  • I'm no hippy, but really like this song(and CSNY)

  • why isn't there a correct version of this song on YouTube? Each version is missing lyrics and voices...what gives? If you are going to showcase a song like this, give us the whole song.

  • This is a fine song indeed. Thanks for sharing it with us. Peace, all. Love each other.

  • You know, I thought this actually sang about Native Americans, just to prove @leeskicitizen 's point

  • Nice song but the 60's sucked. Glad I was't around. Prefer the present.

  • NICE STUFF.

i can see... Take Your Sister BY THE HAND, lead her away from this foreIGN land, far away! where we might understand...

The ambiguity,,, of an honest man. Haven't Got Sick Once. ["nobodies"? leaving?]

  • yea great song takes me back to NAM.. i see by your coat that your from the other side RIP Ricky who lost his life in NAM in that hell hole.. we will met soon old friend

  • the lyrics to this song have great insight

  • One man/woman misclicked

  • Prophetic isn't it? This is lower and middle-class America speaking. But we didn't leave, Wall Street, Big Business, etc., sent us out to sea, adrift on the tides, of out-sourcing, joblessness, illness, poverty and scratching to survive. Yes we must share our "purple berries," amongst ourselves, because they don't give a damn about "us." As Marie A said "Let them eat cake." But we no longer can afford the ingredients to do that! Maybe that's the plan, for us to die for lack of food or healthcare

  • @shinylite54 If you look it up on wikipedia it was written during the cold war and was about the concern of an apocolyptic post nuclear war.

  • @ilikechikkin Although it may have been written during the cold war, it doesn't mean that it doesn't apply today. As someone once said..."If you think you're blazing a new trail, you sometimes discover it's really a well beaten path." This may not be the exact quote, but close to it. But I still believe that humanity possesses gifts of prophecy and intuitiveness about ourselves and the world, which is reflected in any media at humanity's disposal, including music. Music has awakened many.

  • @shinylite54 My favorite bumper sticker of all time came from those embryonic years of change: "What If They Had A War And Nobody Came." We really haven't left yet, but it's getting close. In those days most of us knew what we didn't want to repeat, but the movement was sabotaged before a clear vision of what the meaningful replacement would be. Turn away from the present world and cultivate your inner dream, then manifest it on the shores where the south wind blows. Prophetic indeed.

  • Lets thumbs up the guy who can quote the song! NOT IDIOTS

  • It's actually CSN. Not CSNY. Neil Young wasn't a part of the group yet.

  • never get tired of this track

are there any bands today that write songs like this?

  • @lakefield2112 sonic flower

  • Sends shivers down my spine and brings tears to my eyes every time I hear this...

  • Back then, Sonny, we could buy a loaf of bread for a quarter... Great song.

  • @WoundedEgo yes! bread for a standing liberty quarter, smokes for a silver dime, and does anyone know what a lid was?

  • @waterspindle $20

  • @waterspindle A id was a one ounce bag of pot. Sold for $10 through the 70s.

  • My Great Grandfather came to Ellis Island on such a ship at the age of 10, and his parents were turned away because his mother was ill - "America is a good place to be, son, and you will do well here", his father said. So he made his way working in the coal mines, became a Golden Gloves bare fisted boxer, silent film stunt man, etc... He lived to 88, and was quite a man of living history.

  • Seeing the comments on this song and similar ones from the sixties, I have concluded that the music either creates strong intellectuals or opinionated bastards. I'm still not sure which. :P

Whichever is the case, I'd really just be happier if I could just listen to my music without being bombarded with people arguing.

  • Paul Kantner, Jefferson Airplane/Jefferson Starship, co-wrote the song with Stills, and Crosby.

  • @clinton1949 really? i did not know that... very cool!

  • amazing song i love it :D

  • we do, as people, need to unite as the human race.

however liberal progressive socialism is NOT the path to take, remember those empty grocery store shelves we would see pictures of in the old, USSR(united soviet SOCIALIST republic), that is what socialism leads to, remove the incentive to produce, and people will no longer produce.

  • @oscarmacaroni whataturd...why would anyone but the most spiritually tone-deaf make an ignorant crack like that during an album like this....go away

  • @Chrmngblly typical, libbie diverse and open minded as long as it is on your terms. you socialists are to weak and lazy to take care of your own business, that is why you NEED me to pick up the slack for you, you do not have the courage to be self sufficient, you uneducated, uninformed, ignorant, libtroll.

  • @oscarmacaroni There are numerous forms of socialism, just as there are numerous forms of capitalism, all governments are mixtures of the two only varying by degrees, so stop the slippery slop crap. The USSR was a socialist as the Democratic Republic of the Congo is democratic, in name alone, ruled by a self-interested party elite. I want more competition, not inefficient monopoly or oligopoly, as this unregulated economy is leading us. The worker is being screwed, more and more every year.

  • Purple berries, after all, are the recommended diet after the zombie invasion.

  • Must have been written during the Vietnam war, just listen to the lyrics.A true classic.

  • Amaizing

  • For Hippi ;)

  • Kind of a "Jazz Free form Odyssey" at the end there.

  • This is just CSN. It is from their first album.

  • I thought this song was just CSN???

  • @styx4ever1963 you're right

  • I thought this song was CSN and without Neil Young???

  • The vocals are so smooth. Gives me tingles.

  • Actually this song is referring to the Cold War and the threat of Nuclear attack.

    Awesome song regardless.

  • This is a wonderful song - but the obvious point is not related at all to Woodstock or the sixties even - it is about leaving behind the decay of modern culture and finding community with all people. "I can see by your coat my friend that your from the other side ...there's just one thing I got to know , can you tell me please who won" So I wish you guys would quit harping about Woodstock (where Hendrix played to a field of garbage after everyone had left) and try and apply this to your life

  • Like honey, SWEET.

  • I would give almost anything to be alive when the original woodstock arrived. We will never have such a perfect musical event ever again in history.

  • @relicright

It was a movement to promote peace, and love. How bad do you want it? Take up your cause, walk the walk. That was woodstock.

  • If you smiled at me I would understand, cause that is something everywhere does in the same language.

  • @welten17 I can see by your coat my friend, you're from the other side

  • @BazingaThis

Love this part, is that Nash singing it?

  • Say, can i have some of your purple berries?
