Charlize deserved that oscar and there has yet to be a performance as good as this since! just stunning. I felt for her! i cried for about 10 minutes straight at the end of the film.
My god I cannot believe how this movie glorified this nut-job. She was a heinous murderer who tried to use her sob story as an excuse for killing seven men. And because she was a woman, her story about 'self-defense' was eaten up by all of these media hungry clowns.
"Love conquers all." "Every cloud has a silver lining." "Faith can move mountains." "Love will always find a way." "Everything happens for a reason." "Where there is life, there is hope."
You know..some people deserve death penalties but Aileen certainly did not. She had a rubbish childhood and it's not like she killed innocent people like some serial killers, she killed old sick perverts. And Charlize Theron played her perfectly, R.I.P AW
Although I did like this film it is only very loosely based on the story of Aileen Wuornos and alot of people dont seem to realise that. I'm doing my thesis on her and there is so much more to her story than this film tells, quite simply we will never know the truth about her because she has changed her story so many times over. I'm not saying she didnt have a terrible childhood I believe she actually did but there are people who have been through that and even worse and have never killed.
i dont understand that Aileen was killed in the end but a REAL sadistic Monster like Theresa Knorr, who killed her both daughters in the worst way just got 25 years???? how fucked up is that whole shit??
I'm a guy and could never be so cruel as to put a woman through such pain or imagine one of my sisters being forced to lead a life as such. I really do feel for this woman and many in similar situations. It is a fucked up world we live in.
People do realise this is open to interpretation being a film, it is very biased towards aileen, she shouldn't be looked at as a martyr of anykind, she used bullshit covers of rape to kill and rob she was an evil bitch and got what she deserved. Its unbelievable how easily people are manipulated, judging by the comments and likes on this page, scares the shit out of me.
You feel empathy for Aileen, but when you see other documentaries on her, you get to witness her confession of how she lied in court about being raped. The only thing I feel bad about, when it comes to her, is that she cannot tell the truth.
I remember the first time I saw this movie. My cousin who is a lesbian noted that Charlize Theron was the epitome of beauty. Her portrayal of Aileen should have earned an Oscar. Aileen started off a victim as so many people do. I do believe that she, at some point, lost herself growing up. Think of how traumatic it would be to have to live life in her shoes. Aileen was shown no love throughout her life and was always looked down on. Who are we to judge anyone. RIP Aileen.
I haven't seen Monster (I saw the documentaries), so I have no idea what Charlize Theron and the filmmakers did to generate the "empathy" some of the people have expressed here, but clearly it worked!
Regardless of whether Wuornos was born or made, she was a pathological liar, a homicidal maniac, and a dangerously broken human being.
@carbongiant callously claims that her victims were "dispatched quickly". The State of Florida did the same to put her out of her life-long misery.
This movie is so sad. The first killing scene was absolutely disturbing and inhumane, I don't blame her for killing the first guy,he deserved it and that WAS self defense, some of the other killings were unnescessary and wrong,.. And the ending is very sad.

@Galantski Exactly! I for one am sick and tired of Hollywood 'humanizing' these killers, which usually means that they are really innocents with a heart of gold. She wasn't. She KNEW that she was doing something wrong and I beg people to remember one thing, that she was a psychotic and psychotics can tell you all sorts of things to justify what they do. Aileen was a bad seed from the start and she was NEVER raped by a client. This is why I am not watching any of this movie.
@koolowolf a lot of ppl have had bad childhoods. but thats just an excuse. aileen was responsible for her own actions. u can take the horse to the water but u cant make it drink.
there we go then. alot of ppl have had bad childhoods but they dont all decide to kill ppl. if the ppl she killed tried to rape her then good ridance, but they couldn't have all been bad. great movie though. i know someone who was raped, beaten and slept on the streets yet she didn't go down the route aileen did. she got married, had kids and moved on. i shit you not.
Well I do sympathize with her for getting the shaft from mother nature, but I'm sorrier for her victims, killed for no good reason, except the first guy, who was killed in self-defense.
Only in America ............................. clearly damaged from childhood, unable to cope, in capable of remaining normal, she suffers abuse all her life, kills and is killed.
There is no hope. There is no compassion or understanding shown. She's an easy target for the state to crush.
I feel deeply sadened by the tale of her life and am grateful it's not mine. I have a chance. She had none.
The victims were dispatched quickly. She suffered all her life.
@javydavy543 The entire country goes on about how great they are? Sounds like a stereo type that you latch on to in an attempt to feel superior. The Irony. You should go ahead and proclaim your superiority so that the bullshit can circumnavigate the globe.
@carbongiant You put it so compassionately, but the other side to this, which I am sure you know, is that the families of the victims who were "dispatched quickly" desrve compassion, and understanding also. This is a tremendously sad situation, but the law is the law. Tyria or someone should have gotten her mental health, which is available to all florida residents, insured or not. Its called the Baker Act. Maybe this opened the eyes of men to the dangers of prostitutes.
@carbongiant lol you say that but the U.S. keeps their death sentence inmates better than their regular inmates, ever been in a mexican prison i have and guess what it wasn't fun, they made what she went through look like a cake walk
@cheekypants321 ten years of eating good food in a comfortable cell when she was living in a trailer while working as a hooker, she lived way better for however long she was on death row than she did her whole life
@carbongiant oh really? You must have never heard of the woman in china who wrote her story in her own blood while in prison. She was eventually executed for speaking out against the government.
@carbongiant Only in America. Yeah, I guess all the world's killers hail from the USA, huh? Undeucated, hollier than thou prick. Maybe she's a hero, and an inspiration to you, but the movie was aptly named. Only in America? Fuck you.
This is so different from the real thing - in reality she just walked out accompanied by a guard and gave the judge the finger. She was a lot more badass. She also did not look half as haggard looking like in the movie.
This movie breaks my fuckin heart, every single time, I feel so much empathy for Aileen Wuornos . you can’t help but feel lucky to not have went through that, sure she killed, and that is wrong, but imagine for a split second what she went through, I would have killed these people myself if that happened to me. Too many women live in fear, being battered , raped, by brothers, fathers, uncles, strangers.R.I.P Aileen. Also wanted to state how fantastic Charlize Theron portrayed the role of Aileen
@killthedisco20 I agree with you so much. I mean i feel bad for the men she klled (save the freak who raped her) but she had such a shitty life. EVERYONE used her. I feel so sad for her and the end scene makes me sad. I cant help but feel sorry for her.
@killthedisco20 even though she admitted there was no self defense involved in any of the killings she just did it to get money yeah that poor poor woman how dare they make her become a hooker and murder people how dare the system do that to this poor woman
@killthedisco20 Her suffering doesn't justify the killing of another human being im sorry. Im sure there are women who have gone through those experiences if not worse, you don't see them running around trying to hurt or kill those who hurt them do ya? Im sure they would like too but they are not. Im pretty sure you wouldn't go around killing people either at least you yourself have the decency to show empathy for someone who clearly deserves none.
I don't think people should feel bad for Aileen, but empathy. She was a deeply troubled person, who was mentally unstable and believed that all her John's were going to rape her,she deserved to die for what she did, BUT that doesn't mean I can't look at her with empathy, it's really depressing that her life was as horrible as it was, I truly wish she was able to turn her life into something positive. That being said, Charlize's performance is, in my opinion, the BEST acting performance ever.
This film is so brilliant but so heartbreakin at the same time.......u can't help but feel a little sorry 4 Aileen........Charlize Theron won an oscar 4 the portrayal of Aileen in this movie and it was thoroughly deserved.......The resemblance was truly amazin from the way she looked in the movie 2 her movements and emotions!! I really really enjoyed this movie and the endin would make the hardest of men cry their eyes out!!
i can understand why she shouldn't have been sent to death because of the rape, but she killed at least 5 other people without her life being put in jeopardy... she told the judge she wanted to die when there was a appeal on her sentencing
I think they spoiled this scene using montage style...damn it. shouldn't use music and should use zoom camera shooting form judge's point of view or further than that...man...I wish I could shoot this story by myself...its too late though.
Very sad story the....... judge was so fucked up for giving a women death row that was rapped.............that BITCH that snitched her out aint shit ugly BITCH!!! That BITCH know Alieen was killing people she just got scared when the cops got involved, THAT BITCH SNITCH HER OUT...............IF IT WASNT FOR HER ALIEEN WOULD HAVE NEVER WENT BACK ON THE STREETS ..........................................ALL I GOT TO SAY............ IS MAY THAT BITCH THAT RATED ON ALIEEN REST IN HELL WHEN SHE DIE.
@chrisforker57 thats not true. she was once married to a man. if you check her history, she got married to an old man, yet she was physically abusive to him so they got a divorce. tyria, her real lover, also loved her but just did not want to be in prison so Aileen acted selfless and took on all of the blame for the murders that were committed.
The real "Selby Wall" was actually named Tyria Moore and she was twice the size of Aileen. She was fat and huge and that was the bitch that actually sold Aileen out.
If you really want to get the story, watch the 2 documentaries by Nick Broomfield. I can't understand why they changed the dialogue in this conviction scene. If you see the real footage of Aileen Wuornos when the verdict comes down, it is way more complex and you feel both sympathy and mistrust because it is so obvious that she is lying some of the time, yet hard to tell exactly when. The girlfriend was about twice the size of Aileen, so the casting of Cristina Ricci was WAY off.

I believe the film was very objective, but definately leaned towards the sympathetic side of her life. It wasn't "for" murder and prostitution but it definately acknowledged that she had a FUCKED up life and despite her actions, she was a decent woman who seriously got lost in the shuffle.
I, for one, felt extremely sympathetic to her story. The doc done by I forgot who was real good, too. I feel so sorry for her.
This clip should be entitled "The Betrayal" (even though their ENTIRE relationship was sick & wrong...not "wrong" for being gay..."wrong" for being f'd UP from the very beginning...poor Selby had NO IDEA what she was getting herself into. And, Aileen was just FUCKED from day one.)
That look Aileen gives Selby where you know she forgives her gets me every time. That and the voice-over: "Hey, Sel, I'll never forget you". Incredible performance.
Such a sad, sad movie. The death penalty is not wrong though, anyone who kills deserves to be killed, it's that simple. What's wrong is how she's on death row for 12 years.
Its simple, all humans have rights. The rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Sure, she may have suffered through her life without consolation, but murder is murder and you are revoked of all your rights, including life, when you kill another human being because you have taken away their most important right.
I just wonder how Chalize Theron could have so many faces. She is so angelic beautiful thats unbelievable - and so disgusting ugly if she wanted to...and not even need makeup (or not much) neiter to be the best of beauty queens neighter to be the uglyness itself.
about time these so call humans(americans) tried helping these criminals instead of locking them up24hrs aday giving them nothing to do,treating them like animals no wonder they r coming out more violent then when they went in, if they went in a prison sane they sure aint coming out sane, it just goes to prove that their system doesn't work REHABILITATION have they ever heard of that word?even the police are fucking trigger happy they are all bloody corrupt scummy bastards
"Should be analized..."? As in shoved in her ass? Or did you mean analyzed?
I can understand the first killing: Mallory was a known rapist and likely victimized Wuornos but I see the other six murders as nothing more than Wuornos feeding her addictive personality. She found a new high in the power that she felt in killing Mallory and continued killing to experience that feeling again and again.
This wouldn't have happened if the US would just legalize and regulate the sex industry.
in her case it was. but in richard ramirez case it was the only possibility..Police only found out 10 years after Aileen's trial that Mallory - 1º 'murdered' was in fact a raper, accused of other rapes, they should have done another investigation, but those scum bags were just as repugnat as the raper...
@spencerdev91 people like u is why our system is so screwed up & also why our military cant do its job the way it needs 2 be done so in general what your sayn is its alright if some1 trys 2 kill or does kill us but we shouldnt return fire
As a political science major, this fuels my passion to make people like her have other options in life other than the streets, prostitution, and murder. If felons and prostitutes, were given an oppurtunity to clean up and try to have a normal life, I truly believe that this would help prevent her story from happening again inthe future to other prostitutes. Aileen was a victim that killed because of no other option other than to keep being a victim. you can say she had a choice but she doesent
Prostitution will always be a desired service, thaitreat, and there ARE some women who choose this profession.
Things that we identify as crimes in our society (prostitution, drug addiction) are of questionable illegality as they generally create more crimes due to the very fact that they are illegal. A drug user isn't likely to commit a crime if they have their drug of choice and a prostitute isn't in a position to be raped in areas where the sex trade has been decriminalized and regulated.
You're absolutely right and in real life, Aileen Wournos admitted to killing those men in cold blood shortly before her execution and I agree that a bad or abused life does not give anyone the right to murder innocent people... This movie still made me cry like there was no tomorrow LOL I think I was crying for Selby and the fact that the woman she loved was being taken from her, whether it was right or wrong .
I don't believe any one was saying that she was entitled to murder those men. What they are saying is that due to the circumstances of her life and her mental state that the death penalty for this case was questionable. There are interviews that show she clearly was not sane. The same system that executed her as punishment for her crimes failed her when she was the victim. The "monster" was manufactured from years of torture and abuse committed against a defenseless child.
That ending made me angy..the other girl set her up, in real life, a similar thing happened, what a BITCH..Aileen deserved better..all she wanted was justice for being raped and unconditional love..why do people hurt the ones that are good? Aileen was good, she just trusted the wrong woman.
That is name this song? Is beautiful.

there we go then. alot of ppl have had bad childhoods but they dont all decide to kill ppl. if the ppl she killed tried to rape her then good ridance, but they couldn't have all been bad. great movie though. i know someone who was raped, beaten and slept on the streets yet she didn't go down the route aileen did. she got married, had kids and moved on. i shit you not.

Only in America.

Also wanted to state how fantastic Charlize Theron portrayed the role of Aileen
killthedisco20 1 year ago 44
@killthedisco20 I agree with you so much. I mean i feel bad for the men she klled (save the freak who raped her) but she had such a shitty life. EVERYONE used her. I feel so sad for her and the end scene makes me sad. I cant help but feel sorry for her.

@killthedisco20 even though she admitted there was no self defense involved in any of the killings she just did it to get money yeah that poor poor woman how dare they make her become a hooker and murder people how dare the system do that to this poor woman
brokenpk 1 year ago

Such a sad, sad movie. The death penalty is not wrong though, anyone who kills deserves to be killed, it's that simple. What's wrong is how she's on death row for 12 years.
deanriam 1 year ago
Its simple, all humans have rights. The rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Sure, she may have suffered through her life without consolation, but murder is murder and you are revoked of all your rights, including life, when you kill another human being because you have taken away their most important right.

JoyHurt 1 year ago
