I bought the vinyl when it first came out 1972 or 1973. I did find a downloaded version of it over a year ago - but I think it's been taken down.
This is such a simple way to explain reincarnation and karmic lessons. And yes, Harris' voice is so beautiful he was a beauitiful man. His "There are no Saviours on My Cross" is very powerful and profound.I was fortunate to meet him in 1972 - such a warm person. He is so missed.
@LadyMoondancer Indeed LMD. His voice was was enchanting, exceptionally powerful and leaving you wanting to hear more. I particularly liked his portrayal as Dumbledore in Harry Potter, and many other films. Apparently he died of Hodgkin's Lymphoma on 25 October 2002 (aged 72) London, England, UK. I will check out There are No Saviours on my Cross. You were very lucky to have met the man himself. Very much missed. Thank you for your contribution.
I didn't see him in Harry Potter. I don't know, I just can't get into Harry Potter. My favorite is him as King Arthur in Camelot. I got to see him twice in that role in 1982 and 1986 when the tour came to Buffalo. I have the DVD of the 1967 movie and the DVD of a filming of the 1982 production that was aired on HBO. About a year ago, I was scouring youtube and the internet for Richard Harris vids/mp3s to replace the cassette recordings I did of his albums.
@LadyMoondancer I rather like anything (most things if they are good against evil) to do with Wizardry and Magic, maybe because of the dreams I had when I young that I could fly. Maybe that's why I enjoy "Merlin" currently running as a TV series in UK and Potter as he has extraordinary powers. I will try to send you the link in a msg to Richard Harris as Dumbledor.
This was one of my first vinyl purchases and I believe I still have it in my collection. The sound quality on mine was way worse than this one with the speakers sounding like they were distorting with the louder sounds but it was the recording itself which is distorted. Sound problems notwithstanding, I listened to this again and again and found Bach's story and Harris' reading of it to be tremendously inspirational to me in a very lasting way.
@tsettimo Me too, I bought and read the 1st edition of the book, and it's falling apart all sellotaped up, would never buy another copy. I have the cd I made next to my bed and another copy in the lounge, the 1st time ever tried to make a video in this way,not much good with the pics but while I was converting this it began to drive me away, as I had SO much trouble with the 7 day free trial I manged to get. They offered me another week, but I declined. A brain can only take so much. :)
my stepdad had the album and i would listen to it as i went to sleep as a child great to hear it again ive heard it was made into a film but have never seen it not sure i even want to as in my minds eye i have seen it and would it spoil my version of it
@ThePmark1 I met a fella on here who told me something about making into a play or film, but it was never actually made. Can't find the email he sent privately to verify, but I would say it is better to use your own imagination with this, as I used to dream I could fly when i was a child. Since adulthood that freedom has been denied me. Keep on imagining, the horizon goes on for ever that way. :)
@ThePmark1 1 thing forgot to mention is I searched so extensively for Richard Harris' s version on here and on the net, only found yukky Neil Diamond's versions, loads of em,which weren't original music nor the story. Hated them, that's why I decided to through the 3 days of agony with a free 7 day trial(It was unstable) to convert from cassette tape from original vinyl owned by a friend when I was very young, and found it after searching the entire house, found it , the last one I looked at.
@HopeWithPandora Thanks, but as far as I am aware, and I have searched extensively, there is no clearer version. The guy who has a brill version will not upload. ?
I absolutely LOVE this version. Listened to it over and over again when I was in college. Have tried finding a CD version of it without success. So relaxing yet such a powerful message. THANK YOU for sharing this!!!
@garlynni Yes I have listened to this quite frequently. Richard had the most fantastic voice and a brilliant actor too. Loved him as Dumbledore in Harry Potter's films. A real shame that he died before the rest of the films were made.
You are most welcome, thank you for your comments. :)
@garlynni I ditto your comments -- except for me, it was during elementary school, not college. It made an impression on me that I had not yet felt before. Thanks to this posting, I can now share this with my children.
I absolutely LOVE this!!! I used to go to sleep listening to this wonderful aspiring story when I was a kid. This is a story for everyone to hear!!! Thank you for posting the original version!!! I dont know anyone else who knows this beautiful story.
@tarajmnz Thank you for your comments. I have read the book first by Richard Bach. The story as told by Richard, is almost exactly the same apart from a few words, and sometimes i read while listening to it. I was so taken with this story, that I created some clay sculptures of Jonathan, and still have one of them. :)
I have been looking for this for a long time. I found a place several years ago that transfered it from vinyl to cassette but it didn't sound so good and I also lost it. I used to lie in bed and listen to this in my late teens with someone Icared about, it was his record. That was 40 yrs. ago, 2 husbands, 3 kids and 2 grandkids ago. Thank u 4 posting it. I have 1 question, how can I save it om my mp3 player or can I? Thank u again, it brings back fond memories
@MegaSunshineforever You are very welcome. I love listening to this, but I must admit it nearly drove me off it when i was editing and using the free programme to make it into a video from a cassette tape. I hunted through ALL my tapes to find this was the last one I found, then the fun began, Have a great life. I always say "hello Jonathan" to a seagull hanging around in the sky at dark.
@eccentricoldcow Well, I'm happy to thank you, Miss (Mrs?) Eccentricoldcow, and I've only just found your upload and haven't even listened to it yet - but it's just about to be my bed-time story for tonight. I didn't know this recording even existed until now. So thanks very, very much - really! :-)
@DrewWlliams Well thank you for your comment. You are very welcome and I hope you found part 2 also to finish off your sweet dreams of flying high in the sky. I love the way Richard Harris tells the story. He had a beautiful voice.Have you read the book also? It is almost exact tot he word but differs slightly.
@eccentricoldcow I have read the book, thanks for asking. I had the good fortune many years ago to rent a run-down apartment fully equipped with a top-of-the range bookshelf, and Jonathan Livingston Seagull was one of the treasures I found there. As for Mr. Harris's vioice, he - along wih Richard Burton - posessed the vocal tones my ear most likes listening to - I like his reading of Kahilil Gibran's "The Prophet", too. Part 2 of Jonathan will usher me back to Dreamland tonight. Best wishes.:-)
@DrewWlliams. Great find, and I agree on your choice of brilliant vocals. It gladdens me to know people appreciate and enjoy this. Makes the effort all the more worthwhile. Dream on and keep working on love.
Thank you very much for taking the time to post this, it is very much a personal favorite. Richard Harris reads this better than Richard Bach himself. I can't believe it has never been released on CD. You have my great appreciation ." Remember the seagull sees furthest who flies highest"
@duncsmith67 Hi Dunc an? . I think it IS released on CD in U.S.but I didn't get a response when I emailed the guy for price from UK etc. So I converted this myself as I have described above. Took me days of nail biting and swearing, smoking, and was almost sick of the thing, lol, but I could improve as the pic is not shown througout. Thanks so much for your feedback, much appreciated on quite a tiresome, expensive and fruitless day, but I am one of them Jonathans. :)
@eccentricoldcow I don't believe an official CD was issued . There's a vinyl sale where the seller includes a Cd transfer at no extra cost. I note that you wish you'd converted the vinyl to 4 parts.I did a transfer in 6 parts:1-Intro - It Was Morning; 2-Learning - The Subject Was Speed; 3-Concil Gathering - Banishment; 4-New Beginning - So This Is Heaven; 5-Chiang Teaches - Jonathan Returns; 6-Jonathan Teaches - Maynard Gull Empowered. If you're interested let me know.

Thank you for presenting this wonderful, "lost" recording! The story is truly a great literary, and philosophical, gem!
