I read about people cleaning their loco wheels like this, but was always too scared to do it in case it damaged the motor. Seeing this vid has eased my mind somewhat. :)
@teddybeareleventeen Yeah no problem man, I just used a mini shamwow thing for my track it was made in Germany so I figured it was good. Came out smooth and sexy !
This wouldn't work with a loco (in my case, a tram) with only one truck powered, would it? Any suggestions, anyone? Please reply directly to this comment. Thanks.
@schizzie345 You could try using a narrow strip of cloth, (maybe an inch wide), across the track that allows one set of drive wheels to pick up power while the other is being cleaned. Apologies for the delay in replying.
@jmsschooner Hi, this method cleans the wheels 100%. how much 'mileage' you get between cleaning depends on how often you run your trains, how much dust gets on your layout, how hard you run them (heavy trains or not) and also what type of metal wheels you have i.e brass, nickel silver or older athearn drive wheels. the older athearn wheels dirty up much quicker than brass and n/silver. replacement drive wheels are available from athearn and North West Short Lines, google either one.
@jmsschooner to clean my track, right now i'm using a fleischmann track cleaning block by hand to polish the rails. usually 2 or 3 passes on the track will be good enough. you can feel the dirt being removed as you rub the block back and forth. Peco Walthers and Roco also make track cleaning blocks. i hope this helps. thankz for watching! =]
You can use alcohol but not something I would recomend. Get some GooGone. Awsome stuff, fairly cheap and leaves a citris scent and it won't damage any special paint or melt the plastic on the underside of the trucks.
@guilford681 Thanks for watching bud! I reckon ANY method like this has gotta be good. It's especially good if you've put a lot of detail on the engine and don't want to damage any buy putting it in a cradle.
At the club we use 91% alcohol and paper towels. You've beat me to doing a locomotive wheel cleaning vid to the fellow modelers in this hobby just gettin started. Awesome Stew.
@Grumpy7783 Thanks Coburn! I don't know what precentage alcohol I've got, I'll have to check. I love using this method, all the dirt goes on a cloth and NOT in the engine! Perfect!
OUTSTANDING "How To" I know I will using this method for sure! Thanks for posting this Mate! Another one of the Mad Scientist's vids into the favs. You Rock!

Does this work for the track as well ? IS 90% alcohol ok.
NaziJuice 4 months ago
@NaziJuice Hi NJ, this works well for the track although it can be a bit tedious if you have lots of track. 90% is fine. Thanks for watching! =)

What brand is the engine? It sounds like it might be an early Bachmann. I think they picked up power from only one axle.
teddybeareleventeen 9 months ago
i tried it on santa fe but when the front set of the wheels, there are six of them
the first two wen they go over it it cuts power to the track and i m using the same chux and same liquid

what percentage does it clean the wheels 100% being like u wont have to clean the wheels for like 120hours of running or
and what do u use to clean your track

@stillfreefilms Be careful that you don't get dirt in your engine if it's upside down when you clean the wheels.
