  • Want to learn calypso? LISTEN TO CALYPSO! Sheesh.

  • Sounds abit like soca

  • I have great appreciation for Berklee, but this is a HORRIBLE demonstration of a basic "Caribbean/Calypso" rhythm.

  • Soca? please explain, is it a code

  • @barry58D soca is a carribean type of music from trinidad its much better than what he's playin don't worry:p

  • If he payed attention at Berklee, he'd know that's a soca.

  • @NAPET1000 looooooooool

  • Nice work!

  • nah u playing the calypso beat wrong its a litle bit faster and ders sumfing missing i kno cuz i play calypso and dat far from da beat it nah have no calypso song i kno u can play wif that crappy sound u call calypso beat

  • Ugh.

  • I sure do love it when it clips every time he hits a drum.

  • you need to put a pillow or blanket in your bass drum, that tone sounds ridiculously terrible.

  • Hey who da hell...ur making a muckery with that horrible attempt of crap thats not calypso and bringing shame on soca, get this damn video off a here....damn wannabes

  • That's sounds more like Soca!

  • This is not calypso this is reggeton.....u guys suck

  • Thats not calypso

  • Fail!Horrible!Do not take this video seriously.

I am a Trinidadian and have to say, this man sucks!

  • Sorry, but this is all wrong. No feel, wrong patterns, and the man doesn't even know what beats he's talking about. This is basically rubbish and comes from someone who knows nothing at all about calypso

  • Comment removed

  • man u cah play calypso for shit...

  • Wow this guy sucks.

  • hey, great video, you really broke it down for me and that's good.

just a quick critique, technically your hi-hat and bass drum are playing on beats 1 & 3.

your playing and feel are good, though, and thank you for your video.

  • calypso isnt modern, it's a 1930s ting

  • you can make all shitty drums sound good, but when giving a lesson it normally helps to have correct information when you tell people the snare pattern is on the and of 2 and beat 4 when your hi hat and bass are giving you the down beats and your actually playing on the uh of 1 and the and of 2

  • A fine example of a confused musician.. the funny thing is he is seriously playing on resonant heads rofll

  • Check out Stu Robert's soca beat tutorial.

    Don't learn from this trash.

  • basic reggaeton

  • 1 uh two and three uh 4 and... way to count time buddy

  • fail.. man

  • Man, this guy totally blows

  • lmao this dude needs lessons himself.

  • its a little different, soca has a different hi-hat rhythm

  • Jeez, buddy, tune ur bass!!!!! That thing sounds HORRIBLE

  • thanks

  • tune it up, scotty

  • learn to count!...

  • TUNE YOUR KIT ESPECIALLY UR BASS!

  • The tricky part for you is learning to tune a drum kit properly...the tricky part for me is trying to keep from laughing at you

  • You really need more swing man. This calypso deum beat is very bad. I Think that Bralizians have a good swing for this beat. You should listen a band called CALYPSO from Brazil.

  • @MAELGP calypso is a beat from trinidad and tobago

  • Actually, you would be playing the first snare hit on the E of two, not the AND.

  • dude.. u are such a good drummer man..

  • That would be a songo buddy

  • this is like one of the most basic beats for drumming. i like Brandon3576s idea better

  • This Calypso Beat Sounds Really Bad In My Opinion. I Play Same Thing With My Hi Hat And Snare But Bass Drum On 1, 3. Then Hi Hat Splashes On 1, 3 Also. Then Of Course I Mix Up My Bass Pedal Variations. (:

  • erm sumthing doesn't sound rite...

  • its the set.. ew

  • expert village are a fucking joke in expansion

  • he's a fag

  • jamais le premier temps sur un calypso....

never hit the first beat on calypso !!!

    f....ck

  • i just really have the urge to strangle this guy...so annoying...so pretentious...with no skill

  • sounds pretty acurate stop complaining

  • New Beat Drum, New Beat Cymbals, New beat quality

  • haha ya your drums sound like shit

  • You really gotta get out more dude. Before you post something, try knowing what your talki'n about. Stay in your bedroom....

  • Get some other drums, thoose sucks.

  • Do they have a drummer that doesn't look like a pedophile???

  • This is a Soca and not a traditional calypso. Its a smooth groove, but play with a steel drum band and there might be some rhythmic discrepancy.

  • This is the best. I started watching Expert Village and have since gotten gigs at my best friends deaf school. Thank God they're deaf, or else they would know that I don't know how to play the drums from crap in a shoe.

  • hahahahahah

  • r u serious hahaha

  • @timebomb15 Hilarious!!!

  • @timebomb15 Best comment ever. These videos are terrible!

  • dont they do this in alot of hip-hop and latino stuff? I know a much better calypso than this

  • ok well then can anyone recommend me a good calypso video? thanks guys... :-)

  • ?????????

    Expert? Calypso??

Stick to teaching rock beats - kaiso has much more heart and feeling!!!!

  • Das Soca music to de bone

  • thats reggetonn.... i hear that crap everyday -_- i live on Puerto Rico

  • Book taught, is he?

  • this guy really sucks....

  • Tricky part? snare on 2+ , and 4? hahaha umph

  • hey! get a crappier kit please!

  • it is called reggaeton!! i know how to play that i usually play it in my house or in church...

  • that's a soca with added fills.

    not a calypso.

  • practice and u'll be good someday!!!

  • dude thats not a calypso beat ......thats just weird!!! calypso has extra beats added to it to give it a sorta rounded play!!! u're just giving and taking and your drum rolls sound terrible

  • Just used this beat at a music practice - thanks, worked well, really useful.

  • that beat is right

  • In fact the spelling of Soca is not the original spelling created by Ras Shorty. This Beat/Rhythm is notated exactly the same in both Calypso and Soca. In Calypso especially older forms, you will find that the Famous Soca drum rhythm appears in bass lines, on bongos, congas, and other instruments so its not as easily identified.

  • This particular rhythm is not a mix of African and Indian. You will however find the Indian African rhythm mix in Soca chutney. The Soca that we hear most that uses this Calypso derived rhythm grew out of Calypso.

  • What Ras Shorty created was more of a Soca Chutney which was a little different than what Soca ended up to be. Other artist in Trinidad and in the Caribbean started calling it Soca and strayed from the formula Ras Shorty started with. The "Soca Beat" is a Calypso rhythm. You find the rhythm in early Calypsos. The difference is that Calypso didn't rely on this particular rhythm as its backbone and Soca does.

  • what the hell, what he was teaching about the hits on the snare wasn't even what he played....

  • I heard it from Ras Shorty I, the inventor of Soca. Soca (the beat) is african and indian rhythms blended by Ras Shorty I in the 70's.

The original soca was infused with american soul music, the soca of today (machel, bunji, Iwer etc) is not. How can soca be soul+calypso if what machel is doing (which is infulenced by dancehall and hip hop and not Soul music) still be called Soca?

  • crap sounding kit, terrible drumming, no feel or groove, and wong groove entirely!(it's a soca not a calypso)

    Novices, stay clear!!!

  • you have no idea what you are talking about, calypso is the mother of soca, soca means 'soul of calypso', the beat IS calypso

  • well this guy does suck but actually dude soca doesn't mean soul of calypso idk where you heard that, but its a combination of a soul and calypso groove thats how they came up with the word soca

  • yes they are connected, i understand that, but they still are played differently...i appreciate that what i said didn't make that clear but if you play a soca and a calypso they are both notated and played differently

  • check out bands like aslyem band with bunji garlin, machel montano,Roy cape and and caribbean band that plays soca and calypso music ,learn it,understand it,sit in with a band or 2 then put out a video,we have enough bad representations out there. One love.

  • get your stuff right...get a new kit......then it might sound good

  • dude its a soca not a calypso

  • wrong its calypso

nd i kno im right cuz i play it were it originted

    in he caribbean

  • You had better tuned the kick drum;)

  • all of the 60 year old middle eastern widows just stood up and threw their shit-encrusted panties all over your face. be proud, you're a real man now.

  • I'm not a boy but I used to be one

  • awesome tune dude bit amatuer though
