  • Both my schematics for 73 and later bug and 74 and later super show only 2 wires to the solenoid. I think my 75 has the third wire as well......and looking at the fuel injection schematic, it shows a wire from 'start' terminal to ECU #4 / fuel pump relay 86 / cold start valve / thermo time switch. I have written that it is a red/black wire. Hope this helps.

  • I have a 78 fuel injected beetle. On the solenoid I have 2 wires one from the battery one from the ignition. John muir's book says there is suppose to be a third small wire that is missing from mine. Where is this wire suppose to come from and where does it get hooked up to on the solenoid?

  • I just found a 73 VW Beetle with an all stock 1600 engine in it, I plan to drop the engine and buy all the necessary stock rebuild parts, BUT....I live high up at 7,000 ft. above sea level in Colorado in the mountains and thinking maybe I'd be better off to get all the necessary parts and go fuel injection,Carb'd engines run awful up here, would a Bosch L-Jetronic fuel injection system be better to go with like VW started putting on their engines on the 75+ models? I want the best MPG I can get

  • @undergroundbasement Then Id stick with carb- Fuel injection fires all 4 injectors once a revolution......if I understand the operation correctly. Can't be that good on fuel.

  • ...They do have filters- In the bottom of the oil pan.

  • 95000 miles on an engine without an oilfilter is pretty sweet.

  • Good video. My pet dog used to have the VW Beetle, he would run after and attack them!!! Didn't do it to any other car. He wouldn't even go inside one. Very odd. I love the beetle car and a friend had a restored cream coloured one. Each time he went out people used to leave notes on it offering to buy it!

  • rock on dude....make sure to get some footage!

  • ya I will soon as I get started.....

  • sweet dude....i'm definately an air cooled fan!

  • @1968hambone Ya... i'd actually prefer a pre '66 van, but the '75 'vert came along cheap enough...... it's gutted now awaiting work..... I'm going to set it on a custom chassis and put a chevy 350 in it..... VW on steroids LOL

  • runs good needs a new muffler i couldnt see any smoke in the vid though

  • what is that thing a startable engine

  • @colton416 LOL I missed picking on this comment the first time around..... A startable engine ? NOPE ! I'm making the smoke and sounds with my mouth.... J/K Yes it starts and runs........

  • Hey, isnt it smokes like a chimney and drinks like a fish?? :P

  • lmfao "smokes like a fish"

  • Fuel injection? They had that in the Bettle?

  • Yes- 1975 it was introduced on the bug...... I think earlier on the wagon (squareback???)

  • @farmall1938 i believe they actually introduced it in the beetle in 71. but that system is extremely rare, they updated the injection system in 75'

  • @racindeere65 I never heard of it pre-1975. Perhaps introduced late in '74 but I'm pretty sure in the USA it was '75. I know the wagons (squarebacks) and perhaps the sedans (notchbacks) had it earlier maybe '71 or '72, but I don't know alot about those models. Everything I've ever seen or read about says carbs before '75

  • @Brockie777 No, they did not... And it's called a Beetle. But peple can, and have modded the engines to have fuel injection.

  • @hunterziegelmann Yes....they did.

  • Did they ever make a small diesel engine for the Super Bug? or any Bug?

  • Not sure, but I don't think so.

  • according to wiki-pedia In 1951, Volkswagen prototyped a 1.3 litre diesel engine. Volkswagen made only 2 air-cooled boxer diesel engines that were not turbocharged, and installed one engine in a Type 1 and another in a Type 2. Just for fun, the diesel Beetle was time tested on the Nürburgring and achieved 0-100 km/h (0-60 mph) in one minute.[10]

  • Did you put it back in the car?

  • No it's not going back in the car........

  • well where is the motor going what are u gonna do with it? lol

where is the cooling for the motor anyways? o.O i got a 1976 volkswagen beetle the motor was normally fuel injected but when we bought it someone had put a carb. on it instead

  • is this a superbug engine??

  • Yes- 1975 Super Beetle Convertible.

  • less exhaust pipes, more powerful sound

  • Its sounds very angry...

  • no i wouldnt

  • i own a bug with about 192,000 miles on it and its still going strong.#1 their was no smoke #2 how do i make my bug sound like that, because my dads got a 468 big block chevy with a really agressive cam with 3 in pipes ant it dosent sound that good!

  • it doesnt have mufflers

  • it sounds like a v8

  • I've never known a fish who smokes. I've heard "drinks like a fish" and "smokes like a b@tch" but that's a new one to me. :-) BTW, VWs are not my specialty (old Detroit Iron is) but if memory serves the FI heads also have smaller stock valves than the 67-74s. I'd DEFINITELY go with a carb or carbs over FI; far more options, plus when your fuel pump quits, you're looking at about $20 instead of $200+.

  • Yah I misspoke- oh well, Im over it.....

  • got a 1600cc in my -73 one, the sound is almost identical, this is sweet.

  • shit dude. nice bug motor, when do you think you'll ever put that little bad ass in a car? It needs a sweet body to go with that crazy pur. Nice stuff man.

  • Probably never..... the bug is being used for a v8 conversion project, and the engine is left over. I might use it for a sawmill power plant, but I dont know yet....

  • what do i need to do to start my engine while its out of the car?

  • Is it a FI engine, or carb ? If its carb, its easy..... Hook up fuel, the starter, and a wire to the coil, and touch a wire to the solenoid, and it will start. If its FI, you need the computer, injector resistor pack, fuel pump and relay, etc. etc.

  • Can you turbo one of those fuel injected air cooled motor?

  • ....why would you want to do that ?

  • I wish to know if there's a possibility because most of the air cooled turbo engines use the Holly or Weber carburetor CB performance has the fuel injection kit weber style for turbo but the price is hot and I wanted to know what the possibilities are plus it will be something unique..

  • ....well I suppose you could, but then it will probably wind up like the rest of the ricer junk I've seen - blown up. Forcing more air into a naturally aspirated engine is asking for trouble, unless there is extensive modifications made to the lower end, etc.

  • I am going to rebuild the motor with forged 85.5 piston and forged crank 69 CW full flow oil pump with filter 1.4 ratio rocker arms 110w cam straight cut cam gear 28mm lube a lobe lifters chromoly push rods scat racing push rod tubes I will leave the Fuel injection system and I want to put 6-7 psi of turbo boost to it.. I will try it and see if it's going to end up like the ricer junkies.. and I have an unbreakable transmission so that won't be a prob.

  • Take note though, that the fi system is far from performance..... a carb setup would probably be better for you. You can replace the heads with non-fi heads, or perhaps make adapters to fit carbs to the fi heads (if the ports are not the same as the non-fi heads, I don't know) and plug the injector passages of course !

  • Ok I will do that if it don't work.

The information that I have is that the fuel pump (MEXICAN) pushes 26-30psi or 33-37psi of fuel what I wish to know is how much does the injectors squirt therefore I can use a formula to check if i have to change the injectors to bigger ones but your right the computer box is not performance LOL.. well they say VW is though I am going to see if it's the truth..

  • From what I've read- the computer fires the injectors once every revolution, therefore operating inefficiently, though I may have misunderstood that part. Also- I think the injectors are smaller than modern ones....you'd have to do some modifications

  • Alrighty then I am going to see if Bosch injectors can fit and if I need to modify I'll do it :D thank you for your time and informations.. It gave me inspirations..

My hobby is VW nothings else..

I will let you know and mabe put a video on you tube so you can see how it stayed.. once again thank you.

  • 75 was the first year the beetle was fuel injected

they belt is loose on mine, and cant figure out how to tighten it, any help?

  • Change the spacers on the generator pulley- More between the halves will loosen, fewer between the halves will tighten.

  • what a beast! :D I've got a 1500cc in my '66

  • can't beat the sound of an aircooled volkswagen engine!

  • my friend has a super bettel a 73 model for those old little engines those things are fast

  • it sounds like theres aplug out.

  • No, it sounds like a VW engine. There is no plug out.

  • thats a big lawnmower

  • Huh ??????????

  • fuel injected? i thought they had carburettors

  • ....I think I know the difference !!! Beetles were fuel injected in 1975. I think the squareback wagon was fuel injected also, but earlier......maybe early 70's ? Not so familiar with that particular model.

  • only us cars had injection,my dad owns a 1978 convertable wich originally had a fuelinjection but its not as good as the carburettors

  • hard to put a good engine down!!! Vw's are great

  • great sound!!

    the best sound of ever!!

    VW Boxer!!

  • sounds really good

  • i have a 75 but i converted to dual carbs,

    nice sound.

  • Is it running rich in this clip? I have a 75 myself that I'm trying to fix up and believe me, I have been on the recieving end of some prety nasty problems, mostly transmission, but some engine as well.

  • Not rich really, but she burns some oil......needs an overhaul if I ever use it for something... I wish it was carb..

  • If you ever plan on parting out the engine, let me know, it is hard to find FI parts unless you want to go through Mexico.

  • Try Rocky Mountain Motor Works, or California Pacific J-Bugs.... I havent looked for FI parts, but they both have TONS of VW stuff...

  • I have looked on both sites, they have some, but not much. What I want to do eventually is rebuild my engine. quality German auto parts stocks rebuilt FI heads though.

  • Fuelie parts are easy to find in the US. Call MidAmerica Motorworks in Illinois. They have everything for your fuelie.

  • I switched my '78 over to a Solex 34-Pict with an 009 dist. Way more power than the stock fuelie. Since you mentioned about the carb thing. Don't go with the Bocar 34-Pict, heavy dead spot just off idle.

  • how dose the fuel injection work on that??? is there a computer on it like a more modern car (by modern i mean early 80's when EFI came out)

  • ....you mean mid 70's, when EFI came out, right ? This is electronic fuel injected, by Bosch. One difference I know of, is that all 4 injectors fire at the same time, every revolution, as far as I understand...... Inefficient, I think.....

  • By the way- You can see the ECU, and injector bias resistor pack in the video. The ECU is the aluminum box mounted to the board that I have the switches mounted on, and the resistor block is the smaller box mounted above the ECU.
