i had this encounter once...i was with an experienced pilot and the engine faced trouble...i had my light backpack parachute on...and i jumped...i hit the trees at 18ft/s...pretty rough but minor cuts/bruises/no broken bones and i survived. same with the pilot...the plane just crashed and burned...
its a shame flight schools/FAA/NTSB don't make this mandatory...parachute training and gear should be a must for cross-country travel.
this is why you should always wear a parachute and good body armor (life jacket etc) when flying a small plane especially over mountain/forest/water bodies.
