@lucyxyz We certainly do...!! Love it...I'm glad you got to see this. i know, it's hit or miss in the wind, when it comes to music...but, this was certainly, quite a moment, in the big midst of it all....
Exactly, ivor! Boarding the gravy train means you have the leverage to sing what you enjoyed when you were a Bowery bum. Not many traditional REM fans would know Webb or Campbell, and this could turn them on to something new. "Yesterday" by The Beatles has been covered thousands of times. Doesn't it stand to reason that the pure pleasure of playing the song has figured into a lot of those versions?
I never cover a song for those reasons. I do it because it's a great song, worth playing & hearing. Or I'm sure the audience will enjoy it. Or I can express something of myself through it. Or it's great but obscure; now the audience can discover it.
Bonnie Raitt and others covered songs by old blues artists, allowing them to earn royalties and be "discovered". That is pretty great. Bonnie had no shortage of ideas - but her heart was bigger than her ego. As David Crosby said, "Music is Love".
Mr. Stipe and the boys would be better served breaking out their 70's song "Sorry" and dedicated it to Mr. Campbell and Webb. You cover a song for two real reasons. 1) You have no inspiration to write and record your own music or 2) You do it out of respect and admiration for the writer or the artist. For a group that worked hard for over 35 years to put out music that is uniquely their own it is unthinkable to fathom they lack artistic challenge to continue to do that.
Who care who wrote and sang the song originally. I have heard Glenn Campbell's version. I like the REM version better. Same thing with Witchita Lineman, also sung by Glenn Campbell and written by Jim Webb. Overall, both songs sound way better by REM. I love all REM songs and their covers.
R.E.M. is one of the only bands, that when they put an album out, you can really look forward to buying it! Mike and Michael together, GREAT! The whole band is a group of friends or should I say: brothers. So bad, Berry isn't with them any more, but great that Berry is still the best of friends with them. Can't wait for their next record!
this isn't their song and sometimes a band as prolific as REM would need to look at their own songbooks. After all a band that has been writing material for 20 or so years may need to refresh their memory as to how it goes. You would hate to go see a band live only to find they hadn't rehearsed thoroughly
i used to have this very same recording version on an old, uh-um, bootleg cassette tape. but it got lost in the whole music to cd to digital shuffle. and now i have found it here. i just love this - love everything about this stripped down version . thank u you tube gods
stipe did this a capella in houston when i saw rem a few years ago... it was, of course, the only show on the tour where he sang this. kind of a surprise actually!
REM sings Glen Campbell songs. Have I entered into a strange parallel universe devoid of meaning and logic???

Why are people quoting the "i am so afraid of dying" lyric without the follow up line?
You need the next line!!

Give REM props for (barely) covering this great Jimmy Webb tune. The original but Glen Campbell is better but it's a good effort.

Absolutely. Bands as established as R.E.M. have *hundreds* of songs.

It would be kinda of funny, if it wasn't written 30 years ago by Jimmy Webb
