One prime example is Ted Bundy, he raped and murdered many woman, yet after he got caught and was placed in prison he had a change of heart and "got saved." Many predominant Evangelicals believe he was genuine. The argument "there must be a God to ensure justice" is absurd coming from someone who believes all deserve eternal Hell, but God's mercy exempts some.

Also, as far as I understand the Christian doctrine, 'repentance' means complete transformation as a human being and genuine acceptance of God's law. This idea of transformation is not unknown to secular societies either (prisons as places for rehabilitation, not punishment). If someone commits a crime and then genuinely repents, is he still guilty? The problem is, how do we know he's now a different person?

This man is brilliant. Not only does he have a logical answer to every question thrown at him but he can back in up completely. To be fair, a rapist can go to Heaven only if he truly repents of his sins, which will be a very painful experience. It's not enough that he says, "Hey God, ahem, I believe in you now...". In this case Matt's argument isn't really spot on. Of course, he didn't even need to insist on that point to demonstrate the weakness of the caller's reasoning.

@bordereye Isn't the issue of "true repentance" a red herring? Matt's question was simply what if one "got saved?" One prime example is Ted Bundy, he raped and murdered many woman, yet after he got caught and was placed in prison he had a change of heart and "got saved." Many predominant Evangelicals believe he was genuine. The argument "there must be a God to ensure justice" is absurd coming from someone who believes all deserve eternal Hell, but God's mercy exempts some.

Also, as far as I understand the Christian doctrine, 'repentance' means complete transformation as a human being and genuine acceptance of God's law. This idea of transformation is not unknown to secular societies either (prisons as places for rehabilitation, not punishment). If someone commits a crime and then genuinely repents, is he still guilty? The problem is, how do we know he's now a different person?

This man is brilliant. Not only does he have a logical answer to every question thrown at him but he can back in up completely. It's a shame though that ignorant people call in, waste time, interrupt, bible bash and hang up. Makes me sad to think that religion holds more of a ground in peoples lives than critical thinking when it can never be backed up. Every day more evidence that god doesn't exist piles on and I'm lucky to have given religion up.

God did create hell, but he created it for the devil and his angels. God did create that criteria, but then things changed when Jesus came to die for our sins.
