where is that you go to shop for parts for a inline 6 ....and another thing I see the type it air filter you have that kind I wish to put on my car but I'm trying to figure out what is an additional filter that on the valve cover if you can get back to me on that I would appreciate it
nice moter..does chevy make a 225? and i have a inline 6 GM industrial in my gleaner K combine and i need a intake manafold wher do you git your parts from?
@captainchaos105 Hey captain, I have GM 250 SB carb w/modified head and i also installed a 268H compcam, CRT HEi and will install dual exhuast soon. I want to convert over to a regular head one day.
I am wondering where you set your timming and idle sounds great.
What cam do you have in your six? Have you ever had trouble with the cam gear sliding off the cam and letting the cam walk and wear the gear out on the distributor?
whats mileage like on the 250? i want to put something with better mileage in my el camino (its got a 305 right now, so i wont really be missing much.)
i have a chevy 250. what parts do i need and where can i find mounting brackets, pulleys and kits for a chevy 250 so i can put on a supercharger some sort on there. Any help would be appreciated.
I think thats to much carberetor i doubt that engine pulls enough CFM for that that is a 390? right? i think thats the smallest 4barrel or the smallest ive seen in holly
@DRNEGOLICIS its the same carb that was recommended by tom lowe at 12 bolt.com. He also does stuff to increase the in flow with the lump high flow kits. I just bought a complete head for my straight six project from him. I'm still looking for a holly 390 thats cheap enough. I also hear the quadrajet rochester is a good one too? What do you recommend between the two?
@marktse so your saying you have a bigger head on it to accept this kind of flow? i was kinda puzzled on how you fabbed that intake to bolt up to the holly too im not sure what the smallest 4 barrel rochester makes the smallest ive seen is the 750 Q jet my truck used to have an 850 i swaped for a 650 holly and went from 7mpg at best with no power (with the Qjet) to 13city and 18highway MPG with tons of power it would even burn the tires in every gear with the holly
@DRNEGOLICIS i just bought his complete head upgrade part from 12bolt.com I haven't even put it on. I am looking for a solution to put a 4 barrel rochester on it. I was looking at the clifford intake to bolt on but it says you also need their clifford exhaust manifold in conjunction. I hear its better than the offy. i am starting to get frustrated with this inline six build. I may rip it out and let it sit until parts fall in my lap from trade shows. of course any advice would be appreciated
@DRNEGOLICIS thats awesome. I think i will go with a holly now. Can you tell me about what intake you went with? Also did you use a special transmission to get that kind of fuel economy? I hear if you get an adapter for a manual six speed and get better fuel economy? Right now i have a 3 on the tree and its very limited.
@marktse mines got a 350 stock intake and if i had to guess i bleive they are 205 heads? the biggest ones made stock behind it is a SM465 rock crusher tranny and behind that is a dayna rear axle not sure what series it has a 5.13 to 1 gear ratio in all its a 3 speed with granny low in last gear it turns around 4000RPM to go 70 the truck is all stock except for the carb 650 holly only other thing is it has single exhaust with one glass pack
@DRNEGOLICIS this maybe a dumb idea but can i buy cheap chevy 250 that was manufactured in the 1980s that have a fuel injector and bolt those parts directly on my old chevy 250?
I had a 250 that sounded like this, stock manifold into 2.5 inch exhaust with an 18in" glasspack, and severe overfueling in origional Rochester single barrel. It also had a single black wagon wheel from the amount of carbon and spit fire going downhill in gear lol. Pulled like a train in a 1969 Chevy truck, but stock, severe overfuel, and advanced timing made it get around 6mpg and it has bad rings so it uses oil, i think it wants to be a diesel. Needs a rebuild bad, but it's for sale cheap!
@panzerkampfwagen123 A cam with tons of lift won't make a engine lope like that its all in the duration. They have what I call show cams, they have moderate lift nothing major but have alot of duration. You start getting a lope at around 270 degrees of duration and that real mean lope around 280 degrees
I had this engine in an 86 Chevy van here in UK ( cargo van )( it was a factory right hand drive ). Superb engine -super reliable , nothing goes wrong with them. Better than a V8 and not bad mpg. It had done 240000 when we parted with it with no major trouble at all ( never any problems with the engine ). Got a diesel Savana now.
NICE MAN! I got a chevy 250 in my 69 Buick Special Deluxe (Skylark pretty much). Looking at putting a new intake with a Rochester Quadrajet and dual exhaust on it and maybe cam it up if I have to.
@snowman4839 you don't want a Quadrajet you want a little 390cfm Holley,Most people don't know it but most quadrajets are 750cfm and the others for big engines are 800cfm. The reason they work on 305s and othe small engines is their design kinda allows them to only use the cfm the need but I still wouldn't trust it on a 250 but then again I'm no Quadrajet expert because when I beef up fuel induction use other brands
@2soccerfreak2 your better off with a V8 they even bolt to the stock monts with Jeg adaptors. Reason a L6 isn't a good idea is because they are so long your have serious radiator and fan problems
I had a 1970 Nova with this engine. It was connected to the 2 speed power slip er I mean power glide tranny. Sticker price: $2966.50. I got it for $2450.
A dude I went to high school with his first car was a old Nova with the 250, He tore the motor out as soon as he bought it thinking he had a 350 lined up for it nope he tore down the 250 and put 12:1's inside and the result was exactlly what this engine sounds like. The most impressive thing about his car was it could light the rear tires up without even trying, you didnt have to rev it up like a stock 350. It had massive amounts of torque in the low end.
okay....we did this on my bro's 74 vette...wherever the headers end and connect to the next component of the exhaust system, take so washers and put them on the bolts that connect those two parts...more washers you put on the bigger the gap in the exhaust, the louder the sound. It will sound pretty nice(my bro's vette has a pretty nice cam)but even without a cam you can sorta make it sound like it....you will have a really cool semi-muffled and semi-open headers...GOOD LUCK!!!
that's usually called an exhaust leak and any exhaust coming out that far forward can cause carbon monoxide buildup in the cabin on a long trip and possibly cause you to pass out or get sick from C-O poisoning. Escaping flames and little burning pieces of carbon can burn or ignite components or fuel inside the engine compartment, etc. I wouldn't recommend it.
To me I think it would sound like something that needed to be fixed and not really sound good.
@daytonpaul Actually you have brain leak and you are warped. Learn something about engines before you make stupid dumb ass comments about something you know nothing about. Take up something less taxing like taking out the trash or cutting the lawn.
Look for a '74-78 Chevy (Camaro, Nova, pickup... doesn't matter) with the straight-six in it, and snag that distributor. Those are the none-computer controlled versions and will exchange perfectly with the old points-type. Even the later ones with the computer control will work, if you swap the pickup and module out.
Remove your ballast resistor, install a spade-type terminal on the positive wire for the coil, plug it in, and you're done!
@Alisterwolf66 im selling a 77 motor. whole thing for like 75 bucks. has everything including that distributer. call me. only has 104,000 miles on whole motor. reply if interested
those straight 6s are the best engines ever made i had a 69 nova straight six 289,000 miles on it when i sold it theres 1 thing my freind told me his oil pan had a hole in it he drove the car from the city of syracuse auburn and back with no oil and it still ran isnt that crazzy
Sounds Beefy! Six's Are Great. I'm Running A 200 In My 65 Falcon. Dont Quite Have As Much Cam As You But i Managed To Scrounge Up A Dura Spark Unit, And Rebuilt It .030 Over 6x2 Header And A Holley 350 2 bbl. It Screams!
The 454 has a 4.25 bore the 250 has a 3.87 this is .30 over bringing it to 4.17. Yes it can be bored to fit a 4.25 piston. That I am aware of with proper machine work you can also obtain a 4 inch stroke in the 250. The 292 has a 4.12 stroke. So basically yes you can achieve the same bore and stroke but not the same displacement.
The engineers were ingenious by placing the exhaust on the same side of the intake because the exhaust heats the intake up alowing for a better burn. On a V8 the water from the radiator flows through the intake and heats it up, unlike the six cylinder. Thats why they are such a cold natured engine.

otherwise longest running engine I have ever used.
Outlander11 3 years ago
The engineers were ingenious by placing the exhaust on the same side of the intake because the exhaust heats the intake up alowing for a better burn. On a V8 the water from the radiator flows through the intake and heats it up, unlike the six cylinder. Thats why they are such a cold natured engine.

on a chevy v8 the exhaust heats up the intake by the exhaust crossover. Ford and Chrysler are the same way.
