  • Why was he mad over some food? Is there something that happened before this that made him mad?

  • What the fuck is hop & jon??

  • I like how all the children look at the Mom when he says "Field Nigger" XD

  • He's like "NIGGA BE CRAZY ?"

  • funny how every time chalky asks a question, his wife answers the house nigger instead of her husband. women find out you headed to medical school and their tongues get attracted to your butthole or somethin'? my country ways put da food on dis' got damn table!

  • Such a powerful scene!.. I ADORE CHALKY WHITE!! You have to admit, that in every scene he is in, he gives a realist performance! You are the man Chalky!!!

  • Wher da damn hop & johns?!

  • I likes a duck- but 98% time I rather have a Hoppin John. It Good !!

  • @TheEldonfitz hoppin john a traditional Black food.

Anyway, i'm not Black, but i have to agree on one thing, when a family decides that their cultural traditional food is no longer good enough for them, that's when you know that they are fucked up.

I would rather have available my traditional food than simply expensive food. I would have tears in my eye if my Mama or grandmother made me the food she used to make me when i was a young man.

Women in the kitchen is no joke, its a blessing

  • @nodinitiative I know. We have Blackeyed peas ( Hoppin John) and Black beans and rice regularily. We love it !! High protein, great taste and meat is optional! I'm not black either-- I amuse myself by speaking and writing in dialect sometimes.. I do a marvelous Hillbilly as well. I mean no disrespect to anyone and agree with your assesment of the import of family traditions. Too much emphasis on upward mobility and acquisitions in this sad world. What we need is love and tolerance.

  • I think part of the issue here is a respect for humility. Chalky isn't an educated man, he's a self-made guy who looks after the people in his community (though, moreso in this season than in the previous). Having said that, he doesn't want to act upper-class because he doesn't feel that he is. He's a homegrown guy that has respect for the simpler things in life, and does what he needs to in order to provide for his family.

  • He's like fuck y'all, ima go whitlin'.

  • wow, the spirit of uncle ruckus is strong with his family

  • @whatsgoingon07 YESSSSS!!!!!

  • I was about to quit on Boardwalk Empire until i saw this scene.

  • What is Hoppin Jon? Rabbit?

  • haha this is one of my favorite scenes. I love Chalky White! Michael K Williams is one of the best actors around.

  • Samuel should have kept his mouth shut. ol thick eyebrow havin saying insultin garbage

  • Awwwww for the little girl 2:09 soooooo cute!!! I just wanna give her a big cuddle. And 1:04 My goodness she is beautiful, absolutely stunningly beautiful!!! I'm loving that coffee & cream skin tone.

  • He is a very good actor, has the potential to be a great actor and it is a very powerful scene, in context to the times and where Black folk where getting at that certain stage in history, but.......and I really am sorry for this.....look at his face. 0:27 Hahahaha that expession all through the scene just kills me. 1:56 I couldn't stop ROFL'ing & LMAO'ing all over the place. Hahaha....Look, look 2:11 you see??? 3:33 LOL and by the way, not being racist, but is he makin a fuckin spear??

  • I only see Omar Little

  • I would have slapped her when she said country ways

  • His family acting fake ass fuck.

  • OMAR COMIN' YO !

  • His wife said something stupid though...He asked wheres the hoppin john and she replied "thats not a proper food for our guest" and knowing chalky, who grew up poor and eating hoppin john all his life, of course he'll be pissed..that is why in the end of the scene he said "preety clear who the field nigger is" as he is already feeling alienated and its his country ways which is putting the food on the table like he said it.

Extremely powerful scene for his character.

  • "Preety clear who the field nigger is"

  • This nigga made me scared.

  • I just watched the producers diary on about this scene.

Basically, Chalky White had to work his way up to give his family the lifestyle he never had. In doing so, Chalky has become more distant from his family 2:58 (They're more educated than him) and everything JBWIOOP mentioned. I'd say that people who come from rags to riches have a much better understanding of life. I love this show; the characters have so much depth.

  • this is a great scene not every one will understand buh so powerful

  • "This is my house! And my country ways put the food on this goddam table!" LMAO! I was dyin laughing after he said that.

  • i think anyone with a disfunctional family will relate to this :-/

  • Chalky's one of the best characters on the show

  • Chalky White is such a drama queen. "I axed for Hoppin John!"

  • Chalky White: A real nigga

  • After looking up 'hoppin john' I gotta say that sure looks delicious. I can understand why Chalky would be upset hahaha

  • @Delta0prative i cant understand it. what the fuck is so repulsive about beans and rice? his wife belittled him to impress that young 'house-nigger'. frontin' her ass off for that fool, while chalky brings home the bacon and has given her a lovely life, a home and three beautiful children. he shoulda sent her ass out to the shed. it goes right back to what dunn purnsley said. he belittled chalky. then chalky's wife made him feel worse. everything in boardwalk empire is connected you know.

  • @Delta0prative i never had hoppin john but beans and rice is generally delicious. southern style its probably even better.

  • I can understand Chalky's lack of power in these times; I hate that he kinda took his frustrations out on his family here...But this kid and his wife really chose the wrong time to speak out here. The dude's sitting up here with a drink in his hand at dinner, obviously PISSED off.

  • Funny thing about this is it still goes on with us black folks. Us field niggas out there in the poor neighborhoods trying to survive the best way we can. We are looked down upon by a lot of educated more well off blacks. Now not all blacks treat each other this way but, you would be shocked by how much racism is practiced by US.

  • Omar comin', yo...

  • pretty clear who the Field Nigga is!!!

    Kenneth is a GREAT actor!

  • you should change it from 'chalky white at dinner' to 'guess who's coming to dinner'.

  • AWESOME actor!!!!

  • Haaha! Chalky is the man!!!

  • juan, christie, armstrong all of those fools

  • "INSIDE THE HOUSE" was Chalky White making that comment to Juan Williams from FOX?

  • I didn't say he doesn't have some white ancestry, I just said he wasn't mixed, meaning both of his parents were black. Black people come in all shades.

  • @JBWIOOP Thanks for clarifying that man. Some folks still don't understand us after all these dam years. LOL, that's not an insult either. I'm just saying.

  • when she said " you'll have to forgive my husband's country ways" Samuel should have kept his mouth shut and not said anything. Instead he goes " i completely understand" talk about adding salt to the injury..lol

  • Thank you for uploading these vids, my sky box in the UK has cut off so i can't watch these episode anymore. A question i have is, was chalky angry because the guy was mixed race?

  • @Talentz92 No, He feels that in his family's pursuit of education and wealth, they have lost their sense of history and racial pride. Suddenly dishes like "Hoppin John" are beneath them, and too "poor" to serve to guests. His problem with his daughter's suitor plays into the whole "House Negro/Field Negro" stereotype. If your not familiar, look it up. The young man is not mixed by the way, He's just light-skinned.

  • @JBWIOOP ohh ok i understand thanks for the explaination:).

  • @JBWIOOP and he got light skinned.......how???

  • @JBWIOOP He is mixed. If you were light skinned back then you were almost certainly a descendant of a slave master. Look up the term 'High Yellow'.

  • @JensLengmann Take a trip to Africa man and you'll see plenty of light skinned black folks. Not trying to get into a debate with you, I'm just saying.

  • @JBWIOOP You're right, but they deliberately made that character light complected. There's always been unspoken tension between light skinned and dark skinned blacks.

  • @JBWIOOP Of course he's mixed. The reason why he's highly educated and his family are so afluent is because he was "lucky" enough be a descendant of a slave master who fornicated (whether that be through rape or consensual sex) who acknowledged his illegitimate offspring and saw fit for them to be educated. If they were doubly lucky, Master, might have given them an inheritance.

  • Samuel is not mixed, he is LIGHT-SKINNED. Yes, he has European ancestry, most blacks do. If he was mixed, he would be a different shade and he would show more distinct Caucasian facial features, i.e, a thinner nose and lips. Black people come in all shades, this scene exemplifies that, and a lighter skin tone DOESN'T necessarily mean you are biracial...I don't care if it's the 1920's or today.

  • @JBWIOOP What on earth are you talking about? If he's got both European and west African ancestry, how is he not mixed? How, where and when did this European admixture appear? how else do you account a mixed/black person's white ancestry, given the fact slavery ended in 1865, this show is set soon after ww1; which ended in 1918, and that america has always been fiercely anti-miscegenation? the actor clearly has a significant amount of white ancestry, it could be anything from 10%-over 50%.

  • @JBWIOOP the phenotypes of 1st generation black/white people vary more than any other. i'm from london, where black/white mixed babies are given birth more than any other. about 1/10 of my secondary (high) school were 1st generation black/white and loads of them who were more "negroid" in appearance than this actor. what you're also forgetting is that a lot of 1st generation mulatto's in the "new world" will be genetically more european than sub-saharan african, due to slave-era admixture

  • @JensLengmann He is angry with his wife and his daughter's date because they're "High Yella" and perpetuating it's subsequent stereotypes. Remember, this is the first we see of chalky since he was in jail. It's obvious that what Dunn Purnsley said to him about being and arrogant, uppity, sellout got under his skin, and he is taking it out on his family. I'm African-American, and the subject matter here is something I, as well as all black people know very well.

  • @JensLengmann Chalky is not educated, in fact, it was heavily implied in a previous episode that he can't even read. His family is wealthy because he is a successful bootlegger/carpenter and can afford to have a nice home and have his kids properly educated. This nonsense about slave children hitting the "Illegitimate child" lotto and getting a piece of "Masta's" pie is absolutely ridiculous. It was rare to see blacks with this type of wealth back then, but they did exist.

  • @JBWIOOP Chalky may nt be educated but he has engh smart in him to send his childrn to schl n to ensure that they dn't get involve in crime. He may lve money but he has shown his loyalty n honor time n time again both to his allies n his pple.

I really cringe when his wife said dat he still has his country ways.

I really hve a lot of respect 4 Chalky, he knows he is black but he does nt act like a nigger, he is acting as a human being who gives respect to those who also gives him respect.

  • Thank you!

  • should have made hoppin john too. can't go wrong with rice and beans

  • @techi9 also the guest was a lil arrogant. when his wife made the comment "you have to forgive my husband's country ways". I would have not said nothing.

  • @techi9 I agree. If you are the guest at another man's table. It's best just keep your mouth shut. You can never go wrong with that.

  • @techi9 Haha, I was wondering what the correct response was in that situation.

"Stare vacantly across the table" is the best thing I can come up with.
