It's bizarre to think that that tiny, tiny little creature would be a man well into his 30s now. Wonderfully simple but strange and thought-provoking scene.
Ever notice how people who trot out the old cliche of "pseudo intellectualism" never offer a positive example of "real" intellectualism? I think it's because they simply don't believe in the intellect... not when it really gets down to it. They are hostile to anything serious in the culture. They want the world to resemble a Britney Spears video, and are pissed when our art refuses to meet their vulgar goals.
@numberonealcove in my opinion,"pseudo intellectualism" is when people are convinced that they have reflextions on their own but they repeat like parrots what "real intellectuals" say."pseudo intellectual" is someone who tries to convince us (the mortals) that he/she is an intellectual because of his/her readings, fave movies or kind of music.a real intellectual is someone who knows that he/she doesn't know anything and is continuelly looking for answers for all his/her questions.I hate pseudos
The film operates at many levels; man, a creature not meant to live alone, or in a society. it's, I belive, an unharmonous evolution which leaves a hole in the man's psyche. A hole which we desparately try to fill with love or violence. Bruno is a quintessitial romantic in it's purest form; his window to the world is not through learning, but abslutley visceral. But a bit of him is in all of us , which we painfully try ot cage.
People are pretentioius in presense of people they know; this comment was my 2 cents; "pretentioius" is the word you reserve for someone you know, not for someone's reflection. You can call it however, worng, inaccurate, exaturation, irrelevant, etc.. and explain your reasons for it. Hertzog is intentioally ambigious in many of his film; if you don't see the scene the way I do, then we just disagree; and let's not call each other names.
Pseudo-intellectual? not even close, buddy; this is not psuedo anything; you don't reacd much, do you? This is high school stuff; clumsily worded? I gotta ask some English teacher about that; I don't know what your writing skill level is; and to impress whom? people I don't know, and they don't know me? people try to impress others when they get recognition; How does that work, when nobody knows you, and you don't them?
The great thing about Herzog is that he always touches you, for example when the doctor makes the baby lift himself up. You know thats real and he does that in almost every movie he have ever made. It feels almost like a documentry! Take Fitzgeraldo for example. Only to know what they actually did in that movie is so stunning that its worth seeing only because of that!
One of the greatest scenes ever filmed.

@lablashi uh no people are just pretentious
pitchfork-level pretentious, and me calling you pretentious has nothing to do with our separate interpretations of what's going on in the film
c0al 1 year ago
then how do you deduct pretentiousness out of my observation?
lablashi 1 year ago
@lablashi because i find it pseudo-intellectual, clumsily worded, and struggling to impress with "depth" and an attempt at using big words

@c0al In any case, the best part about Stroszek is Bruno S. and his wonderful personality.

it looks like a canvas - the old doctor next to the little baby. Very touching and uncompromising scene. You're irresistible to it.

Agreed. The baby's crying sounds non-human after a while, it's... very disturbing.
