Don't complain about the rules!!! If someone don't like it, if somebody don't like to pay...well shut up a go somewhere else where is for free.
We are in for 2009 and we are from Czech Republic and believe me it is 3times harder to make money for the rally then in UK, I know I worked in UK for over two years...1workingmonth in UK = 3-4workingmonth in Czech
I hear that that! A friend and I were looking at the 2010 rally, but don't think we'll make it until 2011 because being from Canada it'll cost use nearly twice what a UK/Euro team pays... not to mention that virtually no one over here has even heard of the Mongol Rally before, which makes it a hard sell to sponsors and other supporters.
Was there for the start of 2008 and have a spot for 2009. 650 pound is nothing. Ask anyone that's had the balls to do it. They'd pay it and more. Sounds like davethebarn's a bit of a bitch. Let the mayhem begin
Mongolian guys are tough. If they're see this movie maybe they will do something next "Mongol Rally" you idiots. They are really tough. Recently they have killed 8 European(1 English,3 French, 3 German, 1 Italian) guys.
I cant believe theyre chargin £650 for 2009. This aint for charity, these guys are making big money. The Charity Rallies offer is for £150 so I'm looking at them.
anyone seen the new rule. no cars over 10 years old. WTF? Apparently the mongolian government dont want older cars being auctioned off. Is this the beginning of the end for the rally? A few years down the road it'll just be a load of corporate guys in discoveries doing it.
I think that you are overstating the worst case scenario. It is, after all, perfectly reasonable of the Mongols to not want their country to have a few hundred near-wrecks plopped on it every year.
Still, I think that there should be a new formula for the rally. A 1.6 litre limit for the engines would suffice. Autotrader lists over 1000 10 year old cars within that, at less than a 1000 quid each, but only 40-ish at 1 litre or lower.
Of course, one could have a there and back again rally...
i just think it is going to lose some of the charm it once had. besides, the near wrecks we drive are probably luxury vehicles compared to what they are driving out there. You can get cars right now very cheap but its going to be pretty boring with all the unimaginative post-1999 fiestas and corsas.
@davethebarn Big money? Nah! You get a lot for that entry fee and the publicity is massive which is how they've raised several times more cash for charity. Besides, the Mongol Rally is not advertised as a charity rally anyway, The Adventurists pretty much play that aspect down (and then raise millions anyway ;p )
£650 for 2009! What a ripoff! Can't believe how these guys are milking it. My brothers on the rally this year and says charity rallies do it for £150.
My brothers doing it this year look out for videos in the next month their team is called the suicide badgers and there driving the pink passion wagon.
yea, i emailed the organisers about it, and its a totally s**t rule but something the mongol government said had to happen because of environmental issues - but something tells me that mongols arnt all driving around in hybrids! I was going to do it in 2 pug 106's from the early 90's.
good vid...thanks

I'm sure you could do the rally in an older car, just not be able to sell/give away it in Mongolia.
