  • Damn those DO sound good. Really nice playing too. That definitely helps. I'm surprised Yamaha didn't put out some kind of PHX snare. If they're working on that I'd love to find out more.

  • holy ghost notes batman!!!

  • what kind of snare drum does he have anyone know for sure if so thanks very much for letting me know because i'm really liken the sound of that snare drum

  • world class man.

  • i dont get why people spend their money on such a expensive drum set when you can get almost the exact or even better sound with another nice kit, i prefer yamaha rock tour custom, from where i see it mine sounds way better, but i think its because of the tuning

  • From 4:00-4:15...that HAS to be transcribed and made a lesson on HOD...Excellent work man!

  • sounds good man. cool kit and cymbal sounds. nice playing too.

  • I think there is something on the ceiling? He must be staring at a bug

  • Gorgeous kit man...you were out what...? 7G's for this kit? great drumming too!

  • These Drums are Killer. He's not exaggerating! Plus his Drumming Technics just pushes me more over the edge. Awesome Video! Great Work Steve!

  • Thanks for post this video. I am impressed for your great talent more than the "new" yamaha phx. Honestly, I think that you would have cymbals according to your level and the rest of the drum. Its only my opinion. Greetings from Spain

  • Yamaha Phoenix with the Ash color is BEAUTIFUL!

  • you're on a league of your own sir! awesome !

  • Man I love to watch a great traditional player play. That was sweet. sweet sweet sweet

  • any advice on drum tuning ur tones r amazing!?

  • at 1:57 he cracks

  • you have a sick left hand

  • Great playing man! But do you always play emperors on toms ? I always like thinner heads to test beautiful shells so you get the best results of the shell. Not that i don't like the sound , but have you tried ambassodors?

  • Not sure bout the kit...but u my freind are an exceptional talent...luvin it! ;o)

  • @connerthedrummer - I have an Oak Custom set and I love them. They have great tone and tons of attack.

  • The Oak is an amazing sounding kit wich has a class on it own just like the Maple/Birch custom and Recording custom and PHX. All high level kits wich have theire own unique style.

This PHX is a true beauty and you're playing is sweet.

  • Wicked playing steve! Interesting choice with tom depths, any reason for that?

  • That kit is like £4500. It's insane!

  • ben stiller voice

  • Fantastic sounds! I consider my self an intermediate player, and I'm looking to upgrade my old Exports to a Yamaha Oak Custom. Does anyone have any experience with them?

  • @Connerthedrummer You'd be better off with a nice Birch kit IMO.

  • they're sweet! but i would still go with a maple shell kit :)

  • Dave weckl, Vinnie Colaiuta influences, i believe he has listened to many others also but yeah i can hear some Weckl and Colaiuta in there:P

    does anyone agree?^^

  • i agree with you but for sure weckl does not have hands like this cat!!! vinnie on the other hand does

  • He studied with Dave Weckl iirc.

  • dude amazing playing..

    and great drum face jaja

  • top notch playing, steve owns those yammies.

  • this drum is awesome, for me is the best drum in the world

  • Geez. These drums make DWs look cheap. I would buy them though if I had 10,000 dollars or however much. And you do play like Dave Weckl, and by that I mean awesomely.

  • where did you put your recorder to get this nice sound? awesome bass drum sound and not too loud cymbals!

  • beautiful playing!!

  • ....beautiful.

  • Your experiences jibe with mine. The kit I played at PASIC was very sensitive at all dynamic levels, across the frequency spectrum. It seems like Yamaha is going after what Tempus and Brady offer in terms of sound output . All of them can sound bigger than they are, if appropriately stroked.

  • I want one!

  • man u play with such maturity i love it, but where the fuck r u looking haha whats on the ceiling./?

  • Yamaha are great instrument manufacturers, and their drums are consistently fabulous...i wish i had the money for some of their upper level stuff...

  • agree with gang warden with the styles

  • nice weckl triplet lick at 3:03

  • Nice drums. very nice. And nice playing mate - very clean. I can hear a touch of Weckl and Gadd in your style - Real nice playing. I own a set of Pearl Reference - and love them - But if I was in the market for a new kit today, it would most definitely be PHX. Awesome

  • Great kit, but I think a close mic setup would do a much better job of representing the sound of the kit. The sound is flat and dead with whatever mic is being used (camera mic?).

  • Hey man, great playing and musicality!

  • Man that middle tom is killllllin. I am forever battling with my middle tom sound and that is the sound I'm looking for...

Steve I like the way you explain how YOU want the drums to sound like - it makes sense. It's in real terms, not techincal gibberish. Love your playing as always bro. josh from South Africa.

  • how did u afford those?!?! their like 10 grand for a 6 piece!

  • i got turned off by yamaha oak customs... I recently bought a sonor delite kit... i know what you mean about "drums on steroids" nice kit brother..nice chops.. thx for posting

  • Flaw- and effortless, enjoyable!

    Respect.

  • that was sweet! def weckl inspired and as good, recording let you down a bit, but your skill definately didn't.

  • what kind of cymbal are you playing on at 6:09?

  • It's a stack of a ZXT Trasher, and an Oriental splash I believe.

  • @yamahadrumsman a little one

  • You should try acting less like Dave Weckl, and spend more time miking your drums to give us a better sounding demo. Anyway, very impressive drums indeed!

  • sounds really really good! i can imagine they sound fuckin amazing with mics... great drumming !!!

  • amazing video, I can not stop watching it, what kind of heads are you using on your snare and toms?

  • toms clear emps. Snare coated amb (all remo)

  • Somebody likes Vinnie.............

  • you always looked up while you're playing.

like you worried, thinking about "please don't fu*!*ed up, please don't fu*#@ed up"

    lol

  • Er, no. I think that's what you call concentration.

  • He is unreachable.

  • STEVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!you are great drummer and teacher. Your dvd shed some light is GREAT.Dvd helps to understand progressive patterns in todays drumming.THANK YOU.and keep rockin.

  • for me personally the perfect kit would include these toms

a 22 dw bass and a shine custom snare drum

    that would be my dream

  • The legendary 12" tom-tom that rings forever... Awesome kit and great playing !

  • I just wet myself cuz this sounded so good.

  • Really great sounding drums and ofcourse your playing is OVER THE TOP. Couple things I found interesting that are beside the point here; My A customs are warpy too! And are those sugar maple blazers? I'm currently using them and I really love them...although they feel quite slick in my hand...nothing a little gorrilla snot doesn't cure though! =) Thanks for the great upload.

  • amazing technique

  • awesome finish on the drums!! aren't they like 5k+

  • Aren's they like 10k?

  • The cymbal above your hi-hat appears to have a few holes drilled into it. Do you have some sort of "preparation" on that thing? Screws and bolts in there, or something?

  • You can see the rivets moving in it at about 3:14, when he hits it.

  • It's a Zildjian Azuka with Rivets. It's a nice china cymbal substitute without the sharp attack of a china.

  • Whoa this video looks and sounds better in HD, Love those drums man you got some mad chops.

  • Incredible drummer. Yamaha ftw!

  • Probably not the first one to tell you that, but man ou have very fluid and solid chops. You were doing marching right?

Oh yeah, drums sounds awesome. They put my Designers to shame!

  • Yeah, in HS. But we were pretty serious about it.

  • Those drums are the BEST as you said best possible sounding drum on steroids!!

  • You really deserve to play these amazing drums!!!!!

  • ur a vinnie fan !?

    ATB

    Daniel

  • You're awesome Steve ! Fluid, powerful, a lot of dynamics ... wow ! It would be great to hear those drums invidually miced. Continue to post great videos !! You rule !

  • Steve....you're THE man!

  • Very cool!

  • Nice set...although you could make a $49.00 "Cool Beat Elmo" kit rock. Are those the factory heads, or the Emperors? I like the warmth of the hybrid wood shells. Great job!

  • awesome drumming man!

  • Hey did you get my VM the other day?

  • Steve, that was off the hizay! I'm repenting of my drum-lust right now. take care my friend. btw, nice lockout.

    "PHOENIX ftw!"

    ~ chooch

  • Wow, those drums sure sound sweet. They're easily my #1 "dream kit" atm! Great playing also Steve. It's always great to see the drums being played in such a musical way like this. Drum lessons plz ^_^

  • Wow!!!! Can I have drum lessons from you? You are an incredible drummer. Those drums sound amazing btw.

  • You might want to try putting some duct tape on the tom mount just to give it a little extra something...

  • Greeat man! So fluid and articulated...

  • Thanks for making this video Steve. Great sounding drums.
