  • more of an Age of Empire 2 clone IMO, without the frame-based barrack glitches if you know what I mean

  • This shit is awful, but intriguing

  • 4:17 that death scream is just amazing.

  • how come the mushroom didnt do anything?

  • @evildead818 The character doesn't grow in size but the mushroom does give him an extra hit

  • wow, look how fast the timer goes

  • weeena 133 aki el chalo y el atarox, FEA LA WEA!!!!

  • i like the sound when you complete one course

  • were did you get this game

  • I love the dying sound. UGH!!!

  • The music is kinda...strange....you know....

  • @Themaniacnextdoor Classical music?

  • @133MHzz Yeah, it feels so out of place in an Atari game

  • Dude. I died laughing at the sound he makes when he falls.

  • atari is noob they will never be so awesome like nintendo

  • @ichigo01923 Without Atari there would be no Nintendo.

  • Epic.

  • wait wait you have to be fucking kidding me.... bowser is replaced with the exact same enemy with the same enemy threwout the entire game and then the muchroom retainer is also replaced with the SAME enemy!? and his says BROTHER instead of PRINCESS? did atari ever play super mario??

  • @38supernova

What's wrong with you?? Why do you keep noting differences and asking if "Atari" ever played Super Mario? Who is "Atari"?! This was a 3rd party release for the Atari systems, by a company without the rights to Super Mario. Don't you understand what "clone" means?

  • @datacipher

    0_____0

woah dude, calm down. im allowed my opinion and im also allowed to think that atari made this. so what if im wrong, mind your own business. if you have a different opinion thats fine but dont be a dick about it.

  • seriously? the flag pole is a fucking pipe? and the only enemy is a spiny witch looks like it has tentacles instead of spikes? what the fuck was atari smoking.

  • We must tell AVGN about this

  • Atari being a complete bunch of copycat dickheads thinking that they can get more popular that Nintendo.

  • The original SMB was 8-bit too, except it didn't suck.

  • JERSEY SHORE. THE VIDEOGAME.

  • Bros before Hoes

  • Whats up with Bach's Anna Magdalana Notebook in the background?

  • BROS

  • @Dar3dmag3 THE BEST GAME TITLE.

  • This game looks terrible and the sounds bros dude make when he hits something is terribly annoying.

  • the best part to me is at 7:12 when I finally saw the Game Over screen and knew my torture is over XD

  • I lol'd at 3:04 XD

  • 4:19 rofl. I love the damage sounds in old games

  • Oh my god! Thats such a bad ripoff from Minecraft XD

  • This is a giana sisters graphical hack

  • awesome crap! the only thing I like in this game is mario's scream of death :)

  • i love the music :)

  • I love the classical music remix!

  • "Ugh" lol

  • Sorry mario but your princess is in another game.

  • TOAD:Sorry Mario But that bitch is in another castle. Remember ness?

  • Sorry but I think I'll stick with the original Super Mario Bros. for the NES.

  • I'm a little rusty, but I think I can still play that song on the violin.

  • Come on, I can't be the only one that laughs at the sound when the time is going down when you clear a stage.

  • Dis Could be a meme

  • THAT does not look like Mario. He looks like Andy Capp.

  • Man... this is AWFUL :D

  • Kinda looks like Super Mario Land.

  • 19 ppl has their brother in another castle

  • I feel this is trying to copy something, but I just can't put my finger on it...

  • cool!

  • gotta love that "time bonus points being added" sound.

  • Cool, starting out on Level 11 is always a bonus.

  • You know, this game looks like someone's really vauge recollection of Super Mario Bros.

"You were this dude that jumped around and ate mushrooms...You got this thing to throw at people...You went through these castles to save someone...and you had to jump on spiny things, walking things, and flying things..."

  • Why does Mario fart everytime he stomps on a enemy?

  • Jeepers cripes. This game looks TERRIBLE!

  • "verly large"

  • The music MUST be made by Koji Kondo!

  • Yes, they could had done better, even on Atari hardware.

  • no warp zone ?

  • Yeah now you can see how much better is smb on nes and nes is 8bit too has a 1.79mhz processor, but colors and everything is much better. Good example how faster must be computer to run same game like nes does

  • I actually wanna try it!

  • That sound is freaky

  • check this out watch v=pAjvlSCf7CE / Crownland / 8 bit atari game from 2007 .. why nobody made it 25 years ago? :)

  • At that time it was my job, I ran a company called KE-SOFT, producing games and a magazine for Atari 8-Bit. You can read about it at my website gulpsplatzong, that's a book I recently published. An english version wil be available soon.

  • @kemalzhang Interesting, should've been hard, Nintendo had a whole team and you were by your own trying to reproduce a software into an older hardware. Yo'ure Mr. Patience.

  • good thing I played this before HOES

  • @knockout08 Dohohoho

  • those physics really sucks haha lol, but that digitized voice when you die is amezing for first 8bit standards,it would,ve been cool if nintendo had also used digitized samples in their fierst smb game.

  • Those poorly digitized grunting and chomping sounds are so adorable.

  • my parents would have gotten me this game for christmas when everyone else had the real thing :(

  • haha the music is so unoriginal

  • *brofist*

  • Fun Fact: in terms of gameplay, BROS shares a lot of similarities with the original designs for Super Mario Bros. Originally, the fireballs were straight-shooting bullets, which were fired with the A button, and the Up Arrow was the button that made Mario jump. Judging from how well these controls work in BROS, I think we should all be glad they changed SMB before release.

  • that colors used to make me sleeeeep

  • The sounds and graphics give me a headache!

  • would have been sweet to play this on the 7800

  • man, time passes by so fast in this game!

  • Wow! is this for xBox?

  • I like the music

  • *Hits brick* "Ugh!"

    *Goes in pipe* "Booooooooooooooooooooiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiip!"

  • @Wolfcat22 That pipe sound just made this video for me XD

  • I see no blame for this. This was done in Basic. Many other games do less and mean to be programmed in Assembler. Listening to the digi sounds makes it clear, you had to play the game with fun :)

  • So not a rip off of Mario:P TVTopes.

  • AVGN should review this.

  • That disk-loading sound is awesome!

  • and when he stomps on

    "goombas" they fart!

  • This made me lol!

    i was expecting that lil'

    guy to grow bigger

    when he eats the mushroom

    but instead, he just

    kmakes a munching noise!

  • this definately blows monkey chunx

  • AVGN should review this game!

  • 3:05 lol I would have just said "It's impossible" and kicked away the goddamn game

  • This is one of the most shameless rip-offs I've ever seen in my life.

  • I really like the music in this game (especially the title screen).

  • Whoever made this is now the fabricator of Satanic Floppies.

  • SORRY BUT YOUR BROTHER IS IN ANOTHER CASTLE.

    *Facepalm*

  • @TheDoremi40 The princess must be who you play 2 player with? or maybe bowser is the person you play with and the princess is the boss?

  • BROS.

  • that sounds like minuet in g major, i like the real mario music better

  • Wow it's a pretty obvious rip off. Love the "ugh" death sound effect though!

  • Ninja Mario can throw throwing stars!

  • crap at its finest.

  • This farting noise when hitting enemies is priceless XD

  • I think that Atari 800XL could make it much better. Why is there only five colors? Why Giana Sisters on C64 have more than five colors, and better sound? Both computers are equal. I can't understand that. There are few wery good games on Atari (f.e. Draconus which has much better music and grapchics), but usually on C64 they look bettter. I don't believe that depend on machine, but also on programmers which must put more work in it.

  • @NexussVI Indeed, this game was programmed in TurboBASIC and thus it looks bland and runs really slow.

  • @NexussVI because Atari can have only 4 colors PER SCANLINE (plus one-color sprites). But i wonder why it's made flip-screen. Even some Spectrum fan-made demo versions had smooth scrolling.

  • Hi! This game was programmed by me, former owner of KE-SOFT in Germany. It was programmed in Turbobasic. The delay when hitting something comes from the digitized sound that interrupts the program-flow when playing, there's no other way to do it. The Atari has 128 colors, however can display only 5 at the same time. The C-64 has only 16 colors but can display all of them at the same time. In fact, this was the only smb clone for the Atari 8-bit and for that, it was quite a good game.

  • @kemalzhang Still looks better than most open-source clones ;)

  • @kemalzhang Did you do it as a hobbie, as a challenge or as a job?

  • @kemalzhang

Thank you for sharing that. You did a decent job on the game. I didn't own this system, but it looks pretty good to me. I had the C64, myself.

  • I think you're telling the truth. Did it take you long to program this game? It doesn't look like it did. I'm not trying to insult you, I'm just curious.

  • @kemalzhang thank you for your fine work on this game. it has been consistently been putting a smile on my face throughout the few short years it has been since i discovered it.

  • @kemalzhang How can we be sure you made it?

  • @kemalzhang; this is pretty respectable for something written in compiled BASIC, and better than any rubbish I ever wrote for the Atari 800.

However... it's certainly *not* representative of the machine's full capabilities and it's misleading if that's what you were implying. (continues...)

  • @kemalzhang (continued); It *could* do more than 5 colours on-screen at once- in fact it could have up to 256! It's just that there were restrictions. And chip-generated (non-digitised) sounds didn't normally slow things down.

It was also capable of higher resolutions (often mixed), hardware scrolling, and hardware sprites. Flexibility in how you could use these often made it more powerful than it might have appeared on paper. Lots of this required machine code to do- but it *was* possible.

  • @NexussVI Here are some good-to-excelllent games for the atari800(1979), 800xl and 1200xl: ballblazer, donkey kong, montezumas revenge, frogger, rescue on fractalus, miner 2049er, galaxian, mario brothers, crystal castles, M.U.L.E., asteroids, karateka, and lode runner.

  • @lutzdify Yeah, these games are awesome! I played most of them. Thanks for Your suggestion. Also in that list there must be: Twilight World - greatest platform game only for 8-bit atari, and some very good polish productions: Robbo - Boulder Dash clone, Fred - great game, great music, Miecze Valdgira - platform-adventure, and Klątwa (The Curse) - point-click adventure. Thanks again.

  • LOVE the J S Bach music!!! I remember several of my Atari 800 games had groovy Bach music. Long Live Atari 8-bit!!!

  • BROS

  • It would certainly be rather interesting to send this to James Rolfe :D

  • That "UNGH!" death sound is really hilarious to me. x3

  • The select button switches between 2 character modes, known among Atari XL programmers as Graphics 12 and 13. These are multicolor character modes, with the sole difference that the pixel size is double height in graphics 13 (default mode when booting bros). This was a pretty easy thing to put in the game, since the only change needed was to activate a different display list, which is a small "program" for the ANTIC chip that tells it what to show on screen on a line-by-line basis.

  • @133MHzz Bit odd to reply on a year old comment, but this was officially released as a kind of bonus game along with the game TOBOT. Both written by KE-SOFT in november 1989. The disks were labeled as TOBOT/BROS. If you want more info, do a search for "Kemals Atari Archiv" and you'll find his website where you can even download this, and more. It is in german though.

  • youtube arguments are useless, much like the people who engage in them =]

  • I laughed when I heard the digitized "UNGH" death sound.

  • CHEAP OBVIOUS 4CHAN MEME REFERENCE

    amidoinitrite?

  • @Lioyd1rving Yes, you are...

  • @ihatemydeath Yay, I'm witty and popular! Uh...

    WOMEN BELONG IN THE KITCHEN

Now aren't I clever and original?

  • @Lioyd1rving No, you're not anymore.

  • @ihatemydeath WAIT WAIT WAIT WAIT! Uhhh...

BLACK PEOPLE ARE SUBHUMAN! ALL FAT PEOPLE ARE THE SAME PERSON!

There, am I witty again? D:

  • @Lioyd1rving *Yawn*

...Oh, sorry about that, I must have fallen asleep for the last hour or more. And you weren't even witty when you started. ಠ_ಠ

  • @ihatemydeath Moral of the story: Simply throwing shit around is not inherently funny, witty or clever. Take note, meme kiddies!

  • @Lioyd1rving But it is funny (sometimes). It's just not clever, original or witty.

  • @ihatemydeath And it's snarky and ironic. Like a hipster. No one wants to be a hipster. :3

  • @Lioyd1rving Unfortunately, there's no single, standardized definition for the social class "hipster". So, of course, everyone on the internet has turned the word into an accusatory epithet. And that's terrible. D:

But srsly folks, can any of you claim to have absolutely no hipster-like tendencies? "Let he who is without sin cast the first stone", as Jesus once said, if he ever existed.

  • rare graphics on atari...

  • this is major suck

  • Don't understand why Atari 800 couldnt produce the same graphics as NES? Think they're both 8 bit systems. However, NES may have more sprites. Got any specs to compare the two?

  • @justin76pa What does "8-bit" mean to you, and what parameter in any system specification would you use to describe "how many bits" it has? Numbers like these can never tell the full capabilities of any system, so it has never made much sense using them to compare whole systems to eachother, which is apparent from video clips like this among other.

  • @RJLeffmann You must be having a bad day, huh? Go get some sun, think you need some vitamin D.

  • @justin76pa Not at all, and you don't have to be sensitive and think I was trying to call you out like an ignorant or uninformed person, it wasn't at all meant like that.

  • @RJLeffmann Take care my friend.

  • So you crack your skull every time you get a coin, fart when you kill an enemy, and have a painful orgasm when you die..... GOTY

And such an massive game, I bet its like an enormous 8KB, man!

  • Comment removed

  • the pipe graphic in 1-1 is identical to the mario bros (NES) graphic

  • I would feel so LAME being the guy who made that copycat.

Imagine now the kid who receive THIS for christmas instead of SMB in 1985

  • UHH! 2:58

That was so funny i couldn't let out my laughter I was like "HAAAARRRR...UGHHH...HAAAAAAAAAAHHHHH!!!"

  • why wouldnt you just edit the video and cut out the load time?? lol

  • This game is INSANE!

    Got NO BRAIN!

This game is INSANE in the MEMBRANE!

  • wow, the death "uugh" sound is quite convincing for an old machine like that. :p Ripping things in half in gears of war is fun, but noone will ever experience again how it was to turn on your very first atari. Ahhh good times.

  • i loved the atari 8-bits to death. but this would give people the wrong idea about how great these things were. just look at the comments bashing atari probably just because this is the only atari 8-bit vid they have seen. :\

  • you know you could edit the loading out of the movie

  • Like the sound, when Bro dies

  • atari ruins every good game

  • UUNH!

Christ this looks awful. I saw you trying to jump over the pipe at the end, and when control is bad, it usually just looks like the player is doing a bad job. Not this game! It looks genuinely hard!

  • 4:47-4:56 ITS GONA BlOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE i swear if i hear that again!

  • I love how when Mario eats the mushroom all you hear is a "CHOMP!" noise.

  • *Mario plays video*

Mario: Mamma Mia, What is this I dont even...

  • HYPERGUY BRO

  • UHHHNF

  • This game is called Jumpman.

  • Hahahaha BROS

  • BROFIST YO!

  • This game like Gianna sister for DOS : D

    Amazing video!

  • Looks rather bad overall. Why no smooth HW scrolling - the only strong thing on Atari 800 besides the choice of plenty of colours avoiding those washed out C-64/Coleco palletes. Definitely not even touching Giana Sisters on C-64, no chance.

  • looks like a hack of Giana Sisters, which is a rip off of Mario. Ironic.

  • I hate to admit it, but that's some pretty kickass music.

  • Minuet in G as the music? Rofl

  • Wow, nice attempt of a mario clone. But yeah, the atari is kinda limited so you gotta give a thumbs up to these developers.

  • This is probably the least fitting music possible, even if it isn't Mario.

  • No warp zone?

  • Why not start the video after it has loaded up from the disk? Wouldn't that make a lot more sense? You're not a girl, are you?

  • @omenroc1 i'm glad he didnt. also, we seem to share a lot.

  • I want this rom NOW

  • If Mario was a BRO, he'd be throwing ninja stars too.

  • wow

  • BROS BEFORE HOES

  • the music is minuet well a bad 8 bit version of it

  • this is almost funny

  • Omg! The sounds, this is so bad! But I still kind of want it since I have two atari computers

  • WOW that's a fast moving clock!!!

  • I prefer this version simply because "Mario" aquires a rocket launcher.

  • @The1Camshaft IF O
