  • Lucia Popp is just so amazing :) Definitely deserves the wonderful applause at the end! I am going to start learning this once my new book comes..I can't wait!

  • How could anyone not be grateful for the privilege of seeing this video. I am so thankful that it is preserved for us. The best of humankind!

  • A voice touched by God. Clarity and tone to die for!

It floats into your head without preamble; suddenly it's there.

    Pure magic.

  • Superb. As good as it gets.TY MUEZZAB for posting

  • i am so excited to be sining this song in a couple of weeks :)

  • amazing

  • Perfection!!!

  • I believe this woman is the greatest soubrette in history

  • Not your ideal Susanna? This woman was BORN to sing Mozart, and it's a shame that most American houses are casting bigger voices to sing this part.

  • My favorite Susanna ever. <333

  • Is she the role of 'Countess' in this?

  • @opalibra no this is Susanna, but the Countess and Susanna do switch places in this.

  • I'm learning this song for my next recital. It is so beautiful and has been so much fun to sing.

  • Compare to another similar aria writen by JOSEPH MARTIN KRAUS (1756-1792):

    Concert aria - " Innocente donzelletta "

  • This is the first time I heard this song. I was actually looking for the opera singer who sang this song in the movie "Becoming Jane" her name is Lynda Lee, from Ireland but came across Lucia Popp. What happened to her? I see those below mentioning "had" and "we didn't deserve her".

  • @WeeeWriter She died of brain cancer in 1994, I believe

  • she makes is sound so easy! shes amazing

  • This is the first Aria i ever learned. It always holds such a special place in my heart! and to hear it sung so lovely is wonderful

  • Oooh! what stupid, stupid people who disliked THIS VIDEO!! ..shame on them all!!!

  • Maravilloso, gracias Muezzab

  • The best rendition I have ever heard. And I heard a lot!

    Thank you for posting.

  • qué bonito legato !

  • sublime .... perfection!

  • so beautiful!

  • amazing! But my favorite role for her is still Pamina

  • Is this performance available on dvd?

  • She is so incredible. In this aria her voice is so tender and loveley. But when she sings Der Hölle Rache she is so powerfull and strong.

  • where is she, what a loss.

  • *sigh* Gorgeous

  • Comment removed

  • Then stay away from come scoglio lol

  • Worse than the low notes are those insane jumps.

  • This is one of the most beautiful interpretations of this role. The Georg Solti recording with the London Philharmonic featuring Popp, Te Kanawa, Allen, Von Stade and Ramey is one of the greatest operatic achievements ever to be recorded. Lucia Popp is the quintessential Susanna! Brava!

  • Oh wonderful Lucia...

  • bravo

  • She is one of the best Mozartean sopranos even.Of course she is not only good at Mozartean roles, but still.

  • HELL YEAH! that was the best deh vieni i've ever heard! LOVED IT!

  • Ma Susanna pour l'éternité. Que dire de plus ?

Si !

  • no its confusing at this tempo...

  • yes-she is wonderful with this :-) a joy to listen to

  • Stunning!

  • It's beautiful singing too bad her face is in the dark in parts of the video!

  • @dynamicstuff73 Stahlberg did this on purpose. Like Solti's pacing, and the minimalist staging, we are invited into a whole new level of intimacy with the music. The opera is actually taking place inside us. In fact the stage is nearly empty and the singers tiny. We are being given OUR experience, we are not "going" to see something. That way Nozze is a seed planted inside us and it remains forever.

  • OMG...i LOVE iT...GAVE ME CHiLLS

  • Surely makes you believe in angels- her voice will never truly be silenced....

  • very....slow. but, it's an interpretation. and, i liked it. though, with a less capable singer, it would have been a disaster. could you imagine netrebko at this tempo? dear lord.....

  • If Netrebko will sing in this tempo, her awful piercing sharpness will elongate.

  • ouch!!! but spot on

  • There are actually some things I like about Netrebko as Susanna...

Have you heard the 2006 version of Venite, inginocchiatevi with Harnoncourt? Also much slower than you'd expect, and Netrebko handled it pretty well, and produced some beautiful colors.

I definitely like the purity of Lucia Popp's voice more as Susanna, but I think Netrebko acquits herself fine.

Also, I think we have a tendency to play Mozart too fast. This tempo really makes the pizzicatti shine. Beautiful.

  • THE TRULY BEST SUSANNA AND PAMINA!

  • I've never heard this sing more beautifully. Probably no one is going to top her ever, either.

  • There's also Kathleen Battle's rendition of this aria and sincerely, it's quite difficult to decide which is the more beautiful. Check it here in youtube.

Let me know what do you think.

  • @sweetvlc Since you ask: both are admirable, vocally, musically, tecnically. Now, I am defintely more deeply moved by Battle. Why? More sensual perhaps? Misteries of art. Best regards!

  • Lucia Popp was a master at Mozart. Her voice was so clean. To sing straight is a true talent.

  • La plus inoubliable avec Seefried !

  • Cannot Imagine what it would have been like to hear this live. Touches the very soul, heavenly.

  • wow, i've never heard such explosive applause after such a placid aria!

  • Just lovely. A perfect voice for Mozart. Taken a little slowly by Solti but I can't blame him. You want to linger and luxuriate in that singing. I'd love to find a copy of this production somewhere. Seems difficult to locate. In any case, the lighting designer should be shot.

  • Oh, your comment made me laugh! I agree with you! Shoot the bastardo! ;-))

  • Well done Mooseman, specially your proposal concerning the lighting designer !!

  • Thanks for posting!

  • Sheer talent and genius. Thank you so much for this video.

  • The lovely Lucia Popp...beautiful interpretation. Thank you.

  • The most beautiful Sussannah ever.

  • She had such a uniquely sweet character to her voice.

  • Does anyone know where to get this video, either on VHS or DVD? I can't find it anywhere

  • Strange, she and Arleen died almost at the same age, Lucia form brain cancer and Arleen from a big tumor in the brain.

And they had the same beautiful qualities, grace, class, purity...

  • Stunning.

  • Gorgeous, no liberties taken, just perfect. :)

  • There have been more sensual readings of "Deh vieni" (Moffo, anyone?), and others that are tragically emotional (Hagley in the Haitink video, who cries real tears while singing), but I don't think any has ever been this brightly sung, beautifully shaded, and heartfelt. She is a true gem.

  • WOW

  • My ideal Susanna, my lovely Lucia Popp sings the marvelous "Deh vieni non tardar", from a wonderful Mozart's "Le Nozze di Figaro" - A critic after my own heart;) Thanks!!

  • The most lovely and loveable of singers. Incomparable.

  • This performance was obviously recorded. Does anyone know where it can be purchased?

  • The DVD is being released soon if not already. Check Amazon with familiar tags like Solti, Figaro, Paris Opera.

  • The soprano singer from whom I come to like it first time is Lucia Popp. The Susannah post of performance in Tokyo 1980 is not forgotten still.

  • She is the successor of Zinka Milanov as "la donna immobile".

  • The soprano singer whom I come to like it first time is Lucia Popp. The Susannah post of the performance in Tokyo 1980 is not forgotten still.

  • The soprano singer whom I come to like it first is Lucia Popp. The Susanna post of "The Marriage of Figaro" in the performance in Tokyo 1980 is not forgotten still.

"Queen of the Night's aria" is also wonderful. However, it is the fourth symphony fourth movement of the Gustav Mahler composition after all. It is a performance that two great conductor of Mahler named Klaus Tennstedt and Gary Bertini took the baton. The singing voice with that glossy and putting is an eternal treasure for me.

  • Fun fact: Popp's understudy in this production was Renee Fleming.

  • I will always treasure the Decca recording of this opera. Lucia Popp was the greatest Sussanah of all time. She sings this aria so beautifully and with great feeling.

  • Beautiful!!

  • Absolutely gorgeous. i don't get why many contemporary conductors feel an inexplicable need to rush through Mozart as fast as humanly possible. This is perfection. I had forgotten how much I loved Lucia Popp. Thanks for the reminder.

  • I miss lucia popp ... she's an inspiration! that breath control is out of this world.

  • This is so so so lovely! It's just about the perfect speed. Otherwise it's nearly impossible to get all of the vowels in. ;)

  • My only complaint about her is to die so young! She was absolutely amazing!

  • I never got the fuss over Popp - this made me a fan! Thanks!

  • I have never really appreciated Popp before, but she is seriously the only person who could make me like this aria. Most especially the second half. With most other singers, I would be bored to death. The applause at the end of this is justice.

  • This is most likely my favorite recording of this piece. Just beautiful and the control is amazing!

  • I'm with you that she's an ideal Susanna. What a crystal-clear voice!

  • this is amazing singing. I think this is one of the most beautiful soprano arias ever; it's apparent simplicity is it's beauty and this is sung amazingly...this is a voice to hear in heaven

  • extraordinary soprano lucia popp, long live mozart

  • why do most conductors make it SO slow? it's almost painful

  • As I hear her I curse on the time which I was born! It's such a pity that I couldn't hear such voice on stage alive !

  • You read my mind.

  • There's no such thing as perfection in music, but this comes pretty darn close.

  • If Lucia Popp sang on Earth, what could there possibly be in heaven? Hearing her makes my spine shiver. (Yes, I know the phrase is "shivers up/down your spine", but that's not it here. She literally makes my spine quiver.)

We did not deserve her. Lord.

  • i agree - her singing is absolutely beautiful!

but look at he expression after 'sul arra' in this same production, she thinks the same of Gundula's singing ...

  • Gorgeous!

  • plush and bright--beautiful!

  • So unforgettable !!!. Thank you !!!...I have just uploaded a version by a Patagonian soprano, Cheers, ~Sergio.

  • A wonderful artist who died too young

  • Does anyone have the lyrics? I can't find them anywhere on the internet! I'd be very grateful x

  • Arietta:

In braccio all'idol mio: timide cure,

    Uscite dal mio petto,

A turbar non venite il mio diletto.

Oh come par che all'amoroso foco

    L'amenità del loco,

La terra e il ciel risponda!'

Come la notte i furti imieci seconda!

  • Lorenzo da Ponte wrote such delightful lyrics

  • Deh vieni, non tardar, o gioia bella,

Vieni ove amore per goder t'appella,

Finché noti splende in ciel notturna face

Finché l'aria è ancor bruna e il mondo tace.

Qui moririora il ruscel, qui scherza l'aura,

Che coli dolce susurro il cor ristaura.

    Qui ridono i fioretti e l'erba è fresca;

Ai piaceri d'amor qui tutto adesca.

Vieni, ben mio. tra queste piante ascose

Ti vo'la fronte incoronar di rose

  • Here's a translation: (1) 'At last comes the moment when, without reserve, I can rejoice in my lover's arms: timid scruples, hence from my heart, and do not come to trouble my delight. Oh! how the spirit of this place, the earth and the sky, seem to echo the fire of love! How the night furthers my stealth!
  • Goddamn, still gave me the chills. None like Ms. Popp - godspeed Ms. Popp, we miss you.

  • Simply the best Susanna ever!! Breathtakingly gorgeous voice, such beautiful legato and phrasing, a Mozartian like very few. We miss you Lucia!!!!!!

  • How wonderful, spiritual and full of grace is Lucia Popp !!! To be in love with her is something natural for some people who love superior things. But my favourite Susanna is another human marvel: Victoria de los Angeles. Kisses for both of you, beautiful women, wherever your marvelous spirits may be... AND THANKS

  • Are you sure Vicky sang Susanna? I believe the Countess was always her role in this opera.

  • Yeah, if Victoria de los Angeles sang Susanna I want to know!

  • no one sings this aria better

  • She is an angel!

She played Contessa in Tokyo just a year before her death. It was such a great performance, too.

    We miss you, Lucia!

  • I'm in love with her.

  • Merci, merci!!La plus belle susanna pour toujours!!!Quelle simplicité, quelle beauté, quelle élégance!!

  • My first opera performance in Palais Garnier was this Nozze di Figaro the 28 of june 1980.

She was my Suzanna. She is for ever.

  • So unforgettable Angel...~ Sergio.

  • What a beautiful voice. Great performance!

  • Merveilleuse Lucia vous êtes éternelle.

  • WOW. She is really one of the best sopranos!!! Bravo, que expresividad vocal tan buena!!!

  • She is just the best.

  • Pure perfection!

  • FANTASTICA! la única! ella es la perfección!

  • She is an angel.

  • ¡Pero qué mujer más fantástica!

  • Lucia Popp+ Mozart= * * * * *of 3

  • I think Popp had the perfect voice for this--such a poised and subtle voice.

  • This is wonderful! Thank you so much for posting it. I wish I could give it ten stars!
