Actually they did the shoulder pads BEFORE the WWF days. They were black with chrome spikes. I have some photos of that time frame and they are bad to the bone. Vince though - as with all wrestlers no matter who they are - had to change the colors of the shoulder pads to make it HIS idea so you got the red pads with black spikes which didn't look nearly as good.
That's funny, you might want to consider all the pain killers and cocain and liquor these wrestlers consume, when picking a reason why some wrestlers die young.

Hawk and Animal were brutally awesome. Two rugged musclebound beasts who really did like to beat the sh*t outta people. You gotta fear and respect massively muscular brutes who wear warpaint on their faces and tell the world they're always ready and willing to beat anybody up. Hawk liked to intimidate and dominate in all his promos...he was the most aggressive muscle bully ever. Hawk was the most badass brawler I've ever seen...always exciting to watch him overpower, pound, and pummel opponents.

If he had been able to put in a lengthy match's worth of work as a solo wrestler (probably both guys suffered from the fact that they blew up quickly--hence it made sense for them to focus on tags) he could have been a main eventer / world title contender.
