  • this is great man, you should make bitches brew music where you solo like this!

  • This is pretty cool. It's just multiphonics mixed with plunger muting, but it sounds like one of those weird 30 second songs on a TooL album.

  • YAE YAE YAEEEEEEEEEEE YAE

  • the first sounds sound like louis armstrong's voice...i like that

  • epic

  • BARNEY IS DIEING HELP HIM!!

  • @angel171979 lolololol

  • Listen to my calm trombone improvisation. :)

  • using his voice as he plays. you can "play" two notes at the same time. with your lips, and with your voice box. But man, this guy is pro....

  • Les champignons étaient magiques!!!

  • Yahieee Yahieeee!!

  • Sounds like Louie Armstrong! lol ;-)

  • feels like being in the japan butha temple

  • fun!

  • jajajjajaj jaaaaaaaaaaaaaj

  • How do you "project the voice in front of the mouthpiece"? I play trumpet by the way.

  • how?!

  • (-:

  • how did u fit chewbacca in your trombone????? lolol

  • in my opinion its sounds very ugly xD

    but its hard anyway

  • What would you say is better for a jazz combo? My soloing has picked up momentum and opened up into unfamiliar tonal coloring. I'm looking at getting a shires or michael rath for my senior recital. Also the choice is relevant considering most of my repratoire is classical.

  • They are both great horns. Get the horn that feels the best, the horn that is the easiest to play etc,. If you plan to play jazz and classical on the same horn then I recommend a medium or medium large bore. Hope that helps..

  • @EdNeumeister Excellent tip on the bore size. I'll definately keep this in mind when I get quote estimates on both horns. Thank you.

  • You need to be singing real pitches while projecting the voice in front of the mouthpiece.

    Hope that helps.

    Ed

  • Hello, I'm a trombone player and part of a jazz combo group. How do you play with the voice in addition to the horn's actual sound? I've tried a few times, but the sound I get sounds like a guttural flutter tongue, I am not sure how to do it right. Any ideas?

    Thanks.

  • Hurray for multiphonics!

  • Sign me up!

  • Yes

  • where did you get your bone, man?

  • Bought the bell section used in 1978. It's a sterling silver "Silver Sonic" 3B. Had it gold plated later. The slide section is newer. I got it from King about 10 years ago.

  • @EdNeumeister nice. the 3b is definitely one of the best horns ever made. the 2b is good, but the bore is just too small to get a bigger sound out of it, that's why i like my 3b :D

  • @uthspawn12 thats what she said

  • @uthspawn12 thats what she said zing

  • isnt this flutter tounging?

  • Sometimes......

  • Ya ya ya...

Great representation of Tricky Sam Nanton.

  • wtf is he trying to fukin do

  • Sounds like R2D2 after a bad LSD jazz trip.

  • I admire you're playing very much. I am a beginning trombonist, having been playing for about seven years now. I aspire to use the trombone as artistically beautiful as you do. Keep posting these improvisations I know I am not the only one who learns a great deal from them

  • smoke and mirrors......

  • hahaha, dude how do you do that?!?

  • Comment removed

  • man i might learn a bit of trombone just to learn to do this, Trombonists are so goofy ^.^ this is prolly the best sound effect i've ever heard.on the trumpet i get cows, horses, turkeys, and a motorcycle. but this takes the cake.

  • @B0omtown I'm sure its really hard to play though O_O I've never gotten a sound out of my trombone like this...

  • BUENISIMO MUCHO ESTUDIO

  • interesting but semi annoying

  • lol tpains autotune for brass

  • sounds like louis armstrong singing ayayaaayy:D

  • hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahhaahhahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha

    hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahhahahahahahahahhahahhahahahahahhahahahha

    hahahahahahhahahahahhahahahhahahahhahahahaaahahhahaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

    que es eso

    es broma verdad

  • Love it!!!!

I am a new trombone player, any tips?

    I am not a kid.

  • that is pretty cool.

  • too bad it aint just muckin around

    that shit is hard

  • Sounds like a didgeridoo lol. Awesome.

  • q merda eh essa???

  • çà faisait longtemps que çà me démangé,cette fois je mis met

    EXELLENT !!!!!

  • how unusual, very unique, its pretty kool

the sound makes me feel like cleaning my throat :]

  • Wow. I really enjoyed this but I can see its not for everyone!

  • wth is this!

  • Comment removed

  • Unique and unusual, fine by me.

  • awful. disharmonious.

  • This is one of the greatest trombonist alive. Great musician. check out his material. He has several recordings and instructional videos.

  • i dont get it, is this warm up? watever dude...have fun.

  • i didnt like any of that at all

  • Is Chewbacca hiding somewhere?

  • Good call.

  • @radhazard888 nice 1 man yeah chewbacca has to be hiding some where

  • @radhazard888 They trapped Chewie inside a tube, that's fucking cruel!

  • i think he's doin something called polyphonics or somethin. where he plays a note then sings like another or in this case sounds like he's saying a word ya. then he uses the mute to make the ya ya ya more dynamic.

  • multiphonics

  • yea thats it. thanks

  • Kinda sounds like Louis Armstrong singing, doesn't it?

  • talented. creepy.

  • Não da pra ouvir praticamente nada.

  • It sounds like the trombone is saying "yaah yaah yaah yaaa yaaaaaaaaaaahhh" Funny but interesting.

  • omigawd creepy....haha

  • omg this guy played at my school

he came from ecu (east carolina university)

i still cant figure out how he does the voice thing

  • He is actually singing into the trombone while he plays the tones.

    My 2 cents

  • yay?

  • that is fuckin creepy as shit.

  • Agreed.

  • un mojon in spanish in english one mojon

  • Is this a cup mute??

  • no, its a plunger mute

  • oh!

    thank you!

  • It is a trumpet straight mute.

  • Comment removed

  • its called a plunger

  • You have effectively creeped me out! I am now going to buy myself a plunger so I can creep my sister out while she's asleep!

I'm a mean little sister XD

  • That's pretty sweet. I liked the effect you got when you hummed a major second above the not you were playing. had a neat natural beat pattern going.

  • sounds like the mating call of the great northern grizzled field ox. Other than that, it's cool as hell.

  • Sheesh!!! I need to learn how to do that!!!

  • Wow!! That's some crazy skill you have going for you!

  • Hmmm... :/

  • WTF????

    are you calling the demon??

  • lol thats funny

  • i'm trying to learn that too... built myself a didgeridoo, its easier to learn things with it, for example the voice or circular breathing, and its really difficult to do this with the trombone too, think hes a really very good player

  • i think you have to be able to do multiphonics in order to understand how hard whats hes doing really is

  • thats multiphonics to a whole new level! i kinda liked this!

  • this guy makes that trombone speak!

  • yaiyaiyaiyaiya--

  • i don´t know.... but i didn´t like it at all...

shitttt i lost my 6 minutes and 35 seconds too

  • sounds like ARNOLD SWARCHENEGGER at 1:01 lmao ayya yya ayya gyygy gayg ygyg ggy

  • ill be honetst, he looks like a great player, but this just seriosly pissed me off.

  • This is great stuff! You've always been an inspiration to the rest of us for taking trombone outside of its documented limits. These are some really great tools to add to the toolbox...thanks for the tips!

  • this is so fun to do, but its easier on tuba. check out Fnugg Blue on youtube

  • yaaaaaaaiyaaaaiyaiyaiyaiyaaaaaaai

  • maby its just my style of musid but i dont like this and i would like to get my 6 minutes and 35 seconds back

  • great sound! didn't know there is a physical way to sound like a wah pedal of guitar

btw i found u misspelled 'taoism' in your youtube profile lol

  • Wow nice

  • I've been playin trombone for seven years, I'm pretty good.

  • this relates to the video, how?

  • Really...you don't have any videos of yourself so I guess we have to take you at your word. Personally, I have my doubts, dollarmurky.

  • lol i've been playing 7 years too

  • i have been alive for at least twice that!

  • trombone ROCKS. though, i suck at playing it. haha

  • Very nice. I'm going to have to practice this now!

  • hi, im a trombone player, and i was wondering if that is just a normal sink plunger you are using, if so does it do the job well enough for big band stuff or do u recomend a proper one?

  • Yes, this is a normal plunger, although not really "normal" because this is the best plunger I have found. I bought it in a hardware store. I have a basket full of plungers from various hardware stores around the world. This is also the "proper" one. I have many plungers and the one I use is my favorite, of course.

  • Is this strictly a trombone and a plunger to make these sounds? (Along with human and voice?) It sounds like there is electronic altering, but hard to tell nad the video is blurry at times making me wonder if it was sped up/slowed down.

  • yeah, it's not that hard, ive been playing for 5 years & i can do it, not nearly that well, but you can get chords and stuff

  • okaaaaaaayyyyyy?............

  • lol it sounds like why why why why whyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy whywhwywhwywhywhwywhwywhwy

  • Y eso pa que sirve? ke polladon

  • Sure, switch to trombone, why not? Many trombone players started on trumpet, including me.

  • hey great job i have placed tons of comments on youtube to help me figure out if i should switch to trombone and need as much help as possible i have been playing trumpet for three years and am going to a small highschool and they dont have alot of trombone players or euphoneum players and am kinda leaning toward trombone but i dont know please help and wright back thanks

  • you are a boring instrument, terrihottygurl05

  • do you find it surprising you got 5 negatives posting comment like thay on something mostly trombone players are going to watch

  • ur awesome 5 stars i play trumpet and i had a stroke at birthy and handicapped!

  • Should have played with Duke Ellington and Tricky Sam Nanton, Maybe the Muppetshow.

  • I did play with the Duke Ellington Orch for 15 + years...... Ed

  • Im trying that tomoro

  • WOW!!!thats scary!!!

  • omg that fucking creeping right the hell out...

  • that shit sounds creepy..

  • Hi do you have written examples of this?

  • No, it's all improvised.

  • john cage meets peter frampton meets jazz

  • I get a strange feeling i my throat like I need to clear it after listening to this.

  • me 2

  • haha!!

  • one word: OMG

  • Unbelievable

  • This is the scariest thing I've ever heard, and I love it. BONE POWER! =P

  • This inspired me to try it. Really works, like a nasty dirty growl eh? Is this another way of flutter tonguing or a whole nother improv altogether?

  • Yes... (-;

  • Try using Multiphonics. It sounds like a Wah-wah guitar.

  • that will produce that sound?

or you need the plunger also?

i can do multiphonics [not that well as he does] but isn't their something u must change in you ambechure as well?

  • Well yeah. The plunger, like other mutes, gives the trombone the possibility of producing various timbres and colors. The "wah-wah" effect can be performed by simply creating a "shut-to-open" motion with the plunger whilst playing a note or playing a multiphonic.

Multiphonics, are complicated because they demand both vocal and instrumental performance. I recommend starting off with a low b-flat on the horn and singing an "F".

  • To produce it, it doesn't necessaringly require much changing of your embrechure, but your ability to produce a vocal sound(note of your choice) whilst vibrating your lips to maintain the note. After some practice, it becomes easier.

Just be sure to support yourself with enough air, maintain a good embrecure and vibration of the lip, and that your vocal note is well produced. You will eventually learn to not overshadow your trombones note.

  • i didn't really mean the multiphonics part so much as i think i'm asking about something like sam nanton used to do way back with ellington.

i'm sorry for not making that clear

but thank you for those explinations because i am trying to get better at that as well

  • WOW that was cool. As for anyone who didn't like it, all i can say is try it yourself. I'm finally trying stuff like this, but MAN is it taking a while to get comfortable with. Never seen anything this good.

  • sounds like one of those techno songs

  • I like the plunger But i liek to simplify is there a mute for T-Bones I think the name is a herman muter with gives it the similar sound

  • so how exactly do you go about making this sound?

  • Practice - Explore - have fun!!

  • Why do you people with the tricks always say that?

  • What he's doing is using a mute, nothing wierd there for you i hope.

The other part is multiphonics, he plays a note while singing another, which gives it that chord sound.

Very cool stuff to play with.

  • el coño de tu madre!

  • Trombone didgeridoo

  • Sounds like the teacher on the Peanuts cartoon! Ha!

  • i used that exact same technique for the charlie brown musical teacher.

  • they used a different kind of mute though, I forget the name, but it wasn't a plunger mute

  • well it was just for high school so no biggy.

  • sounds cool

  • iaee iaee iaee iaeaeai iaee......

  • bueno ¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡

  • multiphonics for the win, man.

  • man thats awsome. i love harmonics

  • Why the angry face? Does it hurt to do... whatever it is you are doing...?

  • It's not an angry face and it doesn't hurt. But, it does take a certain amount of concentration.

  • lool

  • Oh, okay. I thought it might've been majorly srainful or something.

  • I really don't know why, but that first note reminds me of louis armstrongs voice...

    hahahaha

  • Did Urbie do that just a tiny bit, on low Bb at the end of solos (in that key)?

I wonder about the physics nad the physiology that occur as the voice is added.

A great, old book, by the way, is "Experimental Music."

  • lol i never knew u could do that with a trombone :o

  • hey ed i have a trumpet straight mute similar to tricky sam's nonpereil, this helps a lot when trying to produce the yah yah, but is there any secret to singing....i e like singing under or above the note, or singing with an aa instead of ee sound???? thanks anything would help.

  • No secret, sorry!! You can help by making the vowel sounds with the tongue etc,. The rest is exploration. Hope that helps....

  • IA IA IA IA IA IA....aye aye aye! Very impressive, but the repetetive vowels got to me XD
