago,Illinois Wendell Phillips and Paul Laurence High schools. Life was so simple then!

  • @alexk2501 Oh it's to see a fellow Chicagoan posted. I too attended Wendell Phillips and Dunbar High.Love Black Ivory and so many very talented artists of the early 70's. Attend many parties in the 6217 Calumet bldg

  • What's slow dragging? I have a thought of what it is. Being as though I was born in 86' and use to go to house parties but just wanted to know exactly.

  • this song made me sign up on youtube. times were so innocent in my life then. hats off to Black Ivory. This is old school and if vyou are not feeling it then this is not for you respectfully.

  • this song made me sign up on youtube. times were so innocent in my life then. hats off to Black Ivory

  • I want to hear a MIchael Jackson version of this song. That would be awesome

  • Oh My goodness, when house parties were house parties. Parents up stairs and we were down stairs dancing, slow dancing, fast dancing. Sometimes I close my eyes and I can remember the smell of the basement, the clothes we wore in the late 60's and early 70's, afro's. At school finding out who was giving the house party that Friday night or Saturday night, mostly Friday nights. Good fun, good times

  • It also doesn't hurt to be stoned out of your mind and listen to this

  • @ATeenCalledLame i just did bro :D

  • You have to have soul, rhythm and taste for the art of music in order to feel the love in this beauty

  • Comment removed

  • Yo, Q-tip's album sampled this joint. Its ill as s&%T. I thought they were sampling Tears For Fears at first.

    That isht be Gettin' Up!

  • @DontPAss2JOE Yeah that intro is a dead give away LOL I grew up on Black Ivory so hearing it in "Gettin Up" blew my mind =D

  • @Airiespow, That's how my People handled their business 2. Baseball bat security!! :D

  • i grew up in harlem 121st manhattan ave inthe early 70s. i remember seeing these guys on the corner of 122nd st st nicholas. i was so infatuated with stewart. we all go through that phase where we were fascinated with the light skin brother.. iw as no different. those were the basement and PAL club (123rd st) .. i still remember..

  • those were the good ole days. @ Nyrobil i could smell the afro sheen too. lol

  • Met them at The Fountain in Central Park one day playing hooky. Don't know if they were, only speaking for myself, of course. So young so cute...37 years ago-ssshhh:) It was very exciting.

  • OMG. <3 , LOVE THIS.

  • These was the Days!!!! More safe, more real everone cared, back then!!!!.

  • @glodot1 Rose tinted glasses.

  • Momma's red-light rent parties.BYOB!All you can eat(just leave some).Baseball bat security:Don't start none,won't be none!RIP Momma!

  • WOW, the REAL original, not the remixed version with a drum track that sounds very muddled, and Leroy Burgess' voice is very clear, unlike the widely distributed version. I had this version as a kid until 1976 and couldnt find it anywhere since, when i bought the album again it had the remixed version. Patrick Adams is one fabulous producer, I love all his work ( i mean all).

  • I was a yungin when my pops would crank this song back in the day,and ny uncles would play this at there Uptown (Upper Nw) DC house parties, this song is vicious,I see why Q-Tip sampled this song on Gettin Up!

  • I LOVE THIS SONG

  • damn, another great r&b nugget from disco producer Patrick Adams, damn he did so much stuff

  • I got turned on to Black Ivory back in '93 when listenin to "The Love Affair" radio show in Southern Cali, hosted by Kevin "Slow Jammin James".

I would call up and ask . "who sung this....that?"

Groups like B.I. , Soul Generation, Jimmy Brisco and Special Delivery , came to me 20-somthin years after their popularity, but hold a special place to me in the old school soul genre.

Love this version, it's an alternate rendition from the one on Don't Turn Around compilation.

  • i used to sit in the dark and just jam these tunes back in the days!

    thinking about that special girl.

    check out "don't turn around"

  • Not gonna lie, but QTip brought me here.

  • Damn this is a cold ass song! I wish R&B was this good now.

  • I always wondered if any like celebrities were fans of Black Ivory. Does anybody know?

  • @86pimp3 Just discovered this group and I love thier sound and voices. From my brief research, their music has neen covered by several artists over the years. So I guess they were well appreciated by others. You normally find that an artist who fails to get much fame and fortune, ended up being the fan-favorite of many stars; it's like we're the stars of the public, BUT we need our own stars too, and that is found in underrated acts like Black Ivory.

  • Thank you ! Besty, From Teddi

  • This song & I go waaaaaaaay back to 1971.....I was madly in love with a younglady by the name of Trudy...from Oscoda MI....she was my heart & soul....my...."World".... unfortunately our Love came to an ending that still hurts to this day...I will never forget her as long as I live....Trudy where ever you are....I still "LOVE" U....will never 4get U :-)

  • I've lost my mind completely. After I type this I am going to jump up and just start spinning around in my room because I haven't heard this song in decades and it is making me do that.

  • I love 70's slow jams the best. Nothing can't beat them.

  • Nyrobi3 I remember those days in SE DC over on Valley Avenue and 3rd st. This Music is always going to be classic golden oldies....

  • OMG is correct! When I was 14 I would listen to this song over and over. After hearing it again, I know why ! It's like being 14 all over again. B E A U T I F U L !

  • This is for u IKEY, R.I.P., u and I had an understanding.!!!!!!!!!!! Thank u for my dede bird. GREAT SONG, I brought this LP, it was, is, and will be the shi-!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • this is all that. sing that song !

  • Blue lights at a basement party in SE Washington. That's when MLK Ave. was still Nicholas Ave. I could smell the Afro Sheen in her hair and as we slow dragged in a corner. Boy....the memories music can bring.
