Hey Marty (or anyone who can offer there advice), just picked up a guitar for the first time a few days ago, learning all the basic chords and what not, however when i try to position my fingers to work the base line and the other strings simultaneously it seems impossible... does the fact that im using a spanish-classical type guitar to learn make the difference? or is it just all in practice?.. let me know, Thanks.
@fightingirishx19 no, the classical shouldnt change anything. you only started a few days ago, learn a simpler song, try "wish you were here" by pink floyd. it seems impossible because your just getting used to an instrument. just practice and ull get it, but i wouldnt reccomend learning this for your first song
@fightingirishx19 at first it seems really difficult - i learned on a classical - made it harder for me cuz the kneck is wider - i excelled in learning once i got a flat top acoustic - i coulda never played this song back then on that classical . you can do it tho - just a lil more difficult when your first learnin' - just remember you keep your ring and pinky in the same position while only moving your index and middle
Thank you sooo much for doing this song! I've been looking for it everywhere and just found it, amazingly enough by my favorite online teacher. :) do you think you could do a tutorial of Ready To Fall (acoustic) by Rise Against? It'd be much appreciated!
i use my ring and pinky finger on that D/F# chord, it's a little awkward to hold when you're first learning it but it makes it sooo much easier to go back to the crash chord because you just slide those two fingers up 2 frets.
Funny how so many pros come on here to complain. Nice teaching man got my first song figured out now, i think. Maybe i wont be playing in any bands anytime soon but im having fun with this dam thing now thanks.

MARTY. I AM BEGGING YOU. PLEASE TEACH HOW TO PLAY FRANCES FARMER WILL HAVE HER REVENGE ON SEATTLE! I have been wanting to learn it forever but NO ONE has put videos of it on YouTube. You're already my favorite guitar teacher but if you taught me this, I would love you forever. :)
actually its way on he's pressing the 5th fret of the B string giving the affect of the 2 notes E and E being played, this song has to be perfectly tuned to sound right, becuase if one of those 2 notes are not tuned it will sound un tuned. and its really hard to get a perfectly tuned guitar.
Way off!!!! Stop being a pussy and use all your fingers to play the correct chords. Yeah it hurts but sounds way better. If your gonna teach a song at least use the correct chords!!
@neenofdee Good lord, the point of music being beautiful is to take it and make it into your own creation. There is no "real version" of this song. Dave plays what he plays, Marty plays how he plays.
I sorta got it but why do I can't easily stretch my index finger to the 2nd fret a string and It hurts my pinky to play the b string whial I'm stretching my index finger out :(
Your videos are so different because you teach slowly and clearly. I love anything Dave Matthews, I'm a very avid fan, aren't we all though..but I would really love to learn this song call "The Underdog" by Spoon. It's a fun jam with easy chords but I think the rhythm and strumming will be the death of me. If you could help me out that would be awesome!!! And I'm sure others would benifit as well:)
another pretty easy way to play this is to use your first finger to cover the d-string on the second fret and mute the g-string. you'll get the same chord and still have your remaining fingers left for the bass.
@ctenay Hah i noticed the same thing and was wondering if i just happened to be sensitive to out of tune strings or something. Its the flat high e string clashing with the e note on the b string.
Thanks Marty..I am a huge DMB fan..and new to the guitar..so want to play music I enjoy..you have picked quite a few songs I just love to hear and play...thanks again man..you rock.
An easier way to play it is using the chord 0-4-2-4-0-0. Picking pattern goes A-4, A-0, A-2, E-0, E-4, A-0, A-2. Just remember when you pick the A-2 to put your pointer finger back on D-2 for the strumming part. Sounds a lot cleaner and is easier to finger. Try it out Marty.
This is wrong but a good starting point for beginners.

@hotman718 why because he doesn't play the E on the second fret?
