You left out 3 excellent old schools all in Terre Haute that all closed in 1971. Wiley(1863-1971), Gerstmeyer (1922-1971) and Garfield (1912-1971), all three had great high school basketball histories.
No other state, not KY and not NC, can claim the history and lore of high school basketball like Indiana. Maybe it was because there was nothing else to do, but damn the gyms and schools were great. Sad to see the era pass and the greatness of the state pass. Now history means nothing and schools like Carmel, and North Central's masses and money run past the glories of Jeffersonville, Lafayette Jeff, Anderson, and New Castle. History was made in those schools and communities with character.
Pine Village - home of the Pine Knots! West Lebanon still has a gym for use but the school is long gone. Greene twp. Green Aces home is about to fall in. Sits in the middle of a cornfield. Williamsport build a brand new gym for their "Bombers" in 1973. In 1975 they consolidated with Seeger. But the Seeger Patriots play all their home games at Williamsport's gym. Got see the home of the Mecca Arabs! In Parke County. Has 3 columns running down the sideline on each side! Thats it!
I played in the Connorsville Bowl back in 1978,,,,and didn't return to Connorsville until until 2007 and I looking for the bowl only to find that I was right across the street in one of offices doing an audit,,,,,,
I never realized that the bowl was part of a junior high
Brownsburg High School's Varsity Gym, from approx 1954-2000. Brownsburg's College Avenue Gym (famous fight scene from "Hoosiers") is gone now, but should also be included.
So many amazing gyms in Indiana. The class tournament has ruined it for me though. I am a kokomo Alum. Class of 93 and the gym isnt even sold out anymore. They dont even roll out the bleachers on the east side anymore. sad for an 8,000 seat gym. The Kats are looking good though in 2011. Lets go. Possible 4a champs!!!!!!!
If you get a chance, check out the old Decatur High School gym in Decatur the city. The high school is now used as a City and County building, but the most of the gym is still untouched with the exception of one sides seats having been removed for use for other purposes.
I know alot of high schools look like Eminence High at 5:13, But I really thought I was looking at my school in Missouri. Im only 28 and not from a small town, but a huge basketball fan and love the movie Hoosiers. I've been to small town missouri ball games before and it makes you think back. I know its not Indiana basketball, but to fans who love the game such as myself, you can imagine the history behind something old. Great videos GasCityGuy.
i was a starter at lafayette jefferson for 3 years from 00 to 03 we sold out alot of games there is no better feeling than 7 thousand plus fans screaming for you what other state will u get that at for a high school game none but indiana come on man get crawley center on here go jeff
You may not beware of it, but the sorry shits at the Anderson school board voted to close the WigWam effective at the end of this school year. Words cannot express how I feel!!!!
I did not see Lafayette Jeff High School on either video. Marion Crawley was their legendary coach. Lafayette was always a state power playing in the North Central Conference. Games were always sold out 5000 plus!
i am just starting in milan high school and at first i thought we werent going to be on there but then at last we were put as the most famous team....thank you....for atleast showing the milan high school....home of the great milan indians...it means alot being that we are a really little town
Thanks for posting these videos. They're a real treat to see where Hoosier Hysteria took place every Friday night until this past decade, to see what it was all about.
Unfortunately nothing I could ever put together about old Wisconsin gyms could ever top this. There are a couple of good ones but High School gyms in my state were mostly built for multi-purpose use. Indiana gyms were built exclusively for basketball and as fan they must be a joy to watch a game from.
Nachand Fieldhouse home of the Jeffersonville Red Devils! held around 7,000 back in the day, my grandma said it was packed with cheering fans every weekend when she went to Jeff
Ha! I went to the Huntingburg Gym and took gym class there when I was in Middle school during the 80's. It was a most magnificent structure---it could seat the whole town of 5,000 people at once, because pretty much the whole town came for the basketball games. Thanks for the memory. I was very sad when they finally tore it down, there won't be another like it ever again.
mt.arys school is on 3:02 o and i go to morcco's school it is a elemtry school now i am 10 it is so.. cool to now our school has a hitsory to morcco school is on :49 it looks the same still but we are adding on to it !! :) i am proud :)

Very good job Gas City Guy. I really enjoyed it. Wish I had the time to compile the same sort of thing for old Kansas gyms. There is a book by Brian Stucky about old Kansas gyms.
I'm from Marion. I grew up playing YMCA basketball at the Coliseum in the 70s. I'm so happy that it was saved.
