I throw old oil filters into standing water ditches around my house. I do this to contoll mosquitos.  It's a great way to recycle used oil filters. Will used ink catridges do the same job if I bust them open first.

Good idea, but I too am not in the US. Here (and probably in the USA) there are stores that you can take your empty cartridges to and get them refilled.

To be honest their are a lot of Ink cartridges that you can re-use just by going to any place where they may sell printers and they can re-fill them for a very low cost

That's what we do.

I think that would be a better way to look at it instead of worrying about recycling it and having to spend money again on a new one.

I know recycling is good for the environment, not against it all but instead of spending money to buy a new one just buy one that is re-fillable

@Agent1W A 3 color ink kit + black can run from $35.00 - 50.00 bucks and will refill your cartridge 5 or so times. Usually the cartridge will degrade and get gummed up before you can use all the ink up.

I just take mine to Staples. They used to give you $3.00 off your order for every cartridge you brought in. Then it was $3.00 back in Staples Rewards. Now they've lowered it to $2.00 back in rewards. Still the most convenient way to recycle them, though. Beats mailing them back to the cartridge company so they can refurbish it and make money reselling it without you getting a penny.
