@drjakim YES!!!! metronome is a necessity!! dont cut corners, start at 5 bpm if you have to!! youre only hurting yourself if you cut corners in guitar

@CitySkateboards metronomes aren't an absolute necessity. They are very useful tools and everyone should try using one, but there are other methods which are just as helpful that may even be better depending on your learning style.

alternate picking or directional? i've heard tom uses directional but i keep reading things about how it's "incorrect". i really like players like paul gilbert and the incredible playing of malmsteen and i think they use alternate.

I know that malmsteen uses alternative picking and he also uses alot of string skipping as quite a few virtuosos use.
