I think I have to donate to a dog shelter in order to stop crying. Btw I remember this song being played on MTV, I wonder if there is any such stuff left now.
The only problem I have with science is that some organizations or groups that do experiments don't have any regard for human and/or animal life. Taking away genetic material from indigenous groups without full explanation is stealing, and sending a dog up into space that you know is going to die is murder.
@lotusflower281 Lets think for a second. You kill a pig (Arguably smarter in some ways then a dog) to eat it, and nobody cares. But you kill a dog to advance technology in a way that was unheard of before, and everyone flips bitches. This dog was the first living being into space, as far as we know.
@brainslurper Well, the first difference is you're assuming that normal people are very rational; obviously, cultural and societal conditioning causes us to sympathize/empathize more with dogs as opposed to pigs.
Secondly, meat is much more integrated into our lives. In contrast, killing for knowledge is seen as overindulgence, again, irrationally. (Since, of course, veganism is a viable alternative; there are no robust alternatives to experiments)
@GeekProdigyGuy Regardless of the circumstances, this dog did far more then any non human ever has. Also, while you CAN be a vegan, it is more healthy to have some meat.
@brainslurper I thought you were arguing that people were overreacting to the supposed "immorality" of killing the dog due to a relatively irrational measure of "worth"? I agree -- no sentient being deserves pain more or less than any other, without having caused or alleviated any in others. Plus, the dog didn't "do" anything -- any dog would've sufficed.
And when I say veganism is viable, I meant to imply that it can be (approximately) as healthy as any self-conscious meat-consumption.
@GeekProdigyGuy I would certainly kill an ant faster then I would kill an ape, because the ape is more intelligent, and has more capacity to understand what is happening. Someone who eats meat as humans were meant to (Non processed, coming from animals that actually move in their live) is generally better off then a vegan, but someone who eats fast food hamburgers for their meat is going to die when they are 60. I don't eat dairy products- they are really gross when you think about it.
@brainslurper True but dogs are valued lovingly as pets more than pigs in our society. I honestly think you're going a little off track here. It doesn't change the fact that what they did to Laika was unethical and it doesn't change the fact that killing a pig for food is unethical as well.
@lotusflower281 The only reason I don't eat pigs is because they are very fattening, and the reason I don't eat dogs is because they taste bad. We are omnivorous. We are meant to eat animals. Our oldest relatives ate nothing but ants for protein. And ants taste like shit.
@brainslurper We are omnivores? Please. Do some research before you claim that old myths are true. Meat is in no way good for us. It breaks the body down. Why do you think colon cancer and other forms of cancer is much more common in meat eating humans than in humans that have excluded meat from their diet? Our teeth are made for vegetables (no, the pointy teeth are not carnivore teeth). When we chew we have grinding motion. Carnivores jaws can only go up and down, not back and forth like ours.
@GothClassics Okay, if you want to do that. Just because our digestive system is capable of handling vegetables (Longer decay period) doesn't mean it isn't designed for meat as well. Look at our faces. Prey have eyes on the sides of their head, while predators have eyes on the front, we are definitely hunters. Our teeth are also perfectly capable of breaking down meat, as they have shown for millions of years.
@GothClassics I think the problem is that for the most part the meat we eat comes from animals that don't move their entire lives. The only meat that I eat is tuna and good steak, and the rest of what I eat is fruits and vegetables, which are rarely cooked.
@brainslurper True but dogs are valued lovingly as pets more than pigs in our society. I honestly think you're going a little off track here. It doesn't change the fact that what they did to Laika was unethical and it doesn't change the fact that killing a pig for food is unethical as well.
@lotusflower281 Yes, but science provides you with everything you've ever purchased. If you want to argue about inhumane acts, look first to genocide, discrimination, poverty, (even meat eating) etc. Many human facilitated actions are much worse than a small number of animal deaths and debatable genetic "stealing", and provide FAR less appreciable value to the human race. Until all those issues are solved, minor criticism of scientific ethics is an irrelevant luxury.
then all of a sudden, a light from earth appears and Superman flyes up and brings Laika back to earth, sets her free and shoves the space shuttle up the russians asses
I finally found this song! When i was younger i always listened to this song on the television and cried and i'am a guy :( I could never live with out a dog.
It's so awful thet they was sending away a dog :( and that the spaceship was not designed to come back to earth .. i mean just think about how scary it must have been for the dog not knowing what was happening.
I would rather had send away a human who knew what was happening!!!!!!

Laika was found as a stray wandering the streets of Moscow. Soviet scientists chose to use Moscow strays since they assumed that such animals had already learned to endure conditions of extreme cold and hunger.Laika was a Soviet space dog that became the first animal to orbit the Earth aswell as the first animal to die in orbit.Laika likely died within hours after launch from overheating
Before the launch, one of the scientists Dr.Vladimir Yazdovsky took Laika home to play with his children.
I remember seeing this video when i was younger. After i saw it the first time i avoided seeing it again since it made me feel so bad. I never forgot about it though and have been searching for ages and Finally! i found it and now i'm crying like a baby..

@Nnemicvids Well dude I just watched another video and the comments said "this is the best song of all time" it's confusing for me to know, srlsy which song is the best of all time for real?
this makes me cry so fucking hard. Based on a true story for those of you who don't know. Laika was the first animal in space, before any humans. The spaceship was not designed to come back to earth and she died in space, probably due to overheating issues.
Sputnik 2, it turned out, was something of a rush job. The whole thing had been planned and put together in four weeks, so no one should have been surprised when the thermal insulation system broke right away. Poor Laika, whose little doggy heart was already beating at four times its resting rate, found herself in a cabin that was 104 degrees Fahrenheit. Her body shut down from stress and heat within five to seven hours of her launch.
Oh, trust me, I know how *that* feels. I'm a hopeless romantic, so I end up feeling like I have really strong chest pains every time a couple I enjoy in a book, movie, TV show or musical doesn't end up together.
@ParadiseOskar Aye, and sending a dog into space is still a comparatively noble goal when you consider all the animals who get killed for fun or because we like to wear their furs.
@SolitaireShin Yeah, but it's still heartbreaking - I mean I learned about Laika in school when I was about 8 years old, and no one bothered to tell us that she didn't make it back, this video was actually a history lesson for me, combined with the song it was a pretty potent emotional cocktail.
@m3rrys0ngstr3ss Yeah, I mean, I certainly don't agree with what was done to Laika; ideally that dubious honour should have gone to a human. But one should also keep in mind that while this was a sad singular case, there are a lot of animals going through a lot worse, for a lot less worthy causes.
