This is why they have test groups for pilots. The producers really know what they are doing. Not only did they cast perfectly for this show, their music director deserves a GIANT raise. I found a great unknown band thanks to this group(Shirock). They are one of the most underrated bands I have heard.

Wow this seems so different from how the show is now. I can't imagine the show without Matthew Rhys and Sally Field. Also, it looked like Kevin was supposedly previously married with a kid. All I can say is I'm glad they changed it because I love the show how it is now!

i'm so happy they took the direction that they did. I don't like the idea that Kevin had a wife previously with a child. And i don't like the person playing the mother. Sally Field plays an amazing role...thank god they chose her. Also i love Matthew as Kevin too......

I Personally wish the whole show was like season one. The emotion was so real as were the storylines. Still a great show- but a different show then it was.

@crazyhysterical I have to say I wouldn't have minded the Kevin having a son, Kevin's lonely bachelor plotlines always irked me-however the show wouldn't be the same without Matthew Rhys. And don't even get me started on how vital Sally Field is! So glad they recast the actors :)

I am glad they went with Sally Field. Nothing against Betty Buckley, but Sally brings a whole nother level of esteem and class to the show, along with Rachel Griffiths. I like Matthew Rhys much better than the other guy too.

Completly IMO, but I think the "divorced gay guy with a kid" thing would have been DREADFUL. Seriously, I have seen that to many times on TV and in movies. I'm glad they went with the "Out gay man, not closet stories" thing, it's so refreashing!

(I'll mention it as many have before me,the recasts...so great! Don't know if I'd be a B&S fan if they hadn't, but luckily I didn't have to find out.)

I like it the way it is... i think this would have worked as well but its different in that many gay characters end up having this past and people they have hurt whilst figuring their sexuality out.

In this instance he's already out, its all done and dusted and though there were a few issues with the dad, this was different from other shows where you end up, at the very least, having a girlfriend involved.

Sally Field is a good actress, but in B&S there's no room for restraint. She's so histrionic and so over the top it's a distraction. I would like to have seen what grace Betty Buckley could have brought. Matthew Rhys is a terrible actor and his and Scottie's romance is as cold as a dead fish. Again, I wonder how good it could have been with a talented actor in the role (I have no idea who this guy is so I can't comment on how good or not he'd be).

It's too bad B&S is merely a bad, absurd soap.

Seeing this pilot episode makes me realize why some series never get picked up. I first watched the show because they advertised Sally Field but I stayed loyal and a huge fan because of Matthew Rhys. He is brilliant and the whole cast work so well together. Looking forward to next season.

Wow, they really made a great decision in recasting the show. This version would've been cancelled pretty quickly! It just shows how much Sally Field adds to the show. Dropping the Kevin storyline was another good call.

Nope. Betty Buckley only filmed the pilot. Her character's name was Iva (instead of Nora) and she tested poorly at the test screenings. Jonathan LaPaglia wasn't comfortable playing gay lawyer Kevin, so also had to recast and rework his character.
