It's interesting how people view race. In Cabo Verde where I'm from he would be seen as a creolo or kriol like 99% of the Capeverdeans though we're island people from the continent Africa. A girl I know from Trinidad said that in Trinidad I"m not African or Black but a Dugla (excuse my spelling). In the Netherlands where I was born and raised people see me as black period. BUT I went to the Dominican Republic and they saw me as mulatta and Dominicana.

They had to be a mixture of all of the various ethinicities in order to branch into the various ethnicities we have today. I said Black but meant African. I am currently studying abroad in Chile, Ive been here since July. I too am half white/half black, I have green eyes & curly hair. Here I have been asked repeatedly what I am because there arent many people here like me (the Afro-Chileans are more north). Here they use the word "mulatto/a" but its not derogatory, there's just no other word to describe it. I for once became comfortable using it here.

Hispanic is a pretty broad term. Hispanic is essentially a generalized term commonly describing someone who is of mixed ancestory and from South America lol. Most Hispanics are actually Mestizo (i.e. Native American and white), not Mulatto. But there are populations with a high degree of Mulattoes (Cuba as I understand it) or those who are of Native America and black ancestory..or a mix of all three (Brazil and Peurto Rico has a very "mixed" population as does most of South America).

I'm more accustomed to "green-eyed devil". My maternal grandmother would call my brother that. He is light-skinned with green eyes. As are a lot of persons on my fathers side, including 2 of his sisters, and a son from his first marriage.
Do we really need a specific term for black-white people, though? Maybe it would be good to refer to ourselves simply as biracial or multiracial and then specify that we are of African and European descent if asked. This terminology may help us to maintain solidarity with all of the other mixed race groups, which I think is important.

It's interesting how people view race. In Cabo Verde where I'm from he would be seen as a creolo or kriol like 99% of the Capeverdeans though we're island people from the continent Africa. A girl I know from Trinidad said that in Trinidad I"m not African or Black but a Dugla (excuse my spelling). In the Netherlands where I was born and raised people see me as black period. BUT I went to the Dominican Republic and they saw me as mulatta and Dominicana.

They had to be a mixture of all of the various ethinicities in order to branch into the various ethnicities we have today. I said Black but meant African. Well, it turns out part of the remains of a human jawbone was found in the area of Israel and it dates back to 100s of 1000s of yrs. So it seems we have a new focus on our beginnings.

Nothing else is real. There are aspects of this you can NOT relate to unless you have lived as a black or mixed person. Nobody can relate to everyone's perspective.
The subject here is based on the massive cultural difference in America between Black and White people and how awkward it can be growing up in between both worlds. Here I have been asked repeatedly what I am because there arent many people here like me (the Afro-Chileans are more north). Hispanic is a pretty broad term. Hispanic is essentially a generalized term commonly describing someone who is of mixed ancestory and from South America lol. Most Hispanics are actually Mestizo (i.e. Native American and white), not Mulatto. But there are populations with a high degree of Mulattoes (Cuba as I understand it) or those who are of Native America and black ancestory..or a mix of all three (Brazil and Peurto Rico has a very "mixed" population as does most of South America).

aren't we in america all of mixed races? personally I don't know anyone who is pure of any race. myself for example i'm german, irish, dutch, cherokee and others. I have blue eyes and blonde hair and that means I'm pure white?

that is the popular ideal of most people now days. the term white person actually comes from late 1600 originating with the racialization of slavery at the time, in the context of the atlantic slave trade. the term white came into wide use in the British colonies in america from the 1680s. does anyone know someone of pure race in america? it all seems ridiculous.

I am mulatto myself......my sister's eyes are blue(how did she get blue eyes!God)....My eyes well you all would have to check my page to see my eye. They are from my mother(white mother).

Whether the info you mentioned is a hundred percent correct or not, I appreciate that you took the time to at least begin researching the orgins of these words which hold much power in our society. Tiffany, please know that alot of what you have discussed during this video is lacking true definition. ( i.e cracker referring to low class white person. cracker actually referred to those europeans who used the whip on Aboriginal (what you know as "black") people who were in forced servitude, for starters. So "Blackness" is not all of who you are. Is "Blackness" all of who ANY black person is while navigating through the United States seeking for some success? No one survives here if they're all about "Blackness".
This notion that your status is somehow exceptional because you LOOK mixed is an insult. All blacks in America are mixed - culturally, racially, emotionally - always of two minds.

Sweetie, I understand. I'm a quadroon of La. and I get called half-breed, wet-back, Mulatto, whitebread, white bitch, mutt... U name it, I've been called it. I hate it. I love my heritage, but narrow-minded people try to make us think we are all clumped up in one group. That's not right. Bi-racial, mixed, etc. people have very rich cultures, and some of us want to embrace that. African Americans get offended all the time b/c of how we look. That's not our problem, all we can do is love ourselves

the new name for mulatto is hispanic and many of the real black people consider them to be our enimies. the only mulattos that we consider to be black are those who identify themselves as black, kind of like obama does. he knows that he is a half breed but still identifies himself as a black man.
