The Beriev 200 ( Be-200) is not bild originatly to fight forest fires but is a passenger plane converted. Not to bust any bubble but this plane like any passenger plane, it's slow to respond. takes of long time to fill up, so you need a very large water body. The demo made in Portugal a few years ago failed( they actualy hit tree tops and set them on fire). In California they use cl215 and cl415. wich have a exelent record , much lower maintenance cost, and THEY have parts in sotck , Russia ....

The time of the Amphib should never cease. The Japanese and Canada as well as other countries still build them. I wish the U.S.C.G. would pull its ass out of its head and get them back. They can be unbeatable in some rescues as they can search for much longer periods than a helo and carry more rescue gear. Thats why their still being built today. I say this as a frmr. C.G. AD3 "Ol, Goat: flt.Mech. The Falcon20 as a replacement was a joke!!!

The US Government now OPERATES over 100 Russian aircraft of various types, and the experiences held by thousands of Americans who fly and maintain both helicopter and fixed wing aircraft are making those mental icebergs melt away. My company is planning to import the planes and I just set up a channel to promote positive thinking on the subject.

A flying boat uses it's hull for primary flotation, has no retractable landing gear and can take off and land only on the water. It has no pontoons other than possible outriggers on the wings for stabilization It comes ashore when beaching gear is attached to the fuselage. Amphibians, on the other hand can take off and land on the water using the hull or pontoons for floatation or retractable landing gear for takeoff and landing on land.

Cool looking aircraft. When So California is on fire, the only water is in the ocean waves,. It's salty and corrosive. Really bad for aircraft. They don't last long if used often like that. I have read that only on flat forests, grass plains or steppes are these an advantage (Russia). The tight mountain conditions where the U.S. fires are,.. different story.

The positioning speed is a nice feature although I'm not sure I'd like a family of ducks to to have a go at those engines while scooping. I don't think Canadair is in any huge danger of losing sales, apart from the usual backhanders that can always make a few deals here and there.

Russia likes the Red, White and Blue. 'Martin' liked the versatility of a 'flying Boat' and built many protypes over the years. He saw the need way ahead of anyone else. I live in State of New Mexico, southwest USA. When we have droughts, forest fires are common. Dozens of 'Tankers' fly over my house at 15 minute intervals. They return to the airbase for 'retardant mix'. Few are jet powered. Most radial piston 2 and 4 engine, some turbo prop. Danger flying in high elevation mountains and tight canyons are where, mostly human caused, fires burn. We 'slowly learn' let some fires burn to eliminate underbrush so future fires are not so hot and kill the trees.
