The guy who's actually playing the violin is Dr.L.Shankar(now Shenkar) and composed the Heroes theme. You can even hear his voice in that theme. He was the founder of the world's first all acoustic Indian classical music-jazz-fusion band called Shakti with famed jazz guitarist, John McLaughlin along with tabla maestro Zakir Hussain and claypot wizard, Vikku Vinayakaram. Dr.L.Shankar gave his first violin concert when he was of age 6. He invented the 10-stringed double violin which he plays here.

@jonger991 The name of this music is South Indian style of classical music, which traditionally is called Carnatic classical music to distinguish it from the North Indian style of classical music called Hindustani classical music. The "raga" he plays is similar to scales in western scale, but we have microtones and very subtle variations in raga's which you don't have in scales. Raga has more structure than a conventional western classical scale and yet more free form, very conducive for jazz.

@jonger991 Carnatic classical music is as old as 400 years. It originated in the Southern half of India, and its roots are as old as the ancient Hindu scriptures called Vedas. The world's oldest singing tradition is from India called Dhrupad. It originated from one of the scriptures called the Sama Veda. This along with Siberian/Tuvan throat singing is considered the oldest singing traditions of the world. :)

@jonger991 contd.. Dhrupad itself is thousands of years old. The first text can be dated to 1294 CE. But the Veda's were not written in their original form.. so text-dating is useless in Indian scripture. Paper was invented in 105 AD. The Veda's and certainly the Sama Veda dates back to BC era. So, Dhrupad would have atleast as old, IMHO.

@Ladei4Lyfe It is not South Asian inspired. It is actually Carnatic classical music from South India. It is very orthodox, pure in its original form as its played here. This is not some jazzed up version. It is being played probably the greatest violinist of this century. Search for L Shankar and Abheri Tanam on youtube.Trust me, you will not regret the few minutes you spend listening to that. :)

I read "Interview with the vampire" , "Vampire Lestat" , "Queen of the damned" and now I am reading "Vampire Armand" and with reliability I can say that violin is only good thing in this movie...Lestat is not even made from Marius,lol .
