@notseymour A guy with terminal diarhorea in New York who was stuck in a lift due to his big hump introduced me to Meshuggah and they introduced me to a transvestite called sydney who liked to pee outside taxi windows at republicans introduced me to Krantz. Networking is so important.
@LordHines420 Wow...you didn't shoot that comment down! I thought for sure talk of Meshuggah would be pooped on around these parts. Listening to them gives me an equal high as Krantz, yet it's COMPLETELY different music.
This guy has re-awakened my desire to play guitar. His playing is just beyond what most guitarists contemplate: play with your mind, with freedom and complete improvisational expression ... and it's brilliant.
that's not whippersnapper! these song titles are incorrect... nonetheless, wayne is a monster. going to see him play this thursday at 55 bar. stoked as all getout.
afternoon youtube, can anybody tell me what kit carlock uses i know its yamaha, but is it a signature or something.....? any information would be very much appreciated. cheers!! and enjoy an amazing bit of footage, blimey!!
@meccaollielord seems all i had to do was the most miniscule research to find out. For anyone thats interested he currently uses Yamaha Phoenix/PHX kits.
Wow, he and the music his group puts together reminds me of the kind of impression Miles made when put together that group with Tony Williams, Short, Hancock and Ron Carter. Talk about dynamic!
I would have liked to have been in NYC on the very first night Keith Carlock played his very first licks in public in NYC............GEEZ..........what an exciting player.........as are all in this trio. Being a drummer myself, I am enthralled with Keith's style and finesse. This is such an early tape of Keith in his career.............at least from an NYC view. I know this was taped in another country but I am referring to the time period in this band's life.
sure..... it sounds like the 3 main forms are on the b, g, and d strings w/ an open high e. the first chord is an Eb minor triad (1st inversion) then a G maj7/F# no 3rd (f# on strg 4, open g then d on 2nd strg fret 3) .and then a perfect 4th interval of g# and c# forming a C#minor triad in the 2nd inversion w/ the high e ringing out. pretty sure that's it but if if it's wrong i apologise.
great thing about music. anything goes. but since the information shared concerning the previous question IS correct. then that could be labeled "whatever". the humor is great though. thanks bro.
@startDaemons Yes, they are marsupials, as they complete their development outside their mother's belly, and inside their pouches (marsupium), but that doesn't prevent them from having to feed from mother's milk, so they are definitely mammals too!
Does anyone know the title of the track that begins at about 1:30?... I think the title shown on the screen is incorrect and I'm desperatly tryin to fond this song... Thx see ya Dave
It's from his first album Long to be Loose. The song is called "What they were written about". The titles of the tracks on that album are arranged so that when you read them through it comprises a paragraph describing his approach to music. Pretty sweet!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
During this interview Wayne make it sound like this is something new....a new style....or something....well...go and listen to recordings of old Brand X..they did exactly the same...
Its absolutely nothing new with this music..though..its cool..groovy..and great playing....but have been done long long time before..
This isn't much like Brand X at all, but if you haven't heard Phil on the track "Nuclear Burn" by Brand X, you're missing out on some great drumming from the 70's.
na not really homey... brand x is great. but the way these guys play together rythmically and tonally, was definatly something new around 1997-99. these guys change tempos and all sorts of interesting ways of new creations of a groove jazz approach! word!
the thing about Wayne is he that he plays guitar differently, he removed all scale-approaches, "boxes", modal shapes etc from his head, he invented his own style of playing, actually for the first year in berklee he was gigless cause he coulden't play that well after reinventing himself. he approaches the guitar the way a piano player would. he would look at it as a box of notes and make up chords and phrases as he go along dependent on waht he wants to play at that moment.
you would never see his voicings being utilized by someone else, he always plays something different.
his book, an improvisers OS, outlines his system, it's really hard for anyone who approaches the guitar in the way most people do. but if you manage to grasp the concepts, your world will be blown away.
Does anyone know if any of this material has been released on a recording? I really like the tunes here, but as far as I know, they are not available on any of Krantz's solo albums. I recognized the 'whippersnapper' title, but I guess he changes the tunes a lot, because everything is so spontaneous.
I'm gonna have to look Krantz up, on the net. I'm interested in the device he uses here to replicate the computeristic sounds on his guitar. That's interesting.
Damn this is so FRESH and original. Wayne is the most ferociously original player I've ever heard..and I'm a huge Scott Henderson fan. These guys get off their asses and take such risks in their music..Thank you God for such talent. Fucking awesome!
when it comes down to it (keith carlock is my fav drummer btw), this trio is SOOO FUCKING AMAZING.. Just the technicality of all their songs are intense. this is NUTZ!!!!!!!
they are just going for different things... im sure they have appreciation for each other. as well lots of people appreciate both and all musicians... just depends on what really hits your soul deeply. wayne and the boys are deeep!
The song at the end of this segment is giving me goose bumps. When he repeats that theme late with the bass just alternating 1/5, it is sublime. This is a fantastic video.
You can hear more of this sort of music on radio PBS streaming on web. They have weekly fusion show called "BITCHES BREW" . Can't give web adress here , but do google search on "pbs len davis" to find it . They may have interview with Keith Carlock on it soon.
Well, he has been playing quite a while (even played with Steely Dan) , so not surprising he is 51 . But everyone is getting older , John McLaughlin and Billy Cobham are 65 now , Robin Ford is 56 , Mike Stern about the same ...... time keeps slipping into the future ! .
Yes time goes on, no pun intended. The only person who never gets old is Steve Morris. I saw his with Deep Purple and he looks the same as he did when I saw him 30 years ago with the Dregs. It was freaky! Don't care for the band but he was amazing.
