  • NANDOS!

  • 1:05 is she flashing her fanny?

  • This song is not one of Dolly Parton's best songs. Remember, this song was an original Gypsy Song that was sung and performed in Russian. It really doesn't sound appropriate in this country style. In fact, it takes the proper style away from the song, which Mary Hopkin keeps, even though she also sings this in English. I enjoy other songs that Dolly Parton recorded, but this one is not the one that shows her style.

  • класс!!!

  • Gdje su dani ti!

  • DOLLY'S TURNING TIME N TAVERN'S

    INTO STARRY NOTIONS.

  • Einfach ne tolle Frau und nen toller Song...

  • @SuckBigHorseDick Jealousy isn't becoming.

  • This makes the song ridiculous! I LOVE Dolly but she might as well have added tambourines to Taps.

  • @SuckBigHorseDick well, anybody *can*, but she wouldn't.

  • somertimes i wish i could have lived through the 60's 70's 80's and 90's....i hear my mom saying "those were the days"...and she says so much good about the back in the days..makes me wanna live them like she did..sadly i was born in the 90's

  • Sounds like a sing-a-long version with the Chipmunks!

  • Gpod. WELLDONE. From an audience of "THE MARRY HOPKIN SHOW" at Osaka Expo. Thanks for posting this. Regard, Tomoya

  • That was very good, I liked it ..<3<3

  • Нани Брегвадзе Дорогой длинною

    original

  • bullshit for this song my frinde lalallalyalalay those were the days

  • love the bluegrass version

  • Beautiful song with southern touch ; )

  • The music is from a Russian folk song and the words were rewritten in England and made popular by Mary Hopkin on a talent show called 'Opportunity Knocks' in the late 1960's reaching number 1 in the English charts. Oh, and Mary Hopkin sings with feeling not like this rubbish.

  • who cares where it originally came from lol

  • @48Hotspur1 You have no idea how this is important for us especcialy if it is going about Poland-Russia, but I agree that this is russian song. Anyway Dolly Parton's version is amazing.

  • @HenrykaOdKleryka maybe your right that i dont know how important it might be to you but what i do know is people came to look at this vid to see dolly parton sing a song not have a political debate

  • @48Hotspur1 It's not political issue it's just that we are very sensitive about what people think about us and sometimes we are overreacting.

  • @HenrykaOdKleryka oh i see, well good luck anyway im just passing through :))

  • shes fucking brill i love her she sings way better then that ather one

  • noo dolly is the besttt it sounds more beat and more newer i like dolly better

  • Yes mary hopkin , was the best doing this song

    she 's amazing

    but dolly is fine too

actualy i just luv this song , nice words

  • Originally it was POLISH

  • @verrierify

Originally it was Russian song written by Boris Fomin

  • I love Dolly's work, but I have to agree that Mary Hopkin did the best job.

The song is themed around a Russian tavern of long ago (although it puts me in mind of a Bavarian scenario in the 20's or 30's). While Dolly's rendition was great, there was too much of a transition to a modern theme, and too upbeat.

  • Dolly's voice is just right for this,

she understands the material and her interpretation is spot on.

I'm not sure about the country pickin' for this, though.

  • haha, 10 years from now, Justin Bieber fans look back and say "those were the sucky days"

  • Those were the days. Thats all. Never more

  • Dolly your voice will forvever haunt me.

I listened to her as a child in dads car...I play her now to my son in my car and he loves her. When we sing along to her it warms my heart.

    What an amazing voice

  • mantep!!!!

  • Love the very end.

  • Interesting version but the Hopkin/Apple arrangement suit the reflective mood of the song much better. This version is just a bit too chipper.

  • Mary Hopkin sang this song better than anyone...

  • what a beautiful song,.....:O:O:O:O

  • wasn't the original song from poland ? xD

  • @XxGirIxX Song was originally Russian,

    the arrangement still is.

  • I love her voice. So lively.

  • i love dolly parton!!!!!

  • I love her!

  • This version by Dolly Parton carries the bohemian feeling that makes this song a perfect sing-along for everyone.

  • Из России с любовью называется...

  • Thanks for the post. It seems most of my musical education comes from people like you that care enough to put these on-line.

She sang an almost bluegrass version of the old tear-jerker here and I had to listen several times

  • Way to go! The Pneumatic, Trifle-faced Hunch-Front of Country Music still has the ability to make vomit in cringe-worthy disgust! Cheers Dolly!

  • I have enjoyed this. Always did like Dolly and loved this song. brings back alot of memories.

  • Sorry, Mary Hopkin's version is still the best.

  • Russian,Celtic,Greek,Slovic,African,Hillbilly,Asian, Hindu, all the same. Raise a glass with some friends add some music and sooner or later we are all singing along. Nostrovia!

  • super!!!

    welcoe to country-music from Russia

    look my site!!!

  • very nice Dolly,,, but the original by Mary Hopkins is far and away the best ever. thanks for posting.

  • really love this song... Thank you for posting it.

  • dream... and ... dreams...szuper !!!

  • She does a very nice job of this song i must say. i love Mary Hopkins version, but this one is a close second.

  • You might also like to listen to Shaggy - in which he samples the chorus of this in his rap: 'Those Days'

(You can find it on YouTube - - Just search >> Shaggy Those Days

  • The best known version of this traditional song is by Mary Hopkins and it was produced by Paul McCartney for the Beatles APPLE label.

It was release #:~ 'Apple 2'

You can hear Mary Hopkins on the backing vocals of Dolly's version

The beginning and the ending of Dolly's version are better than Mary's version.

  • it's an old russian song written by Boris Fomin

for the history of this song with original russian reccordings just search in Youtube:

Dorogoy dlinnoyu BEFORE Those were the days

  • those were the days are in much different ways to hear and see but this is the strangest one.

nice to hear but vocal it is a strange song.

  • i love u dolly

  • she is so wonderful.......

  • super

  • кънтри вариант на руската песен ,,дорогой длинною,,

  • I like this version, but I still like Mary's better. Dolly made it more western which is nice.

  • well, after all she´s the so called "queen of country", from what i hear...

  • Fantastic*****

  • awful song XDDD Turisas - Those were the days \,,/

  • omg.....thats the song we had to sing O.O

  • I heard this song playing in Dollywood this weekend when I went, it took me forever to find it, but now I have! LOVE THE SONG!!! I love Dolly too!!! :D

  • She just gets better 'n better, our Dolly! I love this very Russian/gypsy-- yet American sound: crowds of vocaleers, the strings (banjo and the other pickers) & harmonica enriches it all.

  • Wow this is a Amazing version !!

  • very nice!

  • It sounds sooooo American...

  • a bit to much...

  • Put simply Dolly is the best frmale vocalist bar none, Any song she sings sounds better.

  • i agree

dolly rocks as a country singer

    she's one of my favorites

  • I never heard this song done by Dolly she does a great job on it !!

  • I absolutely love this song. It's from one of her best CDs.

  • I like the way she sings "call my name...oh my friends we 're older but no wiser.." Different, special.

  • Good singing. But i still think that Mary Hopkin is the best. Only she can really make me feel "those were the days". Oh, those were the days...

  • I'm surprised how good a job she did with this and just as surprised she chose to sing it at all.

  • Crap

  • aint bad but mary hopkins is thee best at singing it

  • I just love how versatile this song is.

I've heard many great versions of it, just shows how many people can relate to it's messages and in so many different cultures.

  • Great Song

  • my world's just gone full circle

-is there anything Dolly can't do?

  • this song is best suited to be sung by some east european singers and not by an american cowgirl's accent.

  • Perhaps you right

  • actually to assure you of something, it was oringinally a russian song. It was meant to be in this style to start with. It is a versatile song which can be done in many ways. Whose to decide how it is sung? Plus her version has this unusual sad undertones, yet its powerful and strong. IT pierces the message, rather than being suttle. Either way I like all versions of this song. Just you seem too narrow, I'd say - get a bit of everything!

  • jawy5791 The music for this song was written by a Russian Boris Fomin in the 1920's and the lyrics by an American Gene Raskin in the 1960's.. the song "Dorogoy Dlinnoyu" (Along a long road) was written by B Fomin (music) and K. Podrevsky (lyrics)in the 1920's and apart from melody has no similarity whatsover with "those were the days"

  • Cool

  • I love Dolly's and Mary's versions!!!!Great pictures,too!

  • Dolly's version is way better. She made this song so much better. I don't really like the other versions that much, but I love hers. The chorus sounds like it should be upbeat and not so sad, cause it's looking back on good memories. She took this song and made it her own and in my openion, made it better.

  • Well that's yer opinion Rebfancy and I respect it. But I prefer Mary Hopkin's version. This song is supposed to be real sad because when two long time friends grow apart, that is very sad because one party is reminiscing and wondering what happened.

  • omg of course, this is dolly parton's voice! i've had this and mary hopkin's version on my computer, but didn't know who sang that one! ah, now it sounds even better;-)

  • Hm. I love Dolly's version, it's not meant to be the exact same as every other version. I rather like the more upbeat side of it, considering Dolly's sad songs are usually a bit slower.

  • I think Dolly, Mary Hopkins, and Bonnie Tyler did fantastic jobs on this song. I respect Dolly's because she made it her own - much more fast and countrified, as opposed to just covering it. This is a great song in general!

  • um sorry but her voice is a bit too strong for such a sad song. I LIKE MARY HOPKINS VERSION BETTER. This one isn't THAT bad but still... There's way better.

  • dolly parton cannot sing this song she has ruined it

  • ok jerry vale's the real artist rite?

  • great sing , great singer!

  • I LOVE THIS SONG!! mary hopkins is way to slow but shes okay.

  • I think Dolly's version is far too upbeat to portray the sorrowful emotions in the song. Eep!

  • not that good, only reason came to look at this was coz want to no how to sing it properly... turisas's verision + mary hopkins versions better :)

  • I like Mary Hopkin's version of the song better and Paul McCartney's

  • LENINGRAD COWBOYS has the coolest song

  • @arskanbaari With Red Russian Army Choir :)

  • lol, those were the daaaaaaze

  • So strange to hear the white american country singer sing a gipsy folk song.. But she is as always fantastic.

  • hopkin is very of great spirit to sing backup of her signature song.I love them both parton and hopkin.

  • please please please ,this is awful, good God!and she looks so bloody stretched-the plastic surgeon's darling par excellence! How sad

  • Yes, Mary Hopkin did the back up vocals. See "wiki" to confirm.

  • We love you, Dolly! ^_^

  • isn't she something!

  • While I am a big DP fan, I have to say I prefer the MH version. But I am glad I listened to the DP version. I swear, even if that woman sang "Text Message Breakup" it would sound classy.

  • but not much better!

  • I love Dolly's and Mary's versions!!!!Great pictures,too!

  • this is my favorite song ever!!! i love it

  • Is Mary Hopkin on the backing vocal?

  • No. Mary Hopkin uses the same notes always. Dolly notes are different

  • Yes Mary did sing on the backing vocals for this version, Dolly personally asked Mary to contribute to it.

  • Du gör den bra också Dolly.

  • Dolly is a goddess.

  • just amazing !!! love dolly <3 !!! fab version of the song i love it !!! grate job on the vid hun !!!! xx
