I think every major character is a 'Local Hero' in this film, that's the point. Victor is a local hero, welcomed as such; Gordan is a local hero in getting the brilliant deal for the townsfolk; Danny is a local hero for saving the environment; Marina is too for holding the dream in her soul; Ben is because he is the custodian of the bay; Mack is for his personal redemption and of course Happer is for have the means to make their dreams come true. I hope Mack went back. *g*
one of my top films of all time. unpretentious and perfect. a film i watch over and over again...and i've had the soundtrack since it came out. first on vinyl, then cd now on my ipod.
@cfwmoxie I totally agree m8. I just saw The Tree of Life and couldn't help but think it was a pretentious version of Local Hero without the heart and soul of this film.
@cfwmoxie Yup, I saw it the cinema, taped it from the television, got a VHS version, finally found a DVD, bought the album, then the CD and now have it on my MP3. The music, evokes the movie.
This is my all-time favourite , everlasting beautiful magic movie. Since the 80 ties. And until today , this hasn't changed. And I guess - it never will. I will love it until my last breath.
I work in the motion picture industry -- primarily representing major Hollywood studios -- but this unpretentious, little Indie is one of a half-dozen or so films I make a point of watching again and again. While it's no "Citizen Kane," "Local Hero" is right up there with other "perfect" films.
It's good to find that other people appreciate this movie too. It is interesting to read all your thoughts on it as no one has ever mentioned to me that they love it too!..
One of the best trailers ever made. The music is stunning in its simple Celtic beauty, and the scenes give a great idea of what the movie will be about without spoiling the story.
This movie is genius - it is a quiet, heart-breaking, poignant little film that sneaks up on you and firmly plants itself in your heart. I saw it aaaaages ago as a teenager and promptly went out and bought the soundtrack (on cassette!) because I had to keep a bit of Mac and Ben and Gordon with me. And Knopfler's soundtrack is just mesmerizing...
I think Danny is the "Local Hero", because he followed up on Marina's suggestion that they should build a marine research laboratory, and told Happer about the idea.
MacIntyre is the "Local Hero" (for most of the film) - but do titles really matter? I saw this last night and I never knew about this film before. All around 100% - there were a lot of dumb films made then (and a lot more now), but I decided not to channel on this one. Glad I didn't - you don't need violence and gratuitous sex scenes to make a good movie.
This is the best movie I have ever seen. My father introduced this movie to me six months before he passed away from cancer. I am certainly glad I got a chance to discover this movie.
This trailer is not great. But this a truly great movie. Sorry folks a lot of sh#t doesn't get blown-up real good. Local Hero has one of the most bittersweet endings I've ever seen.
I quite wish that more cinematic garbage like this appeared more often, maybe there'd be some more films I'd like to watch. It's a shame that modern works like The Mummy 3, Resident Evil: Extinction, and the genuinely thought provoking *genre* Movie series (Meet the Spartans, etc) seem to be killing off cinematic garbage like this and I just don't understand it. Have you seen the Lethal Weapon series, maybe that would live up to your high standards?
ok, ok. maybe i was a bit harsh in calling this film garbage.. in all honesty it did leave a really pleasant aftertaste when i heard the genius of knoppfler at the end. but for the most part i found it a drag.
oh and by the way... all of the movies you have mentioned all sucked.. perhaps you shouldnt be so presumptious of other peoples likes and dislikes. at least i didnt use witless sacrcasm to explain my thoughts on this subject.
It's a fair point that stating that I, even if you too happened to be presumptious of peoples likes and dislikes, think they sucked, but it doesn't make it true (I for one enjoyed the semi-brainless Lethal Weapon films), however I appologise for my sarcasm. However that is all I appologise for, extracting all sarcasm, my previous comment still stands.
New films are generally crappy, explosions, sex and swearing vs plot, character development and insight.
This film is my alltime favourite. I lived a few miles from Pennan when I was a child and visited during the filming. It got me into acting and have since performed in a few Scottish films. I visit Pennan regularly and have a friend with a small cottage there. We often go down for lunch in the Pub and sit on the harbour wall drinking pints of lager. It's one of the best places in the world for me. When I die, my ashes will be scattered on the beach there. xx
My fave film of all time too but what an awful trailer. I hope to visit Pennan one day, hopefully before your ashes are all over the beach! :) I fell in love with the place when I first saw the film, but have held back from visiting it, in case I would be disappointed.
You WILL NOT BE DISSAPOINTED. GO THERE!!! I did. I am from Norway so i was a long way....and when i got home I drank a bottle...put the movie on...and yes...tears streaming down. I love it. Pennan(the town) has not changed. Its almost the same. AND...you can stay at the Inn now. (Not the one in the movie) Beeing there is like beeing in Local Hero 3D....If I ever get to marry again...it will be in this village. With the girl of my life....And a whisky.
What's so amazing about Billy Forsyth is that his movies have a dramatic arc so subtle that they should be boring, yet they aren't. Same pace all over the place, but when the movie is over you're already missing it. This is one of the few movies that made me cry.
Okay, here's my favorite bit: Mac out on the docks with 4 or 5 local fisherman types and a baby in a pram. When he asks who's baby none of them answer and they all look a bit sheepish.
When you talk about understated and subtle and brilliant that's the scene that comes to mind.
If it's not the best comedy movie ever made it certainly is the most under-rated.
"I want to stay here, run the hotel, do little bits of business. Take the Porsche, the house the job..." Give me Pennan and Morar, Gordon and Stella, Knox and Happer, and the Northern Lights that transform the night sky. I never tire of this film, the story, and the moment-suspended-in-time quality of it. Favorite film.
I was 13 years old when I saw this movie. 5 years later I was in the Marines serving in far off lands. I looked to the sky and thought of this wonderful movie. It has since become my benchmark, I simply love this movie for so much. Thanks for making it :)
Agree with whats been said. One of my all time favourite films, forget films that are all special effects, give me a storyline with REAL people and great acting.
After the film I just went to google and searched for the place for the pics from where this was filmed... when my friend asked me if I would recomend a film to him I immediately gave him Local Hero. This is the most beautifl movie I've ever seen in my life and in the background is the music of one of true musical geniuses Mark Knopfler. I've went to his concert two times in almost a month and one of the two main highlights on both was Going Home.
Brilliant film. Just RE-viewed it today. Wondering if an enhanced DVD version of it will be forthcoming. Find 'The Thick Of It' for an older, but still funny, Peter Capaldi. He's brilliant! Funny also--two of my top 10 movies of all time are Enigma films. Skål as Oldsen says...hehe....webbed toes...
They've just re released the 25th anniversary edition of this film &yes it's been digitaly re mastered, i can't believe this was 1983 i went to see it at the odeon in glasgow. god i feel old now lol.

I did enjoy this movie, and I found it a gentle comedy film, but I didnt understand quite how he was a hero because...
*SPOLIERS!*
At the end Burt is the hero by not allowing it to be built over the village, isent that true, or did I miss a bit in it?
