That twat said after the fight that it doesnt take any talent to kick in legs. I just dont understand why Roufus lost?! He lost cause american kickboxing is much softer than muay thai. Admit it.It is fighting, not dancing
@cosanostracz the funny thing is the guy that gave the interview at the end went on to become a muay thai champion. i guess he realise he was wrong and now he is one of the best muay thai trainer in america, his name is jeff duke roufus.
The old commentator made a hilarious comment at the end: "Well it seems that the only plan the Thai fighter has is to get in there and drive in those kicks to the leg."
AAAAHAHAHHAA if that's what it takes to win, why not???
Actually, more than the commentators, more than even the two idiots rufus brothers, the thing that really pisses me off is the goddamn ref. I've never seen such a clearly biased ref in my life.
@ephasm True, but I actually thought the commentators were the most annoying part of this fight. From the very beginning, they wanted the American to win... even worse, they really had no idea what they were talking about. I don't think their commentary would have been very good even for an American rules bout, let alone this blended rules match.
@kicksboxes Nah I agree with you there. They were pretty bad but at least halfway through the fight they suddenly realised that roufus was getting killed. Tbh, nobody here knew what was happening. Roufus clearly didn't actually have a clue about thai rules and neither did anyone else except the thais. As a result they didnt clearly specify what was and was not allowed hence why the ref had to stop every single round and check details. Roufus even claimed he was fighting them on their rules
@kicksboxes There was commentary in this? All I heard was a bunch of housewives talking about someone getting untill it got to a point where I had to turn off the sound just to enjoy the awesome fight. I have to admit though that ref is probably better at taking are of kids in a daycare than doing this kind of job.
Did ya ever hear such shite as what those two American clowns were talking. Kietsongrit is not used to being hit like this and he's kicking the living crap out of Roufus. Are they blind? American kickboxing got a lesson on NOT to go into the ring with a Thai Boxer. Roufus did what he could but he had no business in there.
Jeff "Duke" Roufus basically badmouths Muay Thai. "It doesn't take too much talent to kick the legs." Yes it does, and it's far more damaging than fancy jumping kicks.
To Duke and Rick's credit, both brothers renounced their bias over the years and have embraced Muay Thai in their training. Just goes to show, people can change over time.
Changpuek kaitsongrit had a field day there. A perfect example of what happens if you don't block these lowkicks. Kaitsongrit is one of the greatest Thai fighters ever. he fought a lot of fights above his own weight. I'm sure Roufus had a bad time walking for at least 2-3 weeks. This fight is the exact reason whyRofous did not take the fight against Kaman with lowkicks.
@mokumnised he had a hard time walking for a lot longer than that lol. This fight basically was the beginning of the end for him due to a spiral fracture he picked up in his leg in this fight.
In recent weeks pro-democracy protests have turned violent in Bangkok. Our thoughts of peace and safety go out to all of our Thai Brothers and Sisters as we hope for a peaceful resolution to the situation there.
Let us fight only in the ring and live to promote respect, freedom, and happiness for our world.
he thought like typical American then, but then everyone can change.we are all part of the world.think about Iran ,North Korea.they do have their own systems.they are not Evil people.just different.
All these Vegas mofos were straight up Roufus dick riders. You notice the point deductions? from 2 then a second later 3 points? WTF! Then the ref was stalling for Roufus to recover! You shud be 8 counting! No skill? Your boy just cant be in a real fight! Bill Wallace aint no doctor either, diagnosis? HE GOT FUCKED UP!
rick roufus went on to win a k1 title.master toddi out of vegas trained him.muy thai is no joke, those low kicks hurt like hell. Its a great fighting art all about what works nothing fancy.
Some pretty sour grapes from Jeff Roufus at the time. I guess he saw the light eventually as he turned to MT. I wonder how he felt years later calling MT technique "no talent".
sigh...silly kickboxers...cant seem to accept the truth. I love the comment about the "no talent" and "we tought we won the fight" or "we cant fight under these rules" by Jeff, dude was dizzier than his broken brother. and these were not full muay thai rules, if it were then Roufus wudda been escorted by a hearse.
Really? I've never seen a traditional MT fighter use the side kick. Turning your body to throw the side kick exposes your hamstring to your opponent's roundhouse and is INCREDIBLY painful! (you only make that mistake once or twice before you learn to face those kicks directly... otherwise you end up looking like Rufus in this fight!)
@kicksboxes just a quick jab with the foot, almost as if it's a teep kick, just with a little more thrust. recover with a quick retraction by sucking the knee and hips back, again almost like a teep.
Roufus brothers now using Muaythai to advance in their career. Thanks to them that have the guts to change. If they can change so can U.[i stole that from .....]
its funny that duke roufus is saying that it dosent take much talent to kick someone in the leg and that rick roufus is much more skilled because he can throw spin kicks and silly shit but if you see him now hes all about muay thai and he even sells dvds that teach how to kick to the legs but i havent seen him teach a spin kick in any of his dvds lol.. but rick roufus did get better at fighting that style as the years went on but it took this to open his eyes
yeah i've actually read this interview with duke roufus years after his post-fight interview here and after training for years in muay thai (with kongnapa among others) he says he retracts his comments about muay thai leg kicks.
that white guy? for one that's his brother duke roufus and while his comments were ignorant you're the one sounding like a chode here man and white people didn't steal muay thai, it's a very good (if not best) stand up fighting style so...it's implemented in mma. white people AMONG pretty much every other ethnicity utilizes muay thai.
and then to say , ''the thais wont fight our rules and we wont fight theres'' hang on mate, no elbows, no knees, no clinch, so basicly kickbxing rules then, so the thais will fight you faggy rules, the arrogance of the americans is unbeliveable, still wont admit that they were beaten, cos what ever they didnt invent aint worth knowing apparently, they make me sick
kickboxing man at the end'' i dont think it takes much talent to kick somebody in the leg, as you saw them jumping spinning kicks that rick was throwing, and all that defencive ability, i think thats real talent''not much defencive ability then ey and the so called tallented fights lies on the floor crying like a 5 year old girl
I spoke with Duke (who became a very solid leg kicker) years later and asked him about his comments. He was astoundingly gracious and said that he basically had an epiphany. He realized that his brother had just gotten taken apart by a pretty simple tool and that he better learn that tool.
Both Roufus brothers are a credit to the fight game. Tough, HARD WORKING, Fearless and absolute gentlemen.
Thanks for the comment! A lot of people see this OLD fight and assume the worst about these fighters. Jeff's comments are a part of his history and, unfortunately inescapable.
However, Duke now owns the most successful MT school in the Midwest U.S. and also promotes authentic MT kickboxing competitions.
I think it takes great courage to learn from our mistakes and grow from them.
the MT fighter is not that great.Roufus was a stupid fighter in this fight. The MT fighter got KO'd by Ernesto Hoost and Branco Cikatic badly. Both fights are on youtube. He simply fought someone here who was a silly 'stylish' fighter!
It's great to see how the American attitude in the industry change since the time of this fight. Roufus had little knowledge in MT then and he fought a world class Muay Thai fighter like Changpuek, there was only one outcome. The Roufuses were young but still, they can't erase the dumb shit they did and said. Look at people comparing MT to other fighting styles. Why not just say a skilled boxer can't handle kickboxing cause he's not trainned in kicking?
Just because Changpuek trainned in Muay Thai doesn't mean he can't fight in the street. Actually, his conditioning and power he trainned for would be his advantage.
I get your point, but let's be fair, this video is well over 15 years old now. While the announcers were a bit racist, and the Roufus brothers were a bit naive, the fact remains that Americans soon learned to embrace muay thai. Now days, every mixed martial artist studies muay thai to improve their standing game. While mistakes were made in the past, we can still learn and grow together.
I'm I die hard muay thai nuthugger. I've probably spent a hundred hours watching muay thai fights on you tube and various dvd's. I've had ten thai boxing fights and am a ccertified thai boxing instructor. The more I watch this fight, the more I respect Rick Roufus - He took a complete beating and refused to give up. I gaurantee you, had roufus spent as many years training thai boxing as opposed to training his western kickboxing, he would've been a great challange for changpuek
You are absolutely right, I do agree with you. Meantime while many mma artists are studying muaythai, we(thais) are studying grapplings and ground work too. Some thais learn bjj ,judo or others and few thais know that we still have one of old style muaythai of which consists of strikings, grapplings and ground work blended together ,we are trying to conserve this muaythai and teach thais to be able to join mma matches near future.
Thanks; You bring up a good point Siamyuth, it's important to keep the traditions of traditional martial arts while also learning to evolve. As much as I love mma, I also love to watch the stand up fighting skills of muaythai. The most important thing is to learn from one another and continue to improve. It's funny, but by fighting against one another in the ring, our cultures may actually become closer and more peaceful. At least I hope.
Correct me if I am wrong, as I knew the name" full contact karate" had been used before the name" kick boxing" and finally it was changed to be the later name what
Dumb-ass, as kicksboxes mentions this was YEARS ago. Most kickboxing fights allow leg kicks and fighters know how to defend them as opposed to just getting nailed over and over. You don't see people saying "hey, tough guy Thai can't handle a wrestler, they'd get taken down and pounded like a little kid." Besides, in a REAL fight you will only get a chance to throw a couple leg kicks if at all...leg kicks are best for sport unless you are Tang Po from the Kickboxer movie ;)
lmao not much talent to throw leg kicks? wtf is this redneck muay thai? lmaooo, just because its flashy and looks good, you know those spinning backfist/back kicks, doesnt mean its effective like low leg kicks
it doesn't take too much talent to kick to the legs??? hahahahahahahahahahah. that's funny. if roufous had so much talent and if it doesnt take much talent to kick to the legs then roufous should've been kicking kietsongrit in the legs cuz he have a lot of talent. and they said they fought under thai rule..that's not even thai rule.
Rick was niave...just like all the idiot stand-up fighters when they walked into UFC 1. Muay Thai is only good standing up, and most Thais have no fucking idea how to grapple (how many Thais fight in the UFC and others?). Maurice Smith would STILL smash any Muay Thai guy right now cuz he'd have enough defense to handle their kicks and kness and then take em down...then BYE BYE tough Muay Thai fighter.
umm actually YES muay thai fighters know alot about grappling its called Bokator....read up on thai culture and styles of fight before u talk...and Asians in generall dnt usually fight in the UFC cuz they need a special card that costs a shit load to fight in the states wich is just not worth it
I am well aware of Bokator but I also know that most Thai fighters do nothing but Muay Thai in their training. That's like saying every American knows how to wrestle.
There have been fighters from Thailand that have come into the states (and Japan) to fight MMA and although their stand-up is awesome they are usually lacking on the ground.
Fighters come from all over the world to fight in the UFC, Dream, etc. That's total BS to say they cant come to the US to fight. be real, man.
ahh poor kick boxing fag got smashed all over the ring thats what happens when you fuck with muay thai, bet he wasnt walking for fucking weeks, what an arognt american cunt thinking he could take on a real thai fighter an win, commentators are still sucking his dick all the way to the end
That stupid moron from Roufus' side said it didn't take a lot of talent to kick to a leg. I say, it doesn't take a lot of brain to say such bullshit. 'Cause it takes lots of hard work and training to learn how to kick to a leg like that.
Hey Showhum, if you live in Milwaukee you should check out some of 'Duke' Roufus's fights at the Eagle's Club. There's usually some world-class fighters there and good times. I don't think they allow elbows but knee kicks are legal. The fights are very authentic with Thai music played during the rounds. Check them out... it might even get you to change your mind about "pussy" American fighters.
While watching this video I realized that I was rooting for the thai because im asian, but after a while I started to reflect on why I wasn't rooting for rick. Once I got over the subconscious hatred I felt was caused by racist van damme and rambo movies-I realized that rick was an extremely talented fighter and I started to support him equally along with the thai.I'm sad that these feelings are inside me and many other americans, but hollywood and money brings out the worst in all of us.
I think many Americans initially rooted for Rick just because he was American (or caucasian); it's kinda silly when you think about it. Why should we automatically root for someone just because luck would have it that we were born on the same continent or with the same skin complexion? Hopefully the sport of kickboxing (all types) will help us to see that we all can share admiration for courageous fighers and skill.
You have to think that it had an effect. The thing is, Rick and Jeff haven't always gotten along. (Sibling rivalry) So I don't know if Jeff first became involved with Thai Boxing to support or to spite his brother.
Whatever the reason, he certainly became one of the best.
funny how this just keeps going on Duke was kid sticking up for his brother, wouldnt you. now they are both 2 of the best at what they do, including MMA , Pat Miletich and several other coaches use Duke to help with stand up , Duke has a few guys in his camp that will be world MMA champs, like a kickboxer turned Ground Fighter Anthony " showtime " Pettis , do a little research on Roufus Sport and Duke and you wouldnt be talking so much garbage. come train with us in Milwaukee and find out,
I kinda understand it when a Thai person talks some smack about this clip - They have a lot of National pride and should demand proper respect for their sport. (The anouncers did come off as a bit racist and at the time Duke was ignorant of MT at the time.)
But, I don't understand the Americans who want to badmouth Roufus. He learned from this loss and went on to become a Champion. When you learn from your mistakes you eventually will allways win.
You said it best. I was one of those pissed off as hell at Roufus when I saw this years ago. I truly respect both Roufus' today. And you're right, if your brother gets beat like that, you would have to defend him. Well said. This was a classic, but a classic means it was long ago. Duke shouldn't be judged today for his comments then. What happened to Kongnapa? Duke used to have him as the head trainer. Peace!
whahahahah, they thought that by taking out the elbows and knees in this fight would help the white boy... those kicks was like baseball bats to his legs, ahh ohhh ehhh
Good point. I obviously can't speak for either Rick or 'Duke', but you've really got to suspect that they were dangerously overconfident. - A lot of people make the mistake of underestimating leg kicks. Until you've taken a good one, you really can't believe how much damage they can do. To make matters worse, Rick used an American-Style kickboxing stance which exposed the rear hamstring muscle of his right leg. Foolish!
Hey, thanks for the great comments! I think you're right. RR has very dangerous hands and nearly punched Kietsongrit out early in the fight. But as you probably know, once you loose your legs, you loose the power in your punches. Even worse, you can no longer move fast enough to evade those brutal kicks.
Sorry no. Wilson and Benny 'the Jet' Urquidez are the true American pioneers. They were fighting in Asia long before most Americans had ever even heard the words "Muay Thai." They deserve a lot more credit and respect than they get.
As a side note, did anyone check out the Cung Le/Shamrock fight? Le's roundhouse kicks are very much the same as Thai kicks. Even when Shamrock blocked those kicks, their sheer power still landed. That is until a high roundhouse actually broke Shamrock's arm!
Awsome question! I was thinking the same thing. I'm not a MT expert by any means, but while sparring with under MT rules, I quickly discovered that the side kick is a risky move. Most fighters (including me) drop their leg down after the kick leaving them in a 'side position' to their opponent. This leaves the hamstring (back of the leg area) open to an attack - Very Painful (much worse than being hit in the side of the leg). I believe that's why most MT fighters ignore the side kick
I'll have to check out the Shamrock fight again, but I think Cung completely retracts his leg back to a standard boxing position each time. This takes incredible speed and conditioning, but it allows him to use the kick without worry of taking a low hit to his leg (or risk being grabbed for a takedown). If this is really what he's able to do then he is an amazing athlete!
You can view this fight in one of two ways. You can choose to see Rick and Jeff Roufus as jerks for bad mouthing Muay Thai as youngsters, or you can try to understand that they learned from their earlier mistakes and later learned to embrace a clearly superior method of training and fighting. I have great respect for people that are able to change their point of view and try something new.
Absolutely correct...both brothers converted to Muay Thai...a testament to the effectiveness of Muay Thai. Keep in mind that's only the low Thai kick. Had elbows, clinching and knees been allowed, Jeff would have been toast.
Ha Rick has much better talent because he did jumping spinning kicks? And it doesn't take much talent to do leg kicks? For f*ck sake, Rick couldn't even stop the kicks which didn't take much talent to execute, what does that say of him then? And beautiful kicks are useless, as proven here.
The commentators are all f*cking racist. Ignorant fools hahha, their poster boy got his ass kicked.
I love the commentary of Duke Rufus. It doesn't take much talent to kick someone in the legs. That would be like a boxer arguing that it doesn't take much talent to kick like a kick boxer. It takes talent to kick in the legs, it takes talent to block them, and it takes talent to know how not to get clinched, how to fight in the clinch, etc. Give them clinches, knees and elbows and we'll see how long he would've lasted.
Back the 80's, most white ppl were like that. This case for instance, they were blind w/ idea that foreigner w/ kick boxing skills can beat anything.. Now a day, kick boxing is useless. Muaythai would woop thier ass.Kick boxing day is over and so are their classes. i am glad 80's is over and so Juan Cluad..faggot vandam...
thanks. research on k1 world max japan..see the AZN best fighters there.. Your boyfriend Roufus or long john whatever, would have been killed first round.
Muay Thai and MMA are 2 different things. If you think Muay Thai has no place in MMA then research what is the most common style trained in for striking in an MMA fighter, Muay Thai. There is no such thing as an "MMA kick", the fighters strike according to whatever striking style they've trained in. Why do you think it's "mixed martial arts".
OMG, this "corner man" guy is such a jerk! "It doesn't take much talent to kick in the leg!" "If we fought by our rules, Rick would have won!" WTF? Whatever rules you fight by, a KO is a KO. If you cannot continue the fight because you were unable to defend a few kicks... well, get over it, train differently, and become better. Don't complain about the rules. The rules have nothing to do with it.
Haha i am dying here he was just toying with roufus, thai fighters always start slow but he saw the american sucks bigtime and the most funny part all those people who are talking about the lowkicks they just dont understand kickboxing.
Thai fighters are pussie no shows in true MMA and UFC style fighting. Kickboxing is dead and full MMA is the future. Get used to it. The Thais better learn how to grapple or they might as well go back to cricket.
Man..we should respect all the fighters, disregard where they are from and what type of styles. Every fighting sports takes heart and gut from the fighter.
I am Thai from Thailand and am training Muay Thai. I am so pound of my country and I love Americans.
It's ironic, but I believe that combat sports can actually bring us all together. Most people I know have great respect for Muay Thai - You guys are some of the best fighters in the world. You have much to be proud of.
Ouch Tintongp! The Roufus brothers were courageous enough to try their skills against a very talented Thai fighter. When they discovered that the Thai style was better, they both began to train Muay Thai. I know for a fact that Duke Roufus is a close friend of many Thai fighers. He welcomes them to compete in the US where they often make more money than they would at home.
I understand everyone's criticism, but it's important to know that this match took place before the popularity of UFC and K-1 Kickboxing. Both Duke and Rick Roufus later began to respect and train in the Thai style. Rick would win the K-1 Championships and Duke would go on to become the World Heavyweight Muay Thai Champion - Bringing many talented Thai fighters to the US to train and compete.
That twat said after the fight that it doesnt take any talent to kick in legs. I just dont understand why Roufus lost?! He lost cause american kickboxing is much softer than muay thai. Admit it.It is fighting, not dancing

I love the comment about the "no talent" and "we tought we won the fight" or "we cant fight under these rules" by Jeff, dude was dizzier than his broken brother. and these were not full muay thai rules, if it were then Roufus wudda been escorted by a hearse.

In Muay Thai, flexibility is a must! Traditionally we train so that any of our kicks, whether roundhouse, side or front at least reach out noses.
And yes, we do have side kicks in Muay Thai, it's part of the Muay Boran curriculum
ILoveEggsEggs 2 years ago
@ILoveEggsEggs
Really? I've never seen a traditional MT fighter use the side kick. Turning your body to throw the side kick exposes your hamstring to your opponent's roundhouse and is INCREDIBLY painful! (you only make that mistake once or twice before you learn to face those kicks directly... otherwise you end up looking like Rufus in this fight!)
kicksboxes 1 year ago
@kicksboxes just a quick jab with the foot, almost as if it's a teep kick, just with a little more thrust. recover with a quick retraction by sucking the knee and hips back, again almost like a teep.

Well, you see what happened when he fought on muay thai rules.
Funny that after the fight his Brother said that Kaitsongrit lacked talent and Roufus was the more talented fighter.
Kairtsogrit fought well over 400 matches in his carreer and won most of them, not talented lol..

its funny that duke roufus is saying that it dosent take much talent to kick someone in the leg and that rick roufus is much more skilled because he can throw spin kicks and silly shit but if you see him now hes all about muay thai and he even sells dvds that teach how to kick to the legs but i havent seen him teach a spin kick in any of his dvds lol.. but rick roufus did get better at fighting that style as the years went on but it took this to open his eyes

yeah i've actually read this interview with duke roufus years after his post-fight interview here and after training for years in muay thai (with kongnapa among others) he says he retracts his comments about muay thai leg kicks.

The business needs more like them.
xtremetrainingcenter 3 years ago

Beastforu 3 years ago
It's great to see how the American attitude in the industry change since the time of this fight. Roufus had little knowledge in MT then and he fought a world class Muay Thai fighter like Changpuek, there was only one outcome. The Roufuses were young but still, they can't erase the dumb shit they did and said. Look at people comparing MT to other fighting styles. Why not just say a skilled boxer can't handle kickboxing cause he's not trainned in kicking?

I get your point, but let's be fair, this video is well over 15 years old now. While the announcers were a bit racist, and the Roufus brothers were a bit naive, the fact remains that Americans soon learned to embrace muay thai. Now days, every mixed martial artist studies muay thai to improve their standing game. While mistakes were made in the past, we can still learn and grow together.

Rick was niave...just like all the idiot stand-up fighters when they walked into UFC 1. Muay Thai is only good standing up, and most Thais have no fucking idea how to grapple (how many Thais fight in the UFC and others?). Maurice Smith would STILL smash any Muay Thai guy right now cuz he'd have enough defense to handle their kicks and kness and then take em down...then BYE BYE tough Muay Thai fighter.
angelmanfredy 3 years ago
umm actually YES muay thai fighters know alot about grappling its called Bokator....read up on thai culture and styles of fight before u talk...and Asians in generall dnt usually fight in the UFC cuz they need a special card that costs a shit load to fight in the states wich is just not worth it
420blazejuggalo 3 years ago 2
I am well aware of Bokator but I also know that most Thai fighters do nothing but Muay Thai in their training. That's like saying every American knows how to wrestle.
There have been fighters from Thailand that have come into the states (and Japan) to fight MMA and although their stand-up is awesome they are usually lacking on the ground.
Fighters come from all over the world to fight in the UFC, Dream, etc. That's total BS to say they cant come to the US to fight. be real, man.

Once I got over the subconscious hatred I felt was caused by racist van damme and rambo movies-I realized that rick was an extremely talented fighter and I started to support him equally along with the thai.I'm sad that these feelings are inside me and many other americans, but hollywood and money brings out the worst in all of us.
turkeydragon 3 years ago
I think many Americans initially rooted for Rick just because he was American (or caucasian); it's kinda silly when you think about it. Why should we automatically root for someone just because luck would have it that we were born on the same continent or with the same skin complexion? Hopefully the sport of kickboxing (all types) will help us to see that we all can share admiration for courageous fighers and skill.

I couldn't agree with you more.
Rick

You said it best. I was one of those pissed off as hell at Roufus when I saw this years ago. I truly respect both Roufus' today. And you're right, if your brother gets beat like that, you would have to defend him. Well said. This was a classic, but a classic means it was long ago. Duke shouldn't be judged today for his comments then. What happened to Kongnapa? Duke used to have him as the head trainer. Peace!

kickboxes ,
why didn't RR do some research on MT before this fight , he would have known about leg kicks and have an idea how to defend them .
I mean this was the 80's not the 20's , they could have done it .
KLguy133 3 years ago
Foolish!
Good Post, your point is well taken!
kicksboxes 3 years ago
Oh believe me , I know what a MT low kick feels like unchecked - NOT nice .
Strangely enough , RR was doing very well up to the start of rd2 , his stick and move boxing was very good , he should have kept it up.
Good vids and comments btw.
KLguy133 3 years ago
Hey, thanks for the great comments! I think you're right. RR has very dangerous hands and nearly punched Kietsongrit out early in the fight. But as you probably know, once you loose your legs, you loose the power in your punches. Even worse, you can no longer move fast enough to evade those brutal kicks.
Thanks for the good observations.
Respectfully,
Rick

As a side note, did anyone check out the Cung Le/Shamrock fight? Le's roundhouse kicks are very much the same as Thai kicks. Even when Shamrock blocked those kicks, their sheer power still landed. That is until a high roundhouse actually broke Shamrock's arm!
Rick
kicksboxes 3 years ago
Yes , but more interesting was Cung's use of the sidekick , which semmed to work very well.
We seldom see it in MT , any thoughts as to why not ?
KLguy133 3 years ago
Awsome question! I was thinking the same thing. I'm not a MT expert by any means, but while sparring with under MT rules, I quickly discovered that the side kick is a risky move. Most fighters (including me) drop their leg down after the kick leaving them in a 'side position' to their opponent. This leaves the hamstring (back of the leg area) open to an attack - Very Painful (much worse than being hit in the side of the leg). I believe that's why most MT fighters ignore the side kick
kicksboxes 3 years ago
I'll have to check out the Shamrock fight again, but I think Cung completely retracts his leg back to a standard boxing position each time. This takes incredible speed and conditioning, but it allows him to use the kick without worry of taking a low hit to his leg (or risk being grabbed for a takedown). If this is really what he's able to do then he is an amazing athlete!
Respectfully,
Rick
kicksboxes 3 years ago
Yes , Cung is very well trained in the use of the sidekick , but if his opponent was Kietsongrit then I dare say he may have Kopped a few leg kicks.
What weight was the RR x Kiet match fought at , because RR also fought at HW in K1 , I would assume quite a big weight difference between the two.
KLguy133 3 years ago
You can view this fight in one of two ways. You can choose to see Rick and Jeff Roufus as jerks for bad mouthing Muay Thai as youngsters, or you can try to understand that they learned from their earlier mistakes and later learned to embrace a clearly superior method of training and fighting. I have great respect for people that are able to change their point of view and try something new.
kicksboxes 4 years ago
Absolutely correct...both brothers converted to Muay Thai...a testament to the effectiveness of Muay Thai. Keep in mind that's only the low Thai kick. Had elbows, clinching and knees been allowed, Jeff would have been toast.
MikeUntstinks 4 years ago
Ha Rick has much better talent because he did jumping spinning kicks? And it doesn't take much talent to do leg kicks? For f*ck sake, Rick couldn't even stop the kicks which didn't take much talent to execute, what does that say of him then? And beautiful kicks are useless, as proven here.
The commentators are all f*cking racist. Ignorant fools hahha, their poster boy got his ass kicked.

his brother talks mad shit....I find it hilarious that there's a duke roufus leg kicking instructional video in the related videos section.
