  • This is wrong but a good starting point for beginners.

  • @hotman718 why because he doesn't play the E on the second fret?

  • Great videos Marty, love learning from you! could you post up Baby Blue from DMB?

  • What about the "in a boy's dream" part?

  • What about the "In a boys's dream" part?

  • I think you"re great Mr. Marty!! Thanks much...

  • Hey Marty (or anyone who can offer there advice), just picked up a guitar for the first time a few days ago, learning all the basic chords and what not, however when i try to position my fingers to work the base line and the other strings simultaneously it seems impossible... does the fact that im using a spanish-classical type guitar to learn make the difference? or is it just all in practice?.. let me know, Thanks.

  • @fightingirishx19 no, the classical shouldnt change anything. you only started a few days ago, learn a simpler song, try "wish you were here" by pink floyd. it seems impossible because your just getting used to an instrument. just practice and ull get it, but i wouldnt reccomend learning this for your first song

  • @fightingirishx19 at first it seems really difficult - i learned on a classical - made it harder for me cuz the kneck is wider - i excelled in learning once i got a flat top acoustic - i coulda never played this song back then on that classical . you can do it tho - just a lil more difficult when your first learnin' - just remember you keep your ring and pinky in the same position while only moving your index and middle

  • @fightingirishx19 Or learn "What i got" by Sublime. Thats really easy bro.

  • Thank you sooo much for doing this song! I've been looking for it everywhere and just found it, amazingly enough by my favorite online teacher. :) do you think you could do a tutorial of Ready To Fall (acoustic) by Rise Against? It'd be much appreciated!

    -Adeline

  • Thanks

  • Thanks a bunch! Great tutorial! Now I'm ready to play this, my moms favorite song, for her birthday coming up. Thanks again! =D

  • marty you're friggin unreal.

  • awesome i started learning this song from this vid and it only took me fourdays to learn thnx marty your amazing

  • This is a grate tutorial!

  • thank you very much. Your video is a very good start.

  • awesome tutorial-just starting to learn guitar and this is my goal song right now!

  • urgg!! this song makes me wanna cut off my pinky. ill get it adventully tho lol, thnks this helped a lot!

  • hey man thanks for the help!

  • i use my ring and pinky finger on that D/F# chord, it's a little awkward to hold when you're first learning it but it makes it sooo much easier to go back to the crash chord because you just slide those two fingers up 2 frets.

  • Soooooooo hard to stretch

  • your high E string is flllaaattt

  • Funny how so many pros come on here to complain. Nice teaching man got my first song figured out now, i think. Maybe i wont be playing in any bands anytime soon but im having fun with this dam thing now thanks.

  • MARTY. I AM BEGGING YOU. PLEASE TEACH HOW TO PLAY FRANCES FARMER WILL HAVE HER REVENGE ON SEATTLE! I have been wanting to learn it forever but NO ONE has put videos of it on YouTube. You're already my favorite guitar teacher but if you taught me this, I would love you forever. :)

  • he is awesome. divorce your wife and marry me. I am not hot nor rich, but I will treat you well, cook for you, and adore you.

  • actually its way on he's pressing the 5th fret of the B string giving the affect of the 2 notes E and E being played, this song has to be perfectly tuned to sound right, becuase if one of those 2 notes are not tuned it will sound un tuned. and its really hard to get a perfectly tuned guitar.

  • Way off!!!! Stop being a pussy and use all your fingers to play the correct chords. Yeah it hurts but sounds way better. If your gonna teach a song at least use the correct chords!!

  • horrible teaching

  • way off dude lol

  • you're a great teacher marty, but this is not how dave plays it... could you do the real version?

  • @neenofdee Good lord, the point of music being beautiful is to take it and make it into your own creation. There is no "real version" of this song. Dave plays what he plays, Marty plays how he plays.

  • I sorta got it but why do I can't easily stretch my index finger to the 2nd fret a string and It hurts my pinky to play the b string whial I'm stretching my index finger out :(

  • Hey Marty.... Thank you for this great lesson, you have a knack for teaching.....Any way you can teach us how to play my own prison???

    Thx Tony

  • Thanks yet again marty!

  • hes missing the index finger on the D string 2nd fret.

  • I <3 you..you're awesome! Thanks again for all the free video's and lessons you sent to me. You're a great teacher!

  • put your index on the 2nd fret of the 3rd string also. it makes it sound a lot more full

  • What is the strumming pattern for when you come crash?

  • can't you tune the thing first

  • Thanks this helped a lot, im having the worst time playing the bass and strumming!

  • one this song is badass and two MARTY is BADASS dont be hateing cause its untuned either way hes awsome and hes teaching you for FREE A-holes

  • @SEFenwick lol well said... i agree

  • You're a good teacher! :D thanx

  • a lot of help thanks

  • thank you so much. "The wise man does not lay up his own treasures. The more he gives to others, the more he has for his own"- Lao Tze

  • Your videos are so different because you teach slowly and clearly. I love anything Dave Matthews, I'm a very avid fan, aren't we all though..but I would really love to learn this song call "The Underdog" by Spoon. It's a fun jam with easy chords but I think the rhythm and strumming will be the death of me. If you could help me out that would be awesome!!! And I'm sure others would benifit as well:)

  • Something is really wrong here.

  • thaaank you

  • nic ending haha

  • Is that Labamba?

  • would suck if you have small hands. It's a pretty long stretch

  • @meanphenom

    not really

  • another pretty easy way to play this is to use your first finger to cover the d-string on the second fret and mute the g-string. you'll get the same chord and still have your remaining fingers left for the bass.

  • Thanks Marty, really nice breakup of the rythm and how the bass notes fit into the rythm. That was tricky.

  • Tune your damn guitar!

  • @ctenay Hah i noticed the same thing and was wondering if i just happened to be sensitive to out of tune strings or something. Its the flat high e string clashing with the e note on the b string.

  • is it standard tuning?

  • @casplash4 yup!

  • its labamba from conan obrien

  • what about the crash into me part real high at the end of the song??

  • Thanks!!!! that was a great help for a beginner!

    Keep em coming!!! :D:D

  • don't hit the D string, sounds bad

  • Cheers mate. Irishman lovin DM. I get your lessons daily. You are such a brilliant force on this dark planet!!!! Hey, is it 4.20 yet?

  • thank you so much

  • I LOVE YOU. Thank you soo much!

  • awesome man.. lookin at the tabs over at ultimate-guitar and watching this at the same time,, got the song down in 15 mins

  • Aloha marty...Thank you very much bro.You da man..

  • Thanks, very helpful when you break it down and do bits of pieces. Superb teaching method!!!

  • Another great lesson! Thanks Marty

  • Thanks Marty..I am a huge DMB fan..and new to the guitar..so want to play music I enjoy..you have picked quite a few songs I just love to hear and play...thanks again man..you rock.

  • thanks man.

  • An easier way to play it is using the chord 0-4-2-4-0-0. Picking pattern goes A-4, A-0, A-2, E-0, E-4, A-0, A-2. Just remember when you pick the A-2 to put your pointer finger back on D-2 for the strumming part. Sounds a lot cleaner and is easier to finger. Try it out Marty.

  • SHWEET, thanks Marty! awesome song

  • marty's SICK!

  • marty rocks!

  • thank u so much!!!

  • this helped me so much!! thank you!

  • what if my hand cant stretch that far???

  • @bradlax12 practice lol

  • then u just keep trying till u can. sometimes it can take awhile.
