  • One of my favorte Lennon tunes. That dark, haunting walkdown chord progression...

  • If only he hadn't gone to the US ..apparently they had him under surveillance the minute he got there. ..Nutters.

  • Thanks for uploading this. I remember buying the album in 1974. Looking back, I think 1974 - 1975 were the greatest years for music. Certainly my favorite years. 8O) Added to the worldunitedmusicDOTblogspotDOTcom website.

  • The chorus sounds a little bit like How Do You Sleep.

  • stealing glass, still ingles :D

  • Only a great artist will open his heart like this, with no shame, no bounds, just his soul crying out aloud for the whole world to feel his pain.

And thanks to the poster for including sound and relevant information on the song.

  • i MISS John...He was the best man of all the time... Alice from Rome-

  • Was this written in NYC or back in LA?... (Saw the PBS "American Masters" program the other night...must be the best documentary of his last years... even if the "Am. Master" label is a stretch.) Walls & Bridges / Steel & Glass seems to imply a comparison/ contrast of some kind.

  • best

  • This song is not about a person, it's about the USA.

  • I love John. SO MUCH! but this is just cruel.

  • Je je je This is the story 'bout young friend mine ¿Who is it, who is it?

  • Supremely talented - maybe - supremely original - maybe - supremely human - yes

  • who was Allen Klein?

  • @madbrad812345 allen Klein was the beatles manager during the last years of the band and with his financial desicions made the beatles lose funding. allan klein was also the biggest asshole you could think of.

  • @scarface12347 ah i think i have heard of him, took a shit load of there money and was a reason for the breakup

  • @madbrad812345 you might of

  • @scarface12347 have

  • @JohnnyMidgey i made a mistake get over it.

  • The Allen Klein thing has always been wrong; the song was OBVIOUSLY about Lennon himself. "How Do You Sleep" was directed at McCartney, this was a clear remake with Lennon (perhaps feeling a little guilty at his previous viciousness) putting himself in Paul's place, during a time when he was at a low ebb and feeling like a loser.. "This here's a story about your friend and mine (who is it? who is it?)" And all these years later people STILL have it wrong!

  • the one dislike is from Allen Klein

  • Lennon genio.....

Que falta faz a sua poesia , sua musica , sua postura politica e humana.

Sua ausencia deixa o mundo pior.

Sua presença o faria melhor ....

  • What other hate sonsg does John have other than this and How do you sleep? I can't really think of any...

  • i dont wanna be a soldier?? i found out??? sound like imagine and plastic ono band but i like it

  • This is a direct hit at Allen Klein. In 1973 John, George and Ringo discovered that Klein was keeping revenues that were due them. So they fired him and the lawsuits started.

  • This song is in fact directed at Allen Klein. One thing as someone mentioned is that John said something about Klein's mother.I believe that he didn't have to go that way, that deep.Great song but that is my only complaint. And please don't say that John ran out of material because he used same chorus as"How do you sleep".He came up with it so he can do whatever he wants with it...Enes

  • parts of this song sounds like 'How Do You Sleep' because Allan Klein put Lennon up to making how do you sleep....

  • I love Johns 'Hate' songs...

  • @MrAndrewjs John needed passion to write his best. Hate is , of course, a passion. This song is point blank at Allen Klein, a man of whom John fought for in place of Paul"s Father-in-Law to manage the Beatles financial affairs. It's quite ironic that what caused a rift between John & Paul, in the end caused a bigger rift between All the Beatles & Klein. Walls & Bridges is a great album. The passion was there, and John delivered as only John could. I too love John"s "Hate Songs".

  • needle and gun. maybe it`s that simple. anyway, one of the greatest songs ever

  • great song about Alan Klein

  • I think this is pretty similar to his other "hate song" i.e. "How do you sleep"

  • @aaaiiiyyy that's right!

  • The tune is a parody of George's song "Blow Away" - also listen to the lyrics.

All you've got to do is to say this little word/I know it sounds absurd buts it's true/the magic of the mantra will give you all the answers/just swallow this that's all you gotta do ...

This sounds to me like a barbed ataack on both George's music and his world view. Lennon had clearly moved on from the view that "the magic of the mantra will give you all the answers" by this time. That's my theory anyway.

  • WHAT DEEP THOUGHTS AND THE MUSIC IS JUST OUT OF SPACE... STRONG AND HITS ...

WAY BACK I LISTEN TO THIS SONG OVER-AND-OVER AND FELT SO CLOSE TO IT. I COULDN'T PULL STRINGS COUSE MY HANDS WERE TIRED....HMMMM

    MAGIC SONG FROM LENNON ,-)

    GOOD SOUND HERE TKS.... 5STARS

  • like how do you sleep, another one about Faul the imposter

  • good stuff

  • Carmichael...Just because he has the same chorus as one of his other songs makes him a washed out musicians.I want to see you write so many songs and not use something similar.12 bar blues has been repeated a million times but you aren't dissing them.I, IV, V progression.Lennon really had it in for Allen. It's the words...

  • @enessx1 and incmob good defenses but unnecessary because it was 100% on purpose that John made the song from "how do you sleep" it was intended to be a musical sequel to it.

  • Your mouthpiece squaks, as you spread your lies, but you can't pull strings, if your hands are ti-i-i-i-i-e-e-e-d, hey, hey he-e-e-e-e-y.....................Well your teeth are clean, but your mind is capped, you leave your smell, like an alley, ca-a-a-a-a-a-t......Steel and Glass...............................Words very craftily put together, great melody and vocals unequaled in music today or yesterday. I believe this is Lennon at his best, better than Jealous Guy or Woman.

  • I think this album collection is the most heartfelt of his work...he was expressing something he had held in for so long.

  • Come on fellas' let's be honest john's inspiration was truly running out look how he rips off the main riff from "how do you sleep" imagine 1971

  • @carmichael2411 Be honest?? okay lets be honest... they borrowed the bass line... not a big deal, considering that he took 6 years off and came back with double fantasy that suprisingly sounded nothing like anything he had done before, and it was a great album. Its fine to recognize the bass line but it is ridiculous to say he ran out of ideas, on top of that he other musicians contributing so it might not have been all his doing...

  • @carmichael2411 It was done on purpose to symbolize that it was another attack on a person like "how do you sleep" was on Paul

  • creo que lennon habla de el proceso que lleva este en su industrialización y lo que causan cuando son explotados al máximo sus materias primas

  • Happy 70th, John!

Listening to this one as a tribute. :) RIP buddy.

  • Lennon had form as far as writing "attack" songs about other people go. Sexy Sadie (Maharishi); How Do You Sleep (Paul); Serve Yourself (Dylan); The Rishikesh Song (George) - not sure who this is aimed at though .... Could be Klein.

  • @Oforgoodnessache

My guess from the title is that the song is aimed at modern architects :-) (Probably not, but it should be)

  • @Oforgoodnessache

How is The Happy Rishikesh Song an attack on George? Just curious.

  • CAPOLAVORO

  • surely that he's talking 'bout himself.

  • Brilliant - RIP John !

  • John Lennon, you were been shot outside the Dakota Building (New York) in 1980, but newer ever forgotten by your fans

  • @aPpLeJuIcE37RainLucy I heard how do you sleep, never this though. How do you sleep is fucked up. The closer the friends the harsher they can hurt each other.

  • "You're mother left you when you were small." Is he talking about himself or Paul? If paul then John was using some fierce words back then.

  • @bilbomarks He's said in other interviews that the subject of both this and "How do you sleep" is himself.

  • @stillspooky In John's retrospective view he may have rationalized some sort of subconscious self attack, but I think "The only thing you done was yesterday" is pretty clear and clever, I must say.

  • @bilbomarks I always thought it was about Paul, other folks think it's about Allan Klein. John states it very clearly at the end of a video of "How do you sleep" put up by ralel0404, It doesn't matter what we think.

  • alin klien

  • Yeah that vicekid has some stupid comments all over the tube!!

  • sorry. i love working class hero. so much. i think awesome is the right word?

  • my favorite song from john after the beatles, with ímage and how do you sleep

  • Genius ! :X:X:X <333

  • this song reminds me of John's "How do you Sleep."

  • yes...on imagine he was kidding about paul, and in this one i think he was talking about himself... twin souls, twin songs...maybe...

  • no he wasnt joking about paul theres no way he could be joking when he calls him a cunt in how do you sleep so im pretty sure he wasnt kidding and its called how do you sleep

  • He was talkin about Phil Spector

  • @4mingus No about Paul!

  • @viceisthename I'm not talking about your irrelevant feelings or mental delusions, it's a fact: from John's own words this is about Phil Spector. When this song was written John and Paul relationship was quite amiable.

  • He called it ''the son of 'How Do You Sleep''

  • This is one of my favorite John songs of all time!

  • ahh you beat me to the punch lol

  • He said in an interview that the songs were very similar. I think it's even on the "How Do You Sleep" video on youtube. Check it out =]

  • The Alberta Cross cover of this is amazing. Check it out, you can find it on their myspace. Lol, this looks like an advertisement for Alberta Cross. Yeahhhh, just someone who feels they deserve to get further than they have.

  • I wonder if he intentionally wrote the chorus to this similar to 'How Do You Sleep'? Because the chorus definately reminds me of it

  • Estaria de 10 ke lo pusieras con subtitulos en español

  • Yes, that's the one, the majority of his songs are autobiographical!

  • I heard that this song was about Allen Klein. Is it true?

  • It's about Lennon himself, watch his Old Grey Whistle test interview for his own admission!

  • "Though I walk in the shadow of the valley of evil, I have no fear, as I am the biggest bastard in the valley." Allen Klein (The man this song is aimed at). The line where John Lennon has a go at the fact that Allen's mum died at Child birth is below the belt!

  • @charminggent77 John's mother abandoned him, the song is about John.

  • @charminggent77 Well, I'm not condoning it but John did to lose his mother to

  • @charminggent77 You know what? Lennon yelled at himself in song(he admits in several interviews) and this one is no different; This song is recorded during his lost weekend (9 mos) separation from Yoko in LA. .....listen to the words... "There you stand with your LA tan, your New York walk" "You were separated from your mom when you were young" .. Think about it ..... Stems from his earlier practice of primal scream therapy .... Despite what wikipedia says ....

  • @galileo1957 Absolutely.

  • @galileo1957 I've heard him say in an interview that he realized that this song was about himself after all. I always thought it was, before i knew that it was supposedly about Allen Klein.

  • @charminggent77 I think if a person wants to walk around like tough shit they should be able to listen to the birds sing;what-ever it is in their own lives that made them like that in the first place. His mum died at child birth that has had a tendency to make people feel bitter, mean and useless!Which is why more than half the world has issues with moving the fuck on we're all stuck in the past, using our dreadful memory to seduce everyone into feeling like a doll-delicate and fake.

  • @charminggent77 It should be everyone's life goal to beat what was planted with them a long time ago especially if you don't like it. Be strong and learn to work with yourself and the rest of the world will come!!!!

  • @charminggent77

Oh thats who its about???? I thought maybe it was about himself

  • The man this song was aimed at died today (July 4th, 2009).

  • I'm glad AK's dead, and I say 'good riddance.' Lying, thieving skumbag he was.

  • This song gives me chills. You can totally feel his disgust.

  • Another Lennon's masterpiece.

  • I love his voice in this one!! Another great song by John Lennon just like all his others

  • Thats a great song. ^^ as all of his are.

    thanks for sharing!

  • Excellent.

  • amazing song!
