This scored 19 goals in 6 games!!!! What made this possible was the quintet of players comprising Jairzinho, Rivelino, Tostao, Gerson and most important Pele who was the lynch pin.
Pele = 4 goals, 5 assists
Rivelino = 3 goals, 3 assists
Jairzinho = 7 goals, 0 assists,
Tostao = 2 goals, 4 assists
Gerson = 1 goal, 2 assists.
The goals were often consisted of a duet or trio of these players. e.g. England goal, Tostao-Pele-Jairzinho. 3rd goal v Italy, Gerson-Pele-Jairzinho.
Player for player this team was not the greatest ever world cup team, or even the greatest Brazilian team ever.
Tactically though, they were the most perfectly balanced football team ever. They had a perfectly symmentrical balance of natrually left footed players (Rivelino, Tostao, Gerson, Marco Antonio) and right footers (Jairzinho, Pele, Clodorado, Carlos Alberto).
@opera123able You're right. And a good defense, with a rock-solid center-back (Brito) and a more techically gifted center-back Piazza. It was the first team in the history of the sport playing with a 4-2-3-1 (some football experts even say that they didn't use a center forward)
@ls121231 I dont think they were a great team defensively, they were ok though. They conceded at least 1 goal in every game except against England, and England were desperatley close to scoring 3.
I think they were a very fluid, free flowing team & top players. The lynch pin to the whole team was Pele, and having a perfect balance of left and right footed players was a massive advantage. Left = Tostao, Gerson, Riveline, Mario Ceaser, Everaldo
Right = Pele, Jairzinho, Clodoraldo, Carlos Alberto
@opera123able Right, perhaps not great, but had good defenders (Carlos Alberto is probably the best right-back of all time, Everaldo was a very solid defensive fullback). In therms of defensive playing, I think that the 1958-62 team was better. In 1958 Brazil reached the semi-finals without conceding a single goal!
BTW, you're very well informed about that team, considering that you're not brazilian. Congrats :-)
@ls121231 Thanks! - I am from England (in case you didn't guess) where the game was first invented. But the country of Brazil since the WW2 have basically re-invented the game of football and made it there own. They are the most skilled, confident & flamboyant of all the football nations historically, although in the last 2 World Cups I have found them a bit ordinary.
@opera123able Well, I didn't guess that you're english, and now I'm not surprised about your knowledge. I know that many english fans are also very well informed about the history of football (i've visited your country last year and talked about it with some of you and I became really impressed).
@ls121231 I agree that the 1958 / 1962 team (which were virtually identical to each other) were overall stronger than the 1970 team. I dont think the 1970 team's defence could have handled the combination for very long of a 17 year old Pele or 21 year old Pele, Garrincha, Didi, Vava, Zagalo, Zito or even Pele's replacement in 1962 Amarildo.
If you compare player for player the 1958/62 team to the 1970 team, then the 1970 team is weaker.
I would say Garrincha beats Jairzinho, Vava beats Tostao, Didi & Gerson are even, Zagalo & Rivelino are even, Zito beats Clodoraldo, Gilmar beats Felix (easily!) Djalma Santos was no.1 defender.
As for Pele I think the 21 year old 1962 version was the best as he was less worn than the 1966 and 1970 Pele, but more experienced than the raw 1958 Pele.
@opera123able I agree, that 1970 team is weaker, but I don't think that Rivelino and Zagalo were in the same level. Rivelino was a very gifted left-midfielder, a great dribbler and a wonderful passe with a great vision, and Zagalo was hard-working player, tactically very accomplished but not amazing in terms of skill. I agree with the rest of your comparisions.
@ls121231 Yes the English are in awe of Brazil as a football nation - we very much look up to Brazil as being the supreme footballing nation, and for England to defeat Brazil in the World Cup would be like winning the whole tournament.
Its interesting about you views on Rivelino and Zagalo, thinking about it you are probably correct, as Rivelino was excellent again in the 1974 World Cup and was their best player then when they reached the semi's
@opera123able About George Best, its quite interesting. He was probably the best in the world in 67/68, but I don't think that he receive the credit he deserves in global terms. At least here in Brasil, names like Banks, Bobby Moore and Bobby Charlton are far more famous and well considered than Best, probably because they played against us very often (matches Brazil x England, including friendlies, were very frequent in the 60s and early 70s) and - specially B. Moore - played brilliantly.
@opera123able But again, I'm amazed with your knowledge of the history of football not only brazilian football but the game as a whole. As I said, it seems to be very common in England. When I visited your country last year I had some talks about it (when they knew I am brazilian it becomes an instant subject :D) and many seemed to know a lot about the past players, old world cups, etc, etc.
@ls121231 I got a video about Pele's career and I also bought a DVD called 'The Boys from Brazil', all about the post WW2 Brazil teams and players.
I've lost interest in modern football the last 10 years
George Best was a footballing genius like Ferenc Puskas or Diego Maradona. He was a winger but had a goal scoring record that a striker would be proud of. Best was from Northern Ireland and sadly never got to show his talent to the whole world as he never qualified for the world cup with them.
@opera123able And I think that Pele achieved his peak between 1962 and 1966. I've watched some Santos matches from that period on youtube and believe me, he was absolutely crazy. He was certainly rounded by great players like Pepe, Gilmar, Coutinho, Mauro, Lima and others, but it dont diminish his achievements.
About Gilmar (I agree 100% with your comparision with Felix): he was one of the best keepers in the world back then (late 50s and early 60s), while Felix was the weakest player in 70.
@ls121231 I agree - especially about Pele. He was absolutley Dog nuts from 1958 to about 1965 as he didn't have the injuries and wear and tear from being fouled so much back then. 1962 should have been Pele's World Cup where he stand out as the outwright superstar, would score a hat full of goals, win the golden boot and of course the World Cup. Although he did pretty dam good in 1958 & 1970.
I think in 1965 and 1966 Eusebio was the best player in the World, and in 1967/1968 it was George Best

Brazil 2014 world cup squad: GK Julio Cesar RB Dani Alves (c) = Carlos Alberto CB David Luiz CB Thiago Silva LB Marcelo CDM Sandro = Clodaldo LAM Renato Augusto = Rivelino RAM Ganso = Gerson RST Pato = Tostao CF Neymar = Pele LST Lucas Moura = Jairzinho the new joga bonito!
Brazil were not attacking and Italy defending, but the other way around. Brazil hit the overly enthusiastic Italy on the counter.
The revolutionary back then 4-2-3-1 Brazil were playing allowed them to just toy with Italy and their obsolete tactics and technically inferior players.. It's similar to how Germany beat England and Argentina at the WC last year.
@darkoneforce2 Good point.. Brazil played with only I striker, Tostão, and Pele, Rivelino and Jairzinho were 3 attacking midfielders, and the italians weren't in the same level neither tactically nor techically. And I still think that the true final of that world Cup was Brazil x England. The english were better than the italians.
People that say Messi is the best ever are 13 years old PES addicted kids. Watch and learn from the past. Messi plays well in the 1 billion Barcelona team, but fails when playing for Argentina.
THAT BRAZIL IS THE BEST, THE TOP, THE GREATEST NATIONAL TEAM THE WORLD HAVE SEEN. BY FAR THE BEST EVER. AND OF COURSE PELE IS THE BEST EVER. THE BEST & MOST SUCCESSFUL NATIONAL TEAM EVER!!! :)
barcelona arent a patch on this magnificent team. They are the benchmark for all teams. If anyone thinks this brazil side would not have been able to break down mourinhos Inter then they are very uch mistaken. This team is the greatest ever and carlos albertos goal in the final is one of, if not the most magical moments if football. The build up play is mesmerising and the strike is sublime in power and technique. Those 30 seconds or so are the reaon for the phrase " the beautiful game"
Pele's control at 1:45, sublime! Looking at some videos of him, I think people are being too hasty in proclaiming Messi as the inevitable best player ever at the end of his career..
@donal1000 I could'nt agree more with you my friend. The great control and presence of mind to know that jarzino is next to him is testimonial to his brilliance. Messi is great at dribbling, but does not have the vision and passing ability that Pele, Maradona and zico had.
I think the English promote Brazilian football so much because their team has only won 1 world cup (45 years) and controversially I might add along with a fourth place (1990) and that is pretty much it. They don’t want to promote German or Argentine football because of their rivalry with these countries so they’re always singing the praises of Brazil because they don’t have that much to sing about their own team.
@truvianni You don't have to be English to admire Brazilian football. I'm not English and that Brazilian team of 1970 was the best i've seen.. The German team that most impressed me was Euro 72 but they were not the best team overall in the 54 and 74 world cups which they won, unlucky with linesman decision in 66. Argentina have usually been strong, were helped by home advantage in 78. But Brazil have often been the most talented and exciting- 1958 was another tremendous team, and 82. .
@mizofan Well, I thought that the English didn't like the flair and skilled football that we have. I thought that they prefer players with more commitment and stamina and less techniche like Bryan Robson or Roy Keane and despise players like Zico, Ronaldinho or Garrincha considering them "luxurious". Even some english players with these characteristics seems to be not very respected by the english fans (like John Barnes and Paul Gascoigne), but I might be wrong.
@invino334 Oh no, there's love for beautiful football alright, as well as admiration for commitment and heart. There are other aspects like dedication too- skilful players who are considered lazy or lacking spirit may get a mixed reaction, but a true artist with the right attitude will be loved. George Best was wayward and lacked dedication when fame and drink affected him but is still a hero to many in England and the rest of the UK, even though he probably didn't do full justice to his talent.
@mizofan Thanks for your explanation.I based my opinion observing the english team and the kind of players that you seem to admire most. And I remember a interview of J. Barnes in a Brazilian magazine years ago. He said that he and some english players of his generation (Gascoigne, Waddle and others) were considered "luxurious" and "lazy" by part of the english media and fanbase. Since Barnes is very respected here in Brazil, I thought that it would be something like a cultural issue.
@invino334 Well, i'm not English anyway, but love Brazilian football. Barnes of course scored a great goal v Brazil. I liked him and think he should have played the whole match in 86 world cup v Argentina; he was the best player in the team when he came on as sub. Gascoigne was generally considered competitive, very popular for the 1990 World Cup but had off the field problems, Waddle the weakest of the 3, i.m.o.
@truvianni I think Italians or their descendants (such as yourself) are the only ones who continually turn a blind eye to Brazil's technically and often tactically superior (due to having better players) football because you are behind Brazil in terms of success. You probably say Maradona was the best ever, too...
Back when football was about pace, skill and passion. Not diving, money and defensive tactics. I hope the game can return to its once beautiful roots.
Brasil 1970 = Pelé (athleth of the century), Jairzinho, Tostão, Carlos Alberto, Rivelino, Gerson and Clodoaldo. The first national team that won the worldcup wining ALL the games.
Brasil 1958 = Pelé, Garrincha, Vava, Zagalo, Zito and Didi. The ONLY national team of south america that won WORLDCUP in Europe
Brasil 1962 = Garrincha, Pele, Amarildo, Zagalo, Zito and Didi
@zecaralhopt as an Arsenal fan I wish I can say the same but the Barca players are odds on to be the greatest. you can agree or disagree but these are just facts.
The goalkeeper and the defense were comedians. The best team needs balance in all parts of the game, not just attack.
Czechoslovakia and Romania at that time were outsiders. Peru and Uruguay were lucky mediocrities. Italy in the final was drained out because of the semifinal with Germany.
Only England gave a good fight to Brazil and all that Brazil did was a fortunate 1:0 in an otherwise 50:50 game.
@tyzhen man we will never see a team dominate a world cup like that again !!..did they ever give away much goals ?? ..and they were amazin goin forward !! there the best world cup team ever and will always be
@ecfeitosa hey man, respect ! i mean...show some respect what the hell. I don't know where u are from, but i respect ur flag so, man, show some respect.
@ecfeitosa i was reading your comments, you are the same person who said "Fuck racism" in another video??? are you having a double opinion calling Argentine "indian" and "gay" because you just don't like it ? Grow up, travel the world man, you are blind.
U have a good point. I was trying to give this person the taste of his own med. I have Argentines friends and they are nice. 2 wrong dont make right, I know, in this case was just silly talk. Good Day !
LOL 3:01 "As for Carlos Alberto's goal, well for those who have seen it just sit back and enjoy. For everyone else, yes, this actually happened" Best comment I've ever heard! Also the best goal I've ever seen!
LOL 3:02 "As for Carlos Alberto's goal... well for those who haven't seen it, just sit back and enjoy. For everyone else, yes this actually happened". The best and funniest commentary I ever heard. And also the most beautiful goal I've ever seen.

The greatest time ever! Back in that days both Brazil and Italy had won 2 World Cups and who ever won this final would receive the World Cup trophy permanently. Brazil's Magic Football vs Italy's rigid defence and traps. Probably they don't know but this 11 magic players by running over Italy by 4-1 have helped football grow internationaly over the next decades. Who can wonder how football would be nowadays if Italy had won?
How come Brazil can't play like this anymore? I know, its all these Brazilian players like Dunga that playe in Europe for too long and then go back to coach Brazil with European tactics. Plus, sadly, the quality of the Brazilian player has gone down dramatically. Brazilian players don't know how to trick and dribble through the opposition like they used to do. The last great artist was Ronaldinho. That was it. And Oh, Please don't put Leonardo as coach of Brazil. He no different from Dunga.
Pele scored around 500 career goals(in appr 500 games) against european teams. yes, five hundred! he did it with Santos and Brazil. 77 goals in 92 games with brazil against France, Sweden, Germany, Argentina, Italy, Spain, England, USSR. with santos against Benfica, Real Madrid, Milan, Inter.
and btw he is Pele, he can make whatever prediction/wish he wants.
Sorry, this must be the crappiest tribute to Brazil 1970 on Youtube. No shot from half way line, no dummy against Urgy, no booting backl from goalkeepers clearance.. Utter crap..
@prescient8 - Hey Mr Magoo... supply us with the times where these fab incidents occured in the "tribute video" - I've capitalised them to make it easier for you to read:
SHOT FROM HALFWAY LINE, PELE DUMMY AGAINST URGY AND BOOTING BACK KEEPERS CLEARANCE. As I said video is pathetic crap tribute..
Considering it's time, this team may be the best to have existed. But I think many current teams would beat it, as fitness and tatics changed a lot since then.
@manukhan1987 , Brazil 1970 played 40 years ago. Sports Science, fitness, tactics and nutrition havs moved on greatly in that time. If Brazil 1970 played today with all the coaching and science todays players have, I don't doubt they'd be the best on Earth. They had superb players.
I've written an article about how players that succeed in World Cups deserve all the plaudits they get, but that it is also important to remember the world class players in average international sides. It's on my blog, MoronsTalkAboutFootball on Wordpress. Search MoronsTalkAboutFootball on google and my blog should be the first result. The post is called The World Cup; reasons to be glad of its imminence (1) ... Have a read if you like.

Looking at some videos of him, I think people are being too hasty in proclaiming Messi as the inevitable best player ever at the end of his career..
donal1000 8 months ago 13
@donal1000 I could'nt agree more with you my friend. The great control and presence of mind to know that jarzino is next to him is testimonial to his brilliance. Messi is great at dribbling, but does not have the vision and passing ability that Pele, Maradona and zico had.

I think the English promote Brazilian football so much because their team has only won 1 world cup (45 years) and controversially I might add along with a fourth place (1990) and that is pretty much it. They don’t want to promote German or Argentine football because of their rivalry with these countries so they’re always singing the praises of Brazil because they don’t have that much to sing about their own team.
truvianni 8 months ago
@truvianni You don't have to be English to admire Brazilian football. I'm not English and that Brazilian team of 1970 was the best i've seen.. The German team that most impressed me was Euro 72 but they were not the best team overall in the 54 and 74 world cups which they won, unlucky with linesman decision in 66. Argentina have usually been strong, were helped by home advantage in 78. But Brazil have often been the most talented and exciting- 1958 was another tremendous team, and 82. .
mizofan 8 months ago
@mizofan the team in 58 was the same team which also won in 62
truvianni 8 months ago
@truvianni No it wasn't and the 58 team won in Europe.
mizofan 8 months ago
@truvianni yes it was. The 62 team had the same players as the 58 teams all 11 starting players came back to play in Chile 62
truvianni 8 months ago
@truvianni Really? I always thought that the English didn't like the way that Brazil play.
invino334 8 months ago
@invino334 The English like most people greatly admire Brazilian flair and exciting football. Who wouldn't?
mizofan 8 months ago

invino334 8 months ago
@mizofan Well, I thought that the English didn't like the flair and skilled football that we have. I thought that they prefer players with more commitment and stamina and less techniche like Bryan Robson or Roy Keane and despise players like Zico, Ronaldinho or Garrincha considering them "luxurious". Even some english players with these characteristics seems to be not very respected by the english fans (like John Barnes and Paul Gascoigne), but I might be wrong.
invino334 8 months ago

Since Barnes is very respected here in Brazil, I thought that it would be something like a cultural issue.
invino334 8 months ago

I can`t agree that it was the best team ever.

Who can wonder how football would be nowadays if Italy had won?
pma85 1 year ago 2
