Mulan is the same. It' about haruhi not wanting to become the beautiful princessy girl everyone expects her to be, because that's just not her. She'd rather be herself. Also because shes poorer than the others, no one would expect her to be at a rich upperclass school, but she feels she belongs there. It's about Haruhi going against the normal pretty girl expectancies.
