The advantage of Kindle over other smart phone devices is battery life because it is E paper platform. When you are looking at the same page for a while, it does not consume battery power, unless you provide an input. You don't want to see your Smart Phone with battery low while you are using EFB. Of course the PDF is irritating, and there are restrictions as mentioned (no back light, touch screen, etc.), so I hope Amazon while develop a better version that will be more convenient for EFB.
I always thought this would be a great idea. I like that the Kindle is the has the best readability and battery life (+40hrs) to any eReader out there. sure the sony one has a black light but it makes the screen fuzzier and harder to read and do you really want to be zooming your fuzzy screen in and out on short final?
The sony has FAR better PDF support, and the PRS-700 has a 2 level backlight. It does have a smaller screen, but the zoom works pretty amazingly, and it has a touch screen.

I agree. Kindle is nice but it has many restrictions. DRM and stuff...
