To sum up: To get rachel back and to try and help them win nationals. He pretty much spent most of his time insulting everyone, especially Finn which created a lot of friction because Finn wanted Rachel back to. Then he was dumped by Rachel. And really, they weren't even dating again. Rachel ya know, she still kinda liked him and was glad to have him helping out but she was also keeping her distance to since she's in love with Finn.
