@RealSebus He sounds this way on some of the bootlegs/videos as well. Sounded to me more like he was hungover/had cold. But there is also a video where he's doing some AJFA song and he's having the same problems.
@RAZOR944 Oh my good god in heaven dude, I didn't think a cover would be so horrible...I'm speechless.......That cover is garbage and that is beyond my opinion, that is fact.
muy bueno loco muy bueno seria bueno tambien que hagas lo propio tuyo sacandolo desde adentro pero no esta nada mal lo que haces. Solo haciendo lo tuyo podras ser unico como los metallica
@ps3tna Well... he blew his voice on the "So What" cover... so it was a little after the black album....... maybe he blew his voice a couple of times.... (that's most likely) but still..
@Gamez4Lif3 actually he said the so what cover (like alot of the covers on garage inc. recorded at different times) it was recorded during the making of the black album he said on some kind of monster doc. "i blew my voice out on the black album doing the cover song so what"
The voice of James sounds weird, because I think they weren't prepared to record the demo. They probably just wanted to save the riffs and lyrics on a tape.
@arlwwe08 Not sure why, but maybe most of their earlier demos are just too crude and unfinished. It's known that Bob Rock made the band play together a lot, in the studio, when making the Black Album. Ulrich has said earlier recording sessions were more about nailing perfect, but separate, tracks for each instrument. Also, if a demo sounds really bad, you might regret you ever heard it...
i'm totally +++ surprised he sounded this way. it gives an oportunity for other young, not developed artists to hope they can improve with time as much as metallica has
hahahaha that is ABSOLUTELY James Hetfield lol. dunno when the demo was recorded, but sounds like '90 to '91, before his voice got hella lot deeper. this is AJFA style vocals.
Makes one think though... Was So What the last track they made during the black album?.. cause if not then one could get the idea that we would be able to hear on a specific track where his voice sounds a bit messed up or something...
@CkY3221; I heard his voice got fucked up touring for the black album for 3 years straight. He had to get a vocal coach to really learn how to sing. I have always like his voice. He sounds amazing at all the World Magnetic shows.
@undertakeredgar That's probably the solo Kirk made and noone liked it. Then, Papa Het had to come in and tell him how to do proper solo. That would be standard IMHO.
The 3 years tour supporting the Black album really contirbuted to his voice declining. All of those shows and beers night after night really take a toll on the vocal chords.
Sounds like it belonged on AJFA, James still had some youth in his voice here. But then he actually learned how to sing...

People hate Bob Rock for many reasons, but one thing we can give him the props for, is pushing Kirk to his limits for the solo on this song.

I love how grainy this sounds, makes it sound that much more surreal. Any one agree? Especially the instrumentals.

@undertakeredgar Bob Rock pushed Kirk like to the brink cause he felt this song needed the perfect solo. So it was bound to be "way better"
