why isn't there a correct version of this song on YouTube? Each version is missing lyrics and voices...what gives? If you are going to showcase a song like this, give us the whole song.
yea great song takes me back to NAM.. i see by your coat that your from the other side RIP Ricky who lost his life in NAM in that hell hole.. we will met soon old friend
Prophetic isn't it? This is lower and middle-class America speaking. But we didn't leave, Wall Street, Big Business, etc., sent us out to sea, adrift on the tides, of out-sourcing, joblessness, illness, poverty and scratching to survive. Yes we must share our "purple berries," amongst ourselves, because they don't give a damn about "us." As Marie A said "Let them eat cake." But we no longer can afford the ingredients to do that! Maybe that's the plan, for us to die for lack of food or healthcare
@ilikechikkin Although it may have been written during the cold war, it doesn't mean that it doesn't apply today. As someone once said..."If you think you're blazing a new trail, you sometimes discover it's really a well beaten path." This may not be the exact quote, but close to it. But I still believe that humanity possesses gifts of prophecy and intuitiveness about ourselves and the world, which is reflected in any media at humanity's disposal, including music. Music has awakened many.
@shinylite54 My favorite bumper sticker of all time came from those embryonic years of change: "What If They Had A War And Nobody Came." We really haven't left yet, but it's getting close. In those days most of us knew what we didn't want to repeat, but the movement was sabotaged before a clear vision of what the meaningful replacement would be. Turn away from the present world and cultivate your inner dream, then manifest it on the shores where the south wind blows. Prophetic indeed.
My Great Grandfather came to Ellis Island on such a ship at the age of 10, and his parents were turned away because his mother was ill - "America is a good place to be, son, and you will do well here", his father said. So he made his way working in the coal mines, became a Golden Gloves bare fisted boxer, silent film stunt man, etc... He lived to 88, and was quite a man of living history.
Seeing the comments on this song and similar ones from the sixties, I have concluded that the music either creates strong intellectuals or opinionated bastards. I'm still not sure which. :P
Whichever is the case, I'd really just be happier if I could just listen to my music without being bombarded with people arguing.
we do, as people, need to unite as the human race.
however liberal progressive socialism is NOT the path to take, remember those empty grocery store shelves we would see pictures of in the old, USSR(united soviet SOCIALIST republic), that is what socialism leads to, remove the incentive to produce, and people will no longer produce.
@Chrmngblly typical, libbie diverse and open minded as long as it is on your terms. you socialists are to weak and lazy to take care of your own business, that is why you NEED me to pick up the slack for you, you do not have the courage to be self sufficient, you uneducated, uninformed, ignorant, libtroll.
@oscarmacaroni There are numerous forms of socialism, just as there are numerous forms of capitalism, all governments are mixtures of the two only varying by degrees, so stop the slippery slop crap. The USSR was a socialist as the Democratic Republic of the Congo is democratic, in name alone, ruled by a self-interested party elite. I want more competition, not inefficient monopoly or oligopoly, as this unregulated economy is leading us. The worker is being screwed, more and more every year.

This is a wonderful song - but the obvious point is not related at all to Woodstock or the sixties even - it is about leaving behind the decay of modern culture and finding community with all people. "I can see by your coat my friend that your from the other side ...there's just one thing I got to know , can you tell me please who won" So I wish you guys would quit harping about Woodstock (where Hendrix played to a field of garbage after everyone had left) and try and apply this to your life
Never forget the men and women who paid the ultimate price in Vietnam who were sent to fight with one hand tied behind their backs. Fuck politicians and political correctness!
Thanks for this original version I don't really like some live performances. I want to learn this to perform it in my sets. Now I have the correct version thanks again. "Retro Ron" on you tube check me out when you get a chance. Also Dead dragon tale.com all one word though.

@shinylite54 If you look it up on wikipedia it was written during the cold war and was about the concern of an apocolyptic post nuclear war.

It was a movement to promote peace, and love. How bad do you want it? Take up your cause, walk the walk. That was woodstock.
