  • I wanted to shoot myself while watching this.

  • I think every major character is a 'Local Hero' in this film, that's the point. Victor is a local hero, welcomed as such; Gordan is a local hero in getting the brilliant deal for the townsfolk; Danny is a local hero for saving the environment; Marina is too for holding the dream in her soul; Ben is because he is the custodian of the bay; Mack is for his personal redemption and of course Happer is for have the means to make their dreams come true. I hope Mack went back. *g*

  • This is a Perfect Movie, no question.

  • When I took some Fil Studies classes in college, this film was one of our most prominent discussions points.

At first I didn't like it but over time that changed. It was quaint.

  • one of my top films of all time. unpretentious and perfect. a film i watch over and over again...and i've had the soundtrack since it came out. first on vinyl, then cd now on my ipod.

  • @cfwmoxie I totally agree m8. I just saw The Tree of Life and couldn't help but think it was a pretentious version of Local Hero without the heart and soul of this film.

  • @cfwmoxie Yup, I saw it the cinema, taped it from the television, got a VHS version, finally found a DVD, bought the album, then the CD and now have it on my MP3. The music, evokes the movie.

  • wtf is this crap!! lol

  • LLOOVE IT!!!!!

  • This is my all-time favourite , everlasting beautiful magic movie. Since the 80 ties. And until today , this hasn't changed. And I guess - it never will. I will love it until my last breath.

    Thank you Bill Forsyth.

  • I work in the motion picture industry -- primarily representing major Hollywood studios -- but this unpretentious, little Indie is one of a half-dozen or so films I make a point of watching again and again. While it's no "Citizen Kane," "Local Hero" is right up there with other "perfect" films.

  • It's good to find that other people appreciate this movie too. It is interesting to read all your thoughts on it as no one has ever mentioned to me that they love it too!..

  • Either you get this film or you don't. And if you don't, I feel truly sorry for you.

  • This is, without doubt, that greatest film ever created. End of story.

  • One of the best trailers ever made. The music is stunning in its simple Celtic beauty, and the scenes give a great idea of what the movie will be about without spoiling the story.

  • This movie is genius - it is a quiet, heart-breaking, poignant little film that sneaks up on you and firmly plants itself in your heart. I saw it aaaaages ago as a teenager and promptly went out and bought the soundtrack (on cassette!) because I had to keep a bit of Mac and Ben and Gordon with me. And Knopfler's soundtrack is just mesmerizing...

  • Malcom Tucker!

  • I think Danny is the "Local Hero", because he followed up on Marina's suggestion that they should build a marine research laboratory, and told Happer about the idea.

  • MacIntyre is the "Local Hero" (for most of the film) - but do titles really matter? I saw this last night and I never knew about this film before. All around 100% - there were a lot of dumb films made then (and a lot more now), but I decided not to channel on this one. Glad I didn't - you don't need violence and gratuitous sex scenes to make a good movie.

  • Wo was that Peter Capaldi 1.18 ? He looks well young compared to the Thick of it

  • This is the best movie I have ever seen. My father introduced this movie to me six months before he passed away from cancer. I am certainly glad I got a chance to discover this movie.

  • I love this movie!!!

  • I didnt really find this film the best, and I didnt really understand why Mac is the hero when In reality isent Burt lancaster the hero in the end???

But still its a nice quirky film, the gentle humor reminds me of doc martin

  • Beautiful character driven film by Bill Forsyth.

  • guys this is on Go Movie World . com

  • I did enjoy this movie, and I found it a gentle comedy film, but I didnt understand quite how he was a hero because...

    *SPOLIERS!*

At the end Burt is the hero by not allowing it to be built over the village, isent that true, or did I miss a bit in it?

  • @xaxie1 *SPOILER*

Ben I believe is the "Local Hero," because he refused to cave in and sell his beach even with his neighbors threatening his life.

  • lol, my mum was an extra in this movie!:D

  • You simply can't live without this movie...

  • The loveliest movie there is...There is no other way to put it...And it has not aged...

  • This movie has something no modern film has; Heart

  • lol....scent of a woman....changeling....inkheart....braveheart....the wrestler...

  • One of my favorite movies ever.

  • the place where this was filmed (pennan, aberdeenshire) is away to be ruined from landslides and such..... shame i used to work in that pub

  • I don't really think this trailer does the film justice.

  • This trailer is not great. But this a truly great movie. Sorry folks a lot of sh#t doesn't get blown-up real good. Local Hero has one of the most bittersweet endings I've ever seen.

  • Do you want to be a film critic so much you come on to youtube and voice you opinion that doesn't really help any one?

  • I quite wish that more cinematic garbage like this appeared more often, maybe there'd be some more films I'd like to watch. It's a shame that modern works like The Mummy 3, Resident Evil: Extinction, and the genuinely thought provoking *genre* Movie series (Meet the Spartans, etc) seem to be killing off cinematic garbage like this and I just don't understand it. Have you seen the Lethal Weapon series, maybe that would live up to your high standards?

    Happy trolling fellow youtube user.

  • *slaps forehead*

    I messed that up didn't I?

*Happy trolling fellow youtube user; rouncer74 :)

  • ok, ok. maybe i was a bit harsh in calling this film garbage.. in all honesty it did leave a really pleasant aftertaste when i heard the genius of knoppfler at the end. but for the most part i found it a drag.

oh and by the way... all of the movies you have mentioned all sucked.. perhaps you shouldnt be so presumptious of other peoples likes and dislikes. at least i didnt use witless sacrcasm to explain my thoughts on this subject.

  • It's a fair point that stating that I, even if you too happened to be presumptious of peoples likes and dislikes, think they sucked, but it doesn't make it true (I for one enjoyed the semi-brainless Lethal Weapon films), however I appologise for my sarcasm. However that is all I appologise for, extracting all sarcasm, my previous comment still stands.

New films are generally crappy, explosions, sex and swearing vs plot, character development and insight.

Thank goodness both types include humour.

  • live a few miles away from pennan :)

  • why is he a hero-what did he do?

  • Ben is the hero of this movie. he is the only one who wasnt bribed into accepting lancasters characters offer.

  • I prefer the live version of the song on Sultans of Swing cd

  • This film is my alltime favourite. I lived a few miles from Pennan when I was a child and visited during the filming. It got me into acting and have since performed in a few Scottish films. I visit Pennan regularly and have a friend with a small cottage there. We often go down for lunch in the Pub and sit on the harbour wall drinking pints of lager. It's one of the best places in the world for me. When I die, my ashes will be scattered on the beach there. xx

  • My fave film of all time too but what an awful trailer. I hope to visit Pennan one day, hopefully before your ashes are all over the beach! :) I fell in love with the place when I first saw the film, but have held back from visiting it, in case I would be disappointed.

  • @bobbledog1980

You WILL NOT BE DISSAPOINTED. GO THERE!!! I did. I am from Norway so i was a long way....and when i got home I drank a bottle...put the movie on...and yes...tears streaming down. I love it. Pennan(the town) has not changed. Its almost the same. AND...you can stay at the Inn now. (Not the one in the movie) Beeing there is like beeing in Local Hero 3D....If I ever get to marry again...it will be in this village. With the girl of my life....And a whisky.

  • @Lynsay73

    Mine too(:-)

  • best film ever. best soundtrack ever

  • number 1 favourite movie of all time!

  • Type in Tripping Up Trump in Youtube.

Real life version of the story

  • thank you : )

  • Great movie, horrible trailer.

  • What's so amazing about Billy Forsyth is that his movies have a dramatic arc so subtle that they should be boring, yet they aren't. Same pace all over the place, but when the movie is over you're already missing it. This is one of the few movies that made me cry.

  • As someone once said, Bill Forsyth makes his movies entirely out of scenes other directors would cut. But it works :)

  • the soundtrack for this movie is awesome

  • simply a great movie, every1 should watch it, its simply fantastic..

  • "What's the most amazing thing you've ever found?"

"Impossible to say. You see, there's something amazing...every...two of three weeks."

    Brilliant.

  • How's the casserole d' lapin?

Okay, here's my favorite bit: Mac out on the docks with 4 or 5 local fisherman types and a baby in a pram. When he asks who's baby none of them answer and they all look a bit sheepish.

When you talk about understated and subtle and brilliant that's the scene that comes to mind.

If it's not the best comedy movie ever made it certainly is the most under-rated.

  • "I want to stay here, run the hotel, do little bits of business. Take the Porsche, the house the job..." Give me Pennan and Morar, Gordon and Stella, Knox and Happer, and the Northern Lights that transform the night sky. I never tire of this film, the story, and the moment-suspended-in-time quality of it. Favorite film.

  • The best film ever, it just gets better everytime you see it.

  • Agreed. There should be more films that make you feel so alive. One of my favorites of all time. Brilliant stuff!

  • Love the movie, but the trailer is a little odd. "The story of an ordinary man who cared enough to do something extraordinary". Er...what?

  • I was 13 years old when I saw this movie. 5 years later I was in the Marines serving in far off lands. I looked to the sky and thought of this wonderful movie. It has since become my benchmark, I simply love this movie for so much. Thanks for making it :)

  • Agree with whats been said. One of my all time favourite films, forget films that are all special effects, give me a storyline with REAL people and great acting.

  • One of my all time great films. You are living the Community

  • i've visted both pennan and morar where the film was set and i must say that they are both truly amazing places.this film is one of my favorites ever

  • One of my favourite getaway films.

    I love this to death.

  • After the film I just went to google and searched for the place for the pics from where this was filmed... when my friend asked me if I would recomend a film to him I immediately gave him Local Hero. This is the most beautifl movie I've ever seen in my life and in the background is the music of one of true musical geniuses Mark Knopfler. I've went to his concert two times in almost a month and one of the two main highlights on both was Going Home.

  • Simply a great film. Sure made me want to move to Scotland.

  • Among the best cinema music of all time.

  • I love this film too. It is my all-time favourite. Quirky and brilliant and the music is great. Watch it! you won't be disappointed

  • I love this film, and I seem to have trouble getting people to see it, but it is so great!

  • i love the going home theme in the background!

  • I also enjoyed my last viewing of the film with a nice 15-year old........

    Glenlivet

  • Not a great trailer but a very good film. Might make you want to move to Scotland.

  • Brilliant film. Just RE-viewed it today. Wondering if an enhanced DVD version of it will be forthcoming. Find 'The Thick Of It' for an older, but still funny, Peter Capaldi. He's brilliant! Funny also--two of my top 10 movies of all time are Enigma films. Skål as Oldsen says...hehe....webbed toes...

  • They've just re released the 25th anniversary edition of this film &yes it's been digitaly re mastered, i can't believe this was 1983 i went to see it at the odeon in glasgow. god i feel old now lol.

  • cheers peecinjam for that info. I'll be getting it as soon as I can find it.

  • I think it is a great movie.. I saw it two times before i really liked it.. Fantastic music from Mark Knopfler too.

  • i have told many people about this movie and always get a good response...i left scotland and moved to california with my family when i was 9 and this film brings back a flavor that is hard to pin down in words..the earlier whisky references are well said

  • I know the flavor you are talking about!! There IS something very special about this movie! I thought "The Matchmaker" filmed in Ireland, was very similar, dry sense of humour! Cheers!

  • cant help thinking HighlandFilm had had a cup of tea and a vinegum. But what a film

  • hey, its a great film mate, and reminds me of the way the highlands used to be. fulton mackay is my dads first cousin.

  • absolutely one of my all-time-top-3-movies! have been to pennan (village) and to Morar and Arisaig (the beach), too, last year. This movie is like a dram of Laphroaig: smooth, smoky, ... world class!

  • One of my top 5 all time favorite films. Wish there were more up on the site than just the trailer! Subtle, magical, and brilliant in every way.

  • fantastic film. gvet a bottle of wine, a good fire goin, a cut iof slamon, and get pished! I knew a lot of folk in this film.

  • It is great with a wonderful ending.

  • Great Film.......Great Music from Mark Knopfler.
