Dele Abiodun for most of his musical career remained an ally of Sunny Ade against the ever- present antagonists such as Emperor Pick Peter. His strength lies in his indepth use of street-wise proverbs, most times with caustic taste against his enemies.Strange enough, he came from a part of Edo-state where Yoruba is not spoken.Yet, he is able to carve a niche for himself in the pantheon of Yoruba Juju hierarchy .
Remember the tussle between Dele Abiodun & Pick Peters. The duo, for me, came up with their best output during this period. Spellbinding music. @groovemaster many thanks for sharing.
I don't speak the Yoruba language but have always enjoyed Dele Abiodun music more than all others. Please pardan me his beats and arrangement are mesmerizing
Dele Abiodun cannot be crowned the king of juju music simply because sunny ade was by far a better singer, dancer and guitarist and his songs had a resonance which A.D.A took his influence from.
IK Dairo MBE, Adeolu Akinsanya Baba Eto, Baba Musicians ni won je,
Sunny Ade, Ebenezer Obey omo Fabiyi, Prince Adekunle nko, Dele Abiodun, Younger Musicians ni won je. Sir Shina Adewale, YOUNGEST Musicians? Youngest musicians........
DELE ABIODUN will always be remembered as one of the BEST JUJU Musicians in the history, no matter those ancient rhethoric of elements such as PICK PETERS etc. May be I shouldn't have mentioned Pick Peters's name. But what the heck, I am N-A-I-J-A-N-I-S-T-A-N.
Dele to me was a very unique juju musician of his era, Sunny and Obey were more established because they were there before him, legendary before he came along, his composition and arrangements incomparable to those two, not necessary superior to them but not inferior either, he managed to carve his own space between the two pillars without fear of being crushed
His album after this one was actually better; like Sunny Ade Abiodun would gestate for a time and emerge with a concept album, which would yield another 2 or 3. This was the concept, the one that followed was the peak of prominence. But "Super 5" is rare to come by. I saw him in performance early in his career: very intense and like Sunny Ade, a teetotaller, at least for some time. His lead talking drummer once explained to me some of the proverbs here when this album came out. Imagine that!
Dele Abiodun, correctly spelt; third force in the juju music hierarchy of the Sunny Ade-Ebenezer Obey generation. His especial gift is arrangement, but he also introduced the gong-agogo ensemble, a range of about six gongs where it used to be one or two. Not as talented as Obey and Sunny Ade as a composer, but Dele Abiodun will liven up an old tune or folk song beyond the pale of ordinary familiarity. He is a more reassuring voice now that the younger generation has gone haywire with so little.
I have more Dele Abiodun that I'll post later. I really like this piece. It's raw and compelling. I wish I could have seen Abiodun and his band live in a club in Lagos. Those must have been some great nights.
